To just wear mens swim shorts?

Please help me, I’m going on holiday and I feel very fat. In previous holidays I have not got into a pool and I feel this year I need to for my kids sake. My top half is okay but I hate my bottom and thighs. Even one pieces make me self conscious. I’m thinking I’ll wear a bikini top with men swim shorts? Will be okay? Reason why I’m saying mens is because I ordered ladies swim shorts with tankini but the shorts are so short! You can see half my bum in them whereas I tried on DH swim shorts and they cover me.

any suggestions on what I could wear? I’m really stressing about this holiday.

Maybe get a low cost pair of mens swim shorts from Primark or a supermarket. Then you can choose whether to wear them or not.

I used to wear mens swim shorts on the beach in the UK with a very top when I lived beside the sea . I appreciate that's different to being on holiday.

I go abroad a lot.. in fact I'm going this week..I'm a size 24 and l wear swim dresses..
I think with men's swim shorts would be more noticeable.
Try Yours.

You can buy longer length.

I wore bikinis when I was size 28…more people take a second look at my loose saggy skin now at size 12/14 than ever used to. Not one shiny shit given by me

I happily wear men’s swim shorts. There’s usually a lot more choice than there is for women’s swim shorts and they tend to be longer and have pockets (also, the ‘girly’ patterned ones tend to end up in the sale/TKMaxx so they’re often really cheap).
I do recommend trying them on before buying though. Sometimes the mesh lining is quite tight on the hips/thighs even if the shorts fit/are baggy everywhere else.

I wear them because they’re comfortable and easy for running around with babies and toddlers (and they mean I don’t need to worry about my bikini line). I usually wear them over a swimming costume or with a bikini top.

wear whatever you feel comfortable with.

I wear modest swimwear due to faith but also just not a fan of being exposed in public and am very serious re sun protection

I bought an Adidas long swimming top which was lovely and comes to just below my hips. I wore this with swim leggings.

I also bought a few rash vests which I wore with swim leggings

shorts are also a good option, just have to make sure the fabric is quick dry and appropriate for swimming.

Get a lovely swimsuit and some fab cover-ups on hand for pool to lounger dash.
Like fancy kimonos or linen shirts - don't mess with sarongs... they aways look sloppy and fall off.

For those people who say you should just show off your body

Wearing a swimsuit is not showing off your body. ...or at least that's not how I see it at all. Sorry you get unwanted comments....people can be so rude.

Yet you seem to think it’s ok to tell women they need to shave, moisturise and fake tan in order to be presentable in a swimsuit?

Yogatoga1 · 18/03/2024 18:30

Try surf brands. I wear a rash vest at all times, often with board shorts.

i don’t feel out of place not wearing a bikini. At least I can actually get in and have fun swimming without worrying about sunburn and my boobs falling out a bikini top, or the pants falling down if I go down a slide.

Yupom · 18/03/2024 18:33

I always wear men’s swim shorts, with a rash guard shirt, I much prefer them

Ap42 · 18/03/2024 19:37

I spent years not swimming with my children and its a big regret of mine. When your abroad you see so many shapes and sizes and no one bats a eyelid. I forced myself to go swimming with mine when y eldest was 5 and have never looked back. I'm conscious of my legs (loads of cellulite) I have some lovey swimwear from shien (plus size section) they do some great tankinis and shorts. I've bought some of their bikinis for this years holiday. Enjoy yourself, life if too short.

These look good

I don't mind my bum or legs it's my belly which really needs to be covered, but I'm thinking of buying men's swim shorts - did you know that a lot of them have ZIP POCKETS?? So useful. It really irks me that I'm expected to prance about in figure hugging lycra while dh gets comfy shorts with a zip up pocket for all his shit. Harrumph!

Hols24 · 18/03/2024 19:52

Surf shorts with a bikini top or rash vest looks good I think and will help you feel more confident.

I'm not keen on the swim skirts/dresses personally and never feel they cover much more than a regular swimsuit.

DuchessNope · 18/03/2024 19:52

I wear board shorts over a swimming costume. Wish I’d discovered this earlier, I’m so much more comfortable on the beach especially.

DillDanding · 18/03/2024 19:53

I have just been on hols and I’d say wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

I saw all sorts of shapes and sizes. I wouldn’t be a fan of swim dress styles as they look overly modest and like your apologising for being fat. No-one cares. Comfort is all that matters.

Herdinggoats · 18/03/2024 19:55

Absolutely!

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 18/03/2024 19:57

I do this, I'm tall and fat, so wear tankini tops and men's swim shorts. Primark had loads of different colours last year so I was able to match them really well so they looked like a women's set.

They also have zip up pockets and cost less than £5, as opposed to the teeny Lycra women's swim shorts for £20 with no pockets.

I feel this too, they are really only worn by overweight women, and I’ve been there so no criticism here.
i think a pair of shorts is better, if it makes you feel comfortable

Just get women’s ones, they are readily available.

ApoodlecalledPenny · 18/03/2024 20:14

I love the idea of board shorts - I’m going to do that for summer with a tankini top. I’m just sold on the pockets!

Notanotheruser111 · 18/03/2024 20:18

I have swim leggings which are great. I use to try men’s shorts but they don’t fit properly and feel uncomfortable

Neverpostagain · 18/03/2024 20:21

Landsend womens board shorts. With a tankini, rash vest or similar. I don't know any young women who wear skimpy bikini bottoms anymore. Board shorts look much fresher imo

WeightoftheWorld · 18/03/2024 20:25

I always wear swim shorts or a legsuit/boysuit, whatever they are called. Nothing to do with being fat for me as I'm a size 8. I just don't like to feel like I'm in my underwear in front of everyone and don't feel comfortable with parts of my arse on show. I have absolutely no issue obviously with people who feel confident and happy in the skimpiest bikini or whatever, that's absolutely fine, but I don't, and it's nothing to do with my size.

Wear what you feel comfortable in OP. Nobody is arsed. I've never had anyone look at me strangely for being slightly more covered up at a pool before or if they have I haven't noticed cos I wouldn't care anyway, nothing to do with them. Sports Direct usually sell cheap swim shorts and legsuits etc for women.

InSpainTheRain · 18/03/2024 20:25

Wear whatever you are comfortable in. No one else cares.

LeedsZebra90 · 18/03/2024 20:25

I have a lot of scars on my legs so always wear board shorts with a bikini top. Vinted have loads of womens boardshorts if you don't want to spend a lot of money.
