To just wear mens swim shorts?

CENqqq · 18/03/2024 16:13

Please help me, I’m going on holiday and I feel very fat. In previous holidays I have not got into a pool and I feel this year I need to for my kids sake. My top half is okay but I hate my bottom and thighs. Even one pieces make me self conscious. I’m thinking I’ll wear a bikini top with men swim shorts? Will be okay? Reason why I’m saying mens is because I ordered ladies swim shorts with tankini but the shorts are so short! You can see half my bum in them whereas I tried on DH swim shorts and they cover me.

any suggestions on what I could wear? I’m really stressing about this holiday.

In similar circumstances I wore rash vest and board shorts, which are basically the same as men's swimming shorts.

CENqqq · 18/03/2024 16:16

Thank you. Did you feel @Octavia64 that the shorts rode up when swimming?

Yes I wear men's swim shorts, I just cut the sprout pouch out first to make them more comfortable.
I bought some women's surf shorts that I swim in, they are very similar to men's and if they can swim in them so can I

You can get swimming costumes which have like a short skirt attached. Would something like that be ok?

Nevermind31 · 18/03/2024 16:18

Wear whatever you want as long as it is meant for a pool - these days there is a wide variety of swim stuff available, a lot of it modest.

CENqqq · 18/03/2024 16:19

Thank you all. @2dogsandabudgie do you have any links for this? I tried finding but I couldn’t see anything really,

@Beetlewings have you got a link for an example of one you wear?

No don't wear that.

Honestly just wear a nice normal swimsuit. In my opinion it looks better than trying to cover up. You are the size you are. Whatever you wear you will look that size. If you wear men's shorts you will look your size but with men's shorts. A normal swimsuit will look miles better. Shave your legs, moisturise and slap on some fake tan. Get a sarong for walking round the pool and beach.

Fwiw, I went to Spain last year. I wore a swimsuit rather than a bikini because I felt self conscious. I actually felt like an idiot because the pool and beach were full of women of all shapes and sizes in bikinis.

TadpolesInPool · 18/03/2024 16:22

I always borrow a pair of DH's beach shorts when doing various activities like canoeing or sailing on holiday. The women's shorts i have found are always ridiculously short!

I'm not good with links, but I googled swimming costumes with skirt and loads of pictures came up.

SpringSprungALeak · 18/03/2024 16:24

@CENqqq

i do, I have some lovely ones I either wear them over a one piece or bikini.

I think the ones with skirts make me look even older, but if you can wear the slimmer fitting ones they'd probably look nice too.

wear whatever you are comfortable & feel good in!! Enjoy your holiday 😊

What about something like this?

Octavia64 · 18/03/2024 16:26

The board shorts I had were quite long and they didn't ride up when swimming,

I also own a Burkini now which is an Islamic swimming costume. It's quite expensive but I really like it.

(For those people who say you should just show off your body - I'm severely disabled and I don't like the comments I get when I do as I look visibly different.)

Not practical help, but I promise your kids won’t care, they’ll just remember having a fun mum who took them swimming

DilemmaDelilah · 18/03/2024 16:27

Just have a look for a swimdress. The supermarkets have a few, I think Tesco had some quite nice ones when I looked, or you could look in an online shop like Simply Be.

I have an added problem in that I had a mastectomy last year so I need to wear a swimsuit with a pocket for my swimboob, and the swimdresses are horrendously expensive, so I now wear an ordinary (post surgery, bought in the sale) swimsuit with a swimskirt over it. That is an option for you as well if you want to wear a bikini too - get a swimskirt for the bottom. Very nearly all of them have the pants bit in - I found it difficult to get one without. Easy to find - just Google swimskirt or swim skort.

Octavia64 · 18/03/2024 16:28

Board shorts (I got mine cheaper and you probably can if you hunt about a bit)

OP, just wear your swimsuit. I was on holiday last week and no one was taking a blind bit of notice as to who was wearing what. There were all shapes and sizes. Just have fun x

Comedycook · 18/03/2024 16:29

For those people who say you should just show off your body

Wearing a swimsuit is not showing off your body. ...or at least that's not how I see it at all. Sorry you get unwanted comments....people can be so rude.

user1471474138 · 18/03/2024 16:29

Wear whatever you want, no one will care. I found some of the surf brands do longer women’s shorts if you prefer

Tatumm · 18/03/2024 16:30

This looks like a good option?

Next do swim dresses, also there's a web site called Meet curve UK which do them as well.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 18/03/2024 16:32

I go abroad a lot.. in fact I'm going this week..I'm a size 24 and l wear swim dresses..
I think with men's swim shorts would be more noticeable.
Try Yours.
Evans
Simply be
Jd Williams.
You can buy longer length.

Those are lovely 🥰

Dartmoorcheffy · 18/03/2024 16:35

I often wear DPs swim shorts. They ate comfy and I don't have to worry about feeling too exposed walking around the beach or pool.

magicstar1 · 18/03/2024 16:40

I wouldn’t go for the swimsuits with skirt. They can feel very heavy when swimming and the skirt part floats up around you.
I got a couple of pairs of board shorts for my last holiday and they were fantastic.
