Jesus held on the cross with nails in his hands

DD5 is in year 1 and has been learning about Jesus at school. Great stuff in the spirit of Easter.

The RE teacher told the class how Jesus was NAILED to the cross.

This is quite graphic for a little girl who believes that the Easter bunny will leave eggs in our garden.

Should I tell school that this is too much info for little ears?

I remember this at my infant school, particularly the bit where the other children turned to me and said “you’re Jewish - you killed Jesus”. First time I was really really confused and felt really bad/guilty about my religion.

It was the Romans Confused

Apparently so, but that wasn’t the lesson back then.

It was God who killed Jesus.

Absolutely hilarious.

She's also going to get taught that King Harold got shot in the eye and Henry VIII beheaded 2 of his wives.

Wait til they get to 9-11.

How's she going to cope with the actual news?!

You'd love our Catholic school. Next week and every year in Holy Week the kids will be doing "stations of the cross" which is a prayer reflecting on the experiences of Jesus as he carries the cross, is crucified dies and is buried. The prayer is based on the pictures exhibited round the school hall (permanently). These are pictures actually painted by the older kids representing the different things the bible teaches about Jesus' journey to Calvary.

To try and be useful here you can always say "but he came back and it didn't hurt him anymore!"

That’s next week’s cliff hanger revealed 😂. I honestly don’t know any children who have been traumatised by this but my children are quite used to seeing Catholic crucifixes which do have Christ on them - that’s the whole point. To remind us of Christ’s sacrifice. Plus the stations of the cross etc.

When RE is being taught, the teacher will have to explain this or it’s all a bit illogical as the suffering is a foundational belief.

I also agree that there is loads of history that is really gruesome so be prepared for that!

Alconleigh · 20/03/2024 22:24

You've never been in a church? Really?

Jesus was mildly tickled on the cross?

(In fact, he wasn’t nailed through his hands. The Romans almost certainly crucified through the wrists. Hands wouldn’t have supported the body’s weight.)

I remembered my dad explaining this to me clear as if it were yesterday so I must've been upset by it. He explained it wouldn't have hurt as much as going through bone which I found reassuring. Ds decided they used blue tack as he thought using nails was a ridiculous notion!

Not everyone wants children taught about Christ’s sacrifice when it’s not a message we believe is correct.

Cockapoopoopoo · 20/03/2024 22:25

I'm not religious and wasn't brought up religious but the crucifixion story really disturbed me at a young age so I get your point!

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 20/03/2024 22:25

I thought this was going to be a thread about how the nails in his hands would just tear through the skin as soon as the weight was put on them so it would be more likely that the nails went through the wrists between the bones.

Anyway... is your DD in a faith school? I went to a Catholic school and there were crucifixes everywhere so it wasn't a shocking thing to hear about. Also if you've sent her to a catholic/CofE school then you must have expected her to learn about this?

If not I still don't think it's particularly shocking that a child learnt about the crucifixion and what easter is about. Has your Dd never asked about Easter?

It was most definitely the Romans 😳

DT’s hadn’t been in a church at that age. No need for them to have.

They can't brainwash them unless you get them young!

My gob is truly smacked 😮

Holy Week/ Easter is the most important part of the Christian calendar. I'm staggered that anyone can grow up in this country (where it's the official religion and where state schools have to hold 'broadly Christian' assemblies) and not understand that this is what children learn.

Have we really reached the point where grown adults think it's all about bunnies and eggs?

Maybe some of us prefer it to be about bunnies and eggs because the other story is bollocks?

cakeorwine · 20/03/2024 22:28

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 20/03/2024 22:25

God wanted him dead.
God made Judas betray Jesus.
All part of the plan

Judas probably had no control over what he did

Lesina · 20/03/2024 22:30

I was raised a Catholic and I am completely comfortable about the crucifixion of Christ as it was part of of the Christian belief. Whilst I’m now an atheist I struggle to explain the Easter bunny thing. Where did the Easter bunny come from?

KnickerlessParsons · 20/03/2024 22:30

Lots of people were nailed to the cross, not just Jesus. It was a fairly common punishment.

WarshipRocinante · 20/03/2024 22:32

The nailed to the cross thing is taught right from the start. It always says “nailed to the cross.” She should already know that.

That’s true. There were two thieves on either side of him

Tumbleweed101 · 20/03/2024 22:33

There are two elements to Easter - Christian and celtic. The Christian part is obviously the execution and resurrection of Jesus while the celtic part is the equinox, spring and new life (ie eggs, chick's, lambs etc).

Children need to learn about both elements as both influence our culture significantly. Which one you favour depends on your own views and religious leanings.

MammaTill2Pojkar · 20/03/2024 22:38

Among other things Easter was appropriated into Christianity from Pagan celebrations (to make it easier to convert more people and erase Paganism).

"Easter actually originated as an ancient pagan celebration of the spring equinox. "

Catsmere · 20/03/2024 22:39

Precipice · 20/03/2024 21:54

If she'd ever been to a church (or seen many pictures of Jesus), she can see that often Jesus is portrayed on a cross with the nails also portrayed.

There is, however, dispute about whether crucifixion victims were generally nailed to the cross or tied to it.

And weren't the nails through the wrists and ankles? Through the hands they'd apparently just tear out.

ZenNudist · 20/03/2024 22:39

Shamoo44 · 20/03/2024 22:20

I'm sorry this happened to you. Presumably the teacher didn't hear this anti-semitic bullying.

The Catholic catechism teaches that the Jewish people were not responsible and that Christ died for every single one of us.

Sloelydoesit · 20/03/2024 22:40

I'm also in the camp that new life - eggs, bunnies etc are much more fun to celebrate.
Christians took over the festival to indoctrinate everyone.
And why not chocolate?!!

Flandango · 20/03/2024 22:41

That is the whole point of Easter. Jesus dies for our sins. You may or may not believe it, but for Christians Jesus died a painful death before rising again 3 days later. Being nailed to the cross is a key part of that.
