To just wear mens swim shorts?

CENqqq · 18/03/2024 16:13

Please help me, I’m going on holiday and I feel very fat. In previous holidays I have not got into a pool and I feel this year I need to for my kids sake. My top half is okay but I hate my bottom and thighs. Even one pieces make me self conscious. I’m thinking I’ll wear a bikini top with men swim shorts? Will be okay? Reason why I’m saying mens is because I ordered ladies swim shorts with tankini but the shorts are so short! You can see half my bum in them whereas I tried on DH swim shorts and they cover me.

any suggestions on what I could wear? I’m really stressing about this holiday.

I understand, OP - I have very large breasts and last year for the first time I wore a long-sleeved rash top and shorts instead of trying to squeeze them into a costume, only for the fuckers to float back out again. It was unbelievably liberating and I will never go back.

The only word of warning is to ask where you are going on holiday. French municipal pools don't allow any loose fabric at all so you can't wear board shorts or similar.

What on earth are you doing in the pool where other swimmers can see up the legs of board shorts and into someone’s crotch?

it would take some contortion to be able to see my privates while wearing mid thigh length shorts.

If you are swimming breast stroke and someone is behind you i.e in a lane swim session, they would easily be able to see up the leg of a loose board short.
I have loose tankini shorts and w/o the inner bikini bottom, people behind me would def be able to see my crotch.

No don't wear that.

Honestly just wear a nice normal swimsuit. In my opinion it looks better than trying to cover up. You are the size you are. Whatever you wear you will look that size. If you wear men's shorts you will look your size but with men's shorts. A normal swimsuit will look miles better. Shave your legs, moisturise and slap on some fake tan. Get a sarong for walking round the pool and beach.

Fwiw, I went to Spain last year. I wore a swimsuit rather than a bikini because I felt self conscious. I actually felt like an idiot because the pool and beach were full of women of all shapes and sizes in bikinis.

Maybe she just doesn't want her ass out because women are deemed to need to be practically naked to swim ffs.

Comfort is often not about size but coverage. Many people are not happy to parade around in public in their underwear.

OP where are you going on holiday? be aware some places like France will kick you out or force you to strip off as I learned the hard way (the topless old woman in a thong absoloutly fine, but my shorts and t-shirt sleeved sports swimming costume was apparently 'scaring children')

Comedycook · 20/03/2024 14:12

You think women in swimsuits and bikinis on holiday are 'parading around '?

murasaki · 20/03/2024 14:27

Sea fancy are really good, I got a tankini for a holiday last month and the shorts totally covered my arse, and the top has support. Am going back for another one. I felt much more comfortable than in bikini bottoms.

Yeah I don’t get that. Def can’t see up DW’s mens shorts.

Parading = Being on display while moving.

Yes, how would you describe going from place to place in public? unless your the invisible woman.

madeinmanc · 20/03/2024 14:53

Speaking as someone who at one point swam twice a day, you absolutely will see up the short leg of someone swimming breaststroke in front of you. Not sure why someone would question that, tbh.

Because you can’t? DW’s mens shorts are just above the knee, baggy and made of that nylon type stuff, and have the net inner bit like boys/men’s do- you 100% can’t see up them! If it were possible, believe me I’d have noticed!

CharlotteBog · 20/03/2024 15:23

Just because someone has not seen up someone's shorts legs does not mean that this is the same for everyone. If someone says they have seen the crotch of the person swimming in front of them, it's quite rude to state they are wrong.

Parading makes it seem like you're strutting around on purpose for attention. Swimwear is not underwear and if you're a woman wearing a bikini or swimsuit at the beach or pool, you are appropriately dressed for the situation

Exactly. Unless you are going to a beach/pool full of celebs and models, nobody care what you wear/look like.

It’s pretty bonkers to assert that it will happen in the face of evidence to the contrary, and to use that to say someone needs to wear two pairs of bottoms.

The real life evidence is that some people have seen up short legs and others have not.

Parading= putting something on display for the purpose of it being looked at, while moving.

Just walking along in whatever you happen to be wearing is not parading, so wearing a bikini in the appropriate place and walking around is not parading. The intention is not to show off the body/bikini, rather to be comfortable while hot or swimming.

Right, so the assertion that it WILL happen was wrong, you can’t see up all shorts legs. The op doesn’t need to wear two pairs of shorts for fear of giving someone an eyeful.

It probably depends on your interpretation of “board shorts”

I have drag shorts which are loose and bum cheek length, which if worn without swimsuit would give you an eyeful. These are commonly seen in swimming pools, rarely at the beach.

what I think of as “board shorts” are much longer, knee length and not loose/flowy fabric, so they cling to the skin more. I have never seen anyone in these in a pool, only ever doing activities like surfing/paddle boarding. The pairs I have there’d be no way you could see up there, even if you were doing some weirdly too flexible breaststroke.

Yes, knee length board shorts of the kind seen on floppy haired surfers on home and away.

There is sun protection spf50 swim leggings and colourful rash tops. Very handy for water parks / watersports.

SkaneTos · 20/03/2024 22:51

Late reply here, but wanted to add something to the thread.
Someone recommended a swimming costume with an attached skirt.
They can be really cute, but the ones that I have tried had one issue -
when I stepped into deeper water the skirt floated up to the surface, in a Marilyn Monroe-way! Not the effect I was after, especially since I chose it for cover up reasons. Instead I got a kind of tutu-look. This might not happen with all swimming skirts, but I wanted to mention it.

OP, I hope you will find swimwear that you feel comfortable in, and that you will have a great holiday!

Ikeepbuyinganimals · 22/03/2024 22:20

Consider swim leggings. I have some and they give me the confidence to go swimming with ginormathighs! You can get knee length ones or amazon have some that are in between length and okay. Also, Asda currently have some tankini bottoms which are very slightly longer than the standard.

MysticFelineScream · 31/03/2024 21:44

I wear swim cycle shorts from yours with a tankini top. Find them very comfy to swim in & I swim twice a week. The top takes slightly longer to dry and they aren't the cheapest but worth every penny to make me feel confident swimming.
