To just wear mens swim shorts?

Please help me, I’m going on holiday and I feel very fat. In previous holidays I have not got into a pool and I feel this year I need to for my kids sake. My top half is okay but I hate my bottom and thighs. Even one pieces make me self conscious. I’m thinking I’ll wear a bikini top with men swim shorts? Will be okay? Reason why I’m saying mens is because I ordered ladies swim shorts with tankini but the shorts are so short! You can see half my bum in them whereas I tried on DH swim shorts and they cover me.

any suggestions on what I could wear? I’m really stressing about this holiday.

Yet you seem to think it’s ok to tell women they need to shave, moisturise and fake tan in order to be presentable in a swimsuit?

No I'm not. But it may make the op feel more confident.

Fwiw, most people don't notice or even care what other people are wearing or what they look like.

I spent years not swimming with my children and its a big regret of mine. When your abroad you see so many shapes and sizes and no one bats a eyelid. I forced myself to go swimming with mine when y eldest was 5 and have never looked back. I'm conscious of my legs (loads of cellulite) I have some lovey swimwear from shien (plus size section) they do some great tankinis and shorts. I've bought some of their bikinis for this years holiday. Enjoy yourself, life if too short.

Yes exactly this. Nobody gives a rat's ass about what anyone else looks like, they're too busy thinking about themselves. Have fun with your kids as that time passes quickly.

I agree with wear what you'll feel comfortable wearing so if that's mens shorts, wear mens shorts. But where are you going? If France, I think there's a law or something which means you can't wear loose shorts.

I'm not very fashionable and I am a size 20/22 - but I get these sports magic sculpt swimsuits with tiny skirts and feel comfortable in these

I personally think you will draw more attention to yourself wearing men's clothing, board shorts or those weird little bikini shorts that give muffin top.

I say this kindly, as someone with a big wobbly bottom, literally no one cares about your arse, not one little bit. Wear a simple full bum coverage swimsuit from John Lewis, or somewhere similar, so your bits are covered and get in the pool with your kids. Keep a coverup close to the side if you feel better.

The only people that care about you in that pool are your kids, and they think you are beautiful and just want to have fun with you.

If you feel comfortable in mens swimming shorts wear them! I got a pair of women's board shorts from Decathlon and they are less brief than the shorts you get with a tankini so I wear them with a bikini top or over a swimsuit if I want to be a bit more covered up. I think Fat Face and Animal both do women's board shorts too, but I expect mens ones are cheaper and if you cut out the support netting they are basically the same thing.

You asked upthread about swimming skits and George at ASDA has skirted swimsuits and bikini bottoms:

Personally I think shorts are more flattering than swim skirts, but you might not find the same applies to you.

The swim bottoms in m and s are not too short. I saw some yesterday.

DrJump · 18/03/2024 22:12

Board shorts can be fantastic for swimming. Bonus is you need less sunscreen for your legs :(
Or a swim dress if you can find them.
Where something you feel comfortable in.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/03/2024 22:15

I think you should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Men’s swimming shorts if they fit you well sound fine. Or some board shorts designed for women.

I did once have a skirt one and it was a bit annoying as it took ages to dry, but other than that it was fine. I got it because I couldn’t be bothered to sort out my bikini line when I had young kids 😂

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 18/03/2024 22:32

Shein, Bloomchic and yours clothing are my go to. I wear a swimming costume with skirt attached and a pair of short swimming leggings too (they come to a couple inches above the knee). Honestly the best thing I ever did and I LOVE going in the water now xx
Bloomchic are in America but I can't recommend them highly enough. Takes about two weeks for delivery but they're really really great quality and very reasonably priced too 😉

Where are you going on holiday and where will you be swimming, if you are going to be? I think men's swimming shorts might be banned in France, or maybe Spain, in pools, as my brother had to but trunks for him and my nephew. It's for hygiene, they don't want people swimming in clothes they've been wearing out and about all day.

Googled it, it's France, might only be some pools, this article only mentions men.

A law in France forces men of all ages and sizes to wear speedo type pants to public swimming pools, those of a delicate nature look away now...

Another vote here for the Lands' End swim shorts. They come in several lengths. I always get the 9 inch ones as the others are too short for my preference.

It's a shame that the shorter ones always come in a wider range of colours than the longer ones but hey ho. I pair them with a tankini top. For my own comfort, I get the high neck top as I'm quite busty (also size 20/22) and find most others show more than I wish to show.

www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_High_Neck_Tankini_Top__/pp/P_41945.html?dwvar_P__41945_sizeVariation=59&dwvar_P__41945_color=HME

They're not cheap, but I always get mine in the sales, which are a great help. I also find the fabric quality far better than some of the fast fashion brands. The Lands' End tops are thicker fabric and the textured ones are great for coverage.

I hope you find what you're looking for!

TheGoogleMum · 18/03/2024 23:23

I usually wear a swim dress (just a swimsuit with an attached skirt). Board shorts are also a good idea, DD wears those plus rash vest

CENqqq · 18/03/2024 23:27

Thank you so much everyone! You have all been so kind x

There are lots more swimming costumes with shorts now.

What size are you? I'm size 24 and my choice is limited. But even so, Sports direct usually have some, Speedo do them I think.

If you're a bit smaller than me, you'll have more choice. Sometimes they call them "boy leg" so Google "boy leg swimming costume" or similar.

I really like the ones made by Sea Fancy, their ads keep popping up on my Facebook but they don't go up to my size. I'll see if I can find a link.

But if none of them suit, nothing wrong with men's shorts IMO.
