Jesus held on the cross with nails in his hands

DD5 is in year 1 and has been learning about Jesus at school. Great stuff in the spirit of Easter.

The RE teacher told the class how Jesus was NAILED to the cross.

This is quite graphic for a little girl who believes that the Easter bunny will leave eggs in our garden.

Should I tell school that this is too much info for little ears?

What else should teachers cover up? Your child properly handles it better than you.

ASighMadeOfStone · 20/03/2024 21:52

@TaFox is she currently screaming hysterically and refusing ever to go to school or touch anything made of wood again?
Seeing as you said they have had the lesson already?
If yes, then maybe mention to the teacher that your child is a bit sensitive and had a reaction to the lesson.
If not, then what's the problem?

Redglitter · 20/03/2024 21:52

You do realise Easter is actually about the crucifixion & not bunnies & chocolate.

Good luck telling the teacher how to teach

MyLovelyPurse · 20/03/2024 21:52

OP, are you sincerely surprised by this? Really?

As an adult, presumably living in a country with a Christian tradition, you must know the Easter story. I am not in any way religious but of course, like everyone in this country, I know the story about what happened to Jesus.

Your DD can’t be protected from such a foundational narrative, at the centre of our culture, religious or not. And, she will be fine.

If it really happened that is.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 20/03/2024 21:53

Religion. I was brought up catholic.
Still don't know the faff of the Easter bunny....never mentioned in my household.
Even with my child we don't talk about the Easter bunny.... I don't know the meaning of it? Is it like Santa?
I just buy an egg and some crafts!!
I was taught from a very young age that Jesus was nailed to the cross. We even had a statue in our church that was Jesus nailed to the cross...even had a little bit of blood 🤣 I'm off to find a picture to post....

TeenLifeMum · 20/03/2024 21:53

Kids love Horrible Histories (and so do I) but it’s full of gruesome stuff.

ChihuahuasREvil · 20/03/2024 21:53

if your daughter thinks a rabbit will leave eggs in her garden, that’s your fault. None of that has anything to do with Easter. I’m not religious, but seriously, come on.

MamaCM · 20/03/2024 21:53

I imagine the bunnies and eggs were around a long time before Jesus...

Precipice · 20/03/2024 21:54

If she'd ever been to a church (or seen many pictures of Jesus), she can see that often Jesus is portrayed on a cross with the nails also portrayed.

There is, however, dispute about whether crucifixion victims were generally nailed to the cross or tied to it.

Doteycat · 20/03/2024 21:54

Sigh.

Zanatdy · 20/03/2024 21:55

Well it’s good for her to know the true meaning of Easter and no it’s not all about bunnies and fun.

Newuser75 · 20/03/2024 21:55

My son is now in year six but when he was in reception I remember him hearing the same thing at school. The teacher came out at pick up to tell me he had been quite upset about this and had sat with his hands over his ears crying. It's a bit gruesome for the sensitive ones .

EverybodyIsFantastic · 20/03/2024 21:55

HalebiHabibti · 20/03/2024 21:47

It's the same message children have been given for over 1000 years.... how would you like the RE teacher to change it?

Jesus was mildly tickled on the cross?

(In fact, he wasn’t nailed through his hands. The Romans almost certainly crucified through the wrists. Hands wouldn’t have supported the body’s weight.)

Dogdilemma2000 · 20/03/2024 21:55

I mean it’s right central to the mainstream religion of this county - it’s what the whole religion revolves around.

I assume the teacher missed out the bit where the guy on the next cross got his eyes plucked out by crows?

Crucifixion was really common in those days, in the era after jesus's death (70 ad ISH) when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem they crucified hundreds of people daily. I think there's pretty good contemporary evidence that jesus was a real historical figure and was crucified. The rising again bit is harder to prove.

cakeorwine · 20/03/2024 21:56

Having been to more churches in the past few days than usual (on holiday), there was one scene where the 2 people either side of Jesus were tied to their cross and he was nailed to his cross.

It is part of the story though - with the holes in his hand when he rose again.

Left · 20/03/2024 21:56

How grim. I don’t think I’d be super happy about this, hope she’s not upset by it.

OneMoreTime23 · 20/03/2024 21:56

Floralnomad · 20/03/2024 21:45

Im an atheist but even I know that Easter was originally about Jesus not bunnies and eggs .

It was about spring (pre-Christianity). Bunnies and eggs are symbols of eostre which was pagan.

Telomeres · 20/03/2024 21:57

I mean I don't want to say it's a fact because,'y'know, but it's certainly the received wisdom.

You were more than likely taught it yourself and found it so unremarkable you don't even remember.

TaFox · 20/03/2024 21:57

We've never been to church so DD has never seen a Jesus on the cross...

Still? That's VERY graphic for a young child!

I agree with PPs that it's so horrible that they have to be told young when they don't filly grasp the whole thing.

She will be shocked by many things in this life - some children really struggle finding out Easter bunnies, Santa and the tooth fairy are not real 🤷🏽‍♀️.

You will help her get past this like the many children before her.

Createausername1970 · 20/03/2024 21:58

It's what I learnt at a fairly young age.

As someone said, if your hear the story from a young age, it goes in one ear and out the other and you get used to it.

I grew up reading Grimm's Fairy Tales, all illustrated in gory detail and watched Tom and Jerry battering each other with a flat iron. A man being nailed to a cross was par for the course.

OutOfTheHouse · 20/03/2024 22:00

All the people saying that Easter isn’t about bunnies and eggs, you know it was about bunnies and eggs before Jesus, right?

Stoufer · 20/03/2024 22:00

Floralnomad · 20/03/2024 21:45

Im an atheist but even I know that Easter was originally about Jesus not bunnies and eggs .

Wasn’t there some pagan festival around springtime before it all became about Jesus? Doesn’t Christmas also have a pagan background (decorated tree etc) prior to Christianity?

Edited to say, sorry I didn’t see the pps above who already mentioned this!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/03/2024 22:00

Well it’s good for her to know the true meaning of Easter and no it’s not all about bunnies and fun.

Well the original meaning comes from the pagan, pre-Christian goddes Eostre and it was a festival of Spring and rebirth, so definitely more fun than nailing people to crosses.
