Jesus held on the cross with nails in his hands

DD5 is in year 1 and has been learning about Jesus at school. Great stuff in the spirit of Easter.

The RE teacher told the class how Jesus was NAILED to the cross.

This is quite graphic for a little girl who believes that the Easter bunny will leave eggs in our garden.

Should I tell school that this is too much info for little ears?

I think the part in the bible that led to the prostitution twaddle was that Mary had 7 devils cast out of her by Jesus. (Don’t quote me I’m Hindu).

Some lonely bitter Christian men, jealous of her relationship to Jesus, decided this meant she was a prostitute.

Pope Gregory thought that Mary of Bethany in the Bible was the same person as Mary Magdalene. Mary of Bethany was a prostitute. There’s also confusion as to the women ( a prostitute) who washed Jesus feet, some believing this was again Mary Magdalene.
There’s no conclusive proof that either of these women was Mary Magdalene.

This is believed, however, to be the source of confusion over Mary

The painting at the Cistercian monastery of the last supper did not contain Mary. that was John
That was a story in the da Vinci code.

And even if Mary did appear in the painting, the painting isn't really evidence of something happening it was a commissioned artwork, not a historical record of the last supper seeing as the last supper would have happened in 33AD and the painting was done in 1494-1498.

Mary of Bethany was not a prostitute either. She sat at Mary’s feet while Martha looked after guests and watched Jesus raise Lazurus (her brother) from the dead.

Luke talks refers to a “sinful woman” but it’s a very different account from the Mary of Bethany story thus appears to be to a different person.

I mean Jesus’s feet ⬆️

Yes but Pope Gregory confused the two and thought Mary of Bethany was the same person as the un named sinful women.

He assumed the sinfulness was because she was a prostitute.

He assumed Mary of Magdalene was the same person as Mary Of Bethany and hence the link to prostitution.
Its now understood they were probably three completely different people.

Basically bitter misogyny as I said above.

Interesting piece on Mary and women in the Bible.

I grew up going to a Catholic church and saw Jesus almost daily up there on the cross. It did make me think how cruel humans can be to one another, and made me wonder why anyone would do that to anyone else.

Of course later on I began to see that state sponsored violent killing and serial killers were seen quite differently (and are now in some countries).

I felt sorry for him, but kind of shied away from the gore - was more interested in Mary as a whole. Giving her gifts of flowers and candles. I grew up to be a pagan, despite the best efforts of the church. Unintended consequences. And I became very anti-church as a teen.

DS also saw images of Christ on the cross around Y1 or 2 and was similar in reaction to your DD.

We did some age appropriate explaining about the Romans and Christ as a rebel who was punished harshly as they thought he might tip over their empire. And was punished according to the laws of the day.

There are 'bloody' bits of all religions tbh.

It is quite grim, but the world holds grim things. The story of the Buddha shows that if we guard our children too much from the world it will come as a mighty shock later.

Personally I have other filters, like not watching the news in front of DS. He does ask questions if he sees images of war in Ukraine/ Gaza when I'm on the BBC website. It is a tricky line to balance.

Just like I used to see the aftermath of bombs etc on the TV in the 80's and once asked 'mum, why are they fighting each other in Ireland?'

Mum sighed, and said it's a long story. She wasn't wrong (I guess that goes for most conflicts/wars).

What a great pope, easily confused bloke who decided to hate on a woman because he got confused.

He clearly also completely misunderstood Christ's teaching too if he decided to hate on her because he thought she was a prostitute. The whole ' Jesus spent his time amongst the poor and dispossessed' thing must have completely passed him by!

Absolutely there's plenty who didn't abide by vows, sold there powers, had mistresses.

God must be a bad judge of character some of the people who are his mouthpieces on earth

Isn’t that just the point of Jesus though.

God recognises a flaw in creation as humans have a propensity to sin.
Enter Jesus to save everyone’s souls.

Unfortunately bad people often rise to the top of their profession. Religion isn’t immune.
