Jesus held on the cross with nails in his hands

DD5 is in year 1 and has been learning about Jesus at school. Great stuff in the spirit of Easter.

The RE teacher told the class how Jesus was NAILED to the cross.

This is quite graphic for a little girl who believes that the Easter bunny will leave eggs in our garden.

Should I tell school that this is too much info for little ears?

Well I was taught all of this from when I started school, but we went to church every Sunday so I heard about it there too. I’m not traumatised.

GoodnightAdeline · 20/03/2024 21:45

I was brought up Catholic and learned this at age 4. Never lost any sleep over it. She will be fine.

Floralnomad · 20/03/2024 21:45

Im an atheist but even I know that Easter was originally about Jesus not bunnies and eggs .

Mrssheepskin · 20/03/2024 21:45

Wouldn’t bother me.

OutOfTheHouse · 20/03/2024 21:47

I agree. However I work in a C of E school where it’s what we teach.

HalebiHabibti · 20/03/2024 21:47

It's the same message children have been given for over 1000 years.... how would you like the RE teacher to change it?

WittyMotherhoodRelatedPun · 20/03/2024 21:47

What sort of school is it?

If they’re having RE lessons then I think it’s probably fair enough. I mean, that’s the story of Easter. Jesus was nailed to the cross. It’s an awful detail but I don’t know what else she could have said. “Put on the cross?”

I’m an atheist FWIW.

Tourmalines · 20/03/2024 21:48

If she’s learning religion then she has to hear what’s in the bible . No cover ups .
I’m an atheist too .

It’s religion, get over it. It’s good that kids get taught about Christianity and the key facts relating to it. Easter is not all about bunnies and Easter eggs.

Confrontayshunme · 20/03/2024 21:49

It is part of the national curriculum in a nominally Christian country. It CAN be graphic, but I think it is usually more like "Christians believe that Jesus was God's son (following on from Christmas lessons) and that he was put on trial and punished with a horrible death when he didn't deserve it. Then, they believe he came back to life 3 days later." It is a pretty graphic story but I can't think of a more sanitised way of teaching it?

TeenLifeMum · 20/03/2024 21:49

When I moved in with dh we were sorting stuff and dh found my RE book from year 1. I’d drawn Jesus on the cross with blood spurting out of his hands. Apart from dh laughing hysterically and wondering if I was a bit psychotic, I’ve no lasting harm.

tangledupp · 20/03/2024 21:49

Well the teacher can't really say they stuck him up there with velcro. I went to a C of E school (but I'm not religious) and we were all told this when we were about 5, and none of us were traumatised.

TaFox · 20/03/2024 21:50

DD knew that Jesus was put on a cross. The nails aspect shocked her to be honest and that's all she was talking about all evening.

The school is not a religion affiliated school but they have RE and learn about all religions.

Easter bunnies 🤦‍♀️ Easter is not about bunnies or chocolate, op. Grow up.

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/03/2024 21:50

I'm an atheist but come on the Easter story is about the crucifixion of Christ - not magic bunnies.

😳

BMW6 · 20/03/2024 21:50

Easter isn't about bunnies and chocolate eggs OP.

NorthCliffs · 20/03/2024 21:50

My 4 year old son carefully examined a particularly gruesome crucifix on a table in a Catholic church. He said 'Where's his socks? Aren't his feet cold?' and moved on.

TeenLifeMum · 20/03/2024 21:50

😂 Velcro Jesus! Do you remember those bouncy castles with the Velcro walls from the 1990s? @tangledupp

OurfriendsintheNE · 20/03/2024 21:50

Just wait til they do the ancient Egyptians 🪝 👃🏼 🧠

Pussygaloregalapagos · 20/03/2024 21:51

I think that is how the story goes........ maybe they could add a TW or say it was sticky tape!

notyourmummy · 20/03/2024 21:51

That's what Easter is about though? And kids love all the blood, guts and gore. My SEN EYFS were most upset they don't get to crucify each other (had to make do with split pin crucifying a little figure instead!)

PrincessTeaSet · 20/03/2024 21:51

It's such a shocking story that you have to start young so that you're desensitised. Hearing it for the first time as an adult would be worse

CryHavoc · 20/03/2024 21:51

I went to a Catholic school and watched the full Robert Powell Jesus of Nazareth films every Easter from being 4. Whipping and nails and crown of thorns and all.

It's the Easter story, far more than bunnies and chicks are.

user1745 · 20/03/2024 21:52

She probably won't really fully understand how horrible it is to be nailed by your hands at her age. She will understand the words, but not just how gory it would have been, if that makes sense. The same as how we all learnt from a very young age how people were beheaded in the Tudor era, but we probably didn't fully appreciate the details of it (assuming no graphic images are being shown).
