To just wear mens swim shorts?

Please help me, I’m going on holiday and I feel very fat. In previous holidays I have not got into a pool and I feel this year I need to for my kids sake. My top half is okay but I hate my bottom and thighs. Even one pieces make me self conscious. I’m thinking I’ll wear a bikini top with men swim shorts? Will be okay? Reason why I’m saying mens is because I ordered ladies swim shorts with tankini but the shorts are so short! You can see half my bum in them whereas I tried on DH swim shorts and they cover me.

any suggestions on what I could wear? I’m really stressing about this holiday.

I've worn shorts on and off for years. No reason other than they are more comfortable for me.
Never known we couldn't. I have a lovely bum (even if I say so myself 😁) but prefer swimming in trunks and a bikini top which shows off all my lovely stomach rolls.
Wear what the fuck you want, don't be dictated by society about what women should wear or what we should look like.

MarmitePizza · 19/03/2024 08:20

I do this all the time, but I wear men’s black swimming shorts over (or under in fact) a normal black swimming costume. The legs stay down much better than on a women’s swimming costume with legs and as usual on women’s ones the legs are too short anyway.

I’ve never seen anyone looking at me as if I’m odd!

sbplanet · 19/03/2024 08:21

I always wear 'boyleg' swimsuits, some are longer shorts than others and some more comfy when swimming. There's a selection here from Sports Direct, reasonable prices if they don't suit and great if they do! :)

This is so cheering; i'm old now and always felt a bit grumpy that women and very young girls seemed to be expected to wear quite uncomfortable clingy and body exposing stuff while boys and men wore much more sensible and comfortable beach wear. But obviously not any more, great stuff!

I don’t think it’s an expectation, if tht was the case no one would buy the teeny tiny stuff, everyone would be in the full coverage stuff and shorts etc have always existed.

it’s a choice which becomes fashion

Well, lets agree to disagree

I probably shouldn't have said don't wear that, in all fairness.

But otherwise you are misunderstanding my post. Of course wear what you want. But I see especially when it comes to holidays, women full of angst about swimwear. I have been too. If the op genuinely wants to wear men's shorts, then do it. If she's doing it because she thinks it will look better, it won't. If anything I think it will draw more attention to her rather than less.

I accept that your intentions were good but telling women they look better in a swimsuit/bikini than covering up is not helpful. No one will be able to tell OP is wearing men's shorts, they won't have 'MAN' written on them. It's just more pressure on OP.

The people who sit and stare at women wearing rash vests and swim leggings need to be challenged so that they accept the clothes as part of the norm.

I think folks are deliberately misunderstanding your post.it was clearly intended to be kind, and obviously slapping on some fake tan etc can make you feel a bit better, I always look better than when my milk bottle white legs are out.

you clearly were not saying she had to do this. some folks just love a pile on. Saw someone else having a go and thought they would give you a kick as well.

No one is deliberately misunderstanding anything.

Her actual words were 'No, don't wear that', so of course she was going to be challenged.

And you seem to love a pile on yourself.

Landsend womens board shorts. With a tankini, rash vest or similar. I don't know any young women who wear skimpy bikini bottoms anymore. Board shorts look much fresher imo

I swim most days and Landsend swimsuits are amazing. Watch out for there sales. I wear a normal swim suit in long but they have loads of choice for shorts etc.

Yes and I did say I shouldn't have said that. If the op will genuinely feel more comfortable than fair enough. But it won't look better imo. Women shouldn't feel that they need to look like a supermodel to wear a perfectly ordinary item of clothing. And so many women including myself worry about this before a holiday but once you get there you see so many ages/body shapes on the beach, you wonder why you were panicking.

I agree that women shouldn't feel they need to look like a supermodel to wear a swimsuit, but you telling OP shorts do not look better than a swimsuit is the flip side of the same sexist coin. Shorts, leggings, rash vests should all be normalised, just like swimsuits and bikinis.

Comedycook · 19/03/2024 09:05

I always wore sleeves because I thought my arms were fat. They are 😂. So I'd put on cardigans and cover ups even on a hot day. Then I thought fuck it. My arm is fat whether it's covered in material or not. So I don't always wear sleeves now...and you know what. No one runs screaming from me in the street. Small children don't burst into tears at the sight of my arm. Literally no one cares.

Untethered · 19/03/2024 09:09

I'm glad you are now happily wearing what you want.

I think it's better that women go to the beach in shorts if they want to rather than go at all because they don't want to wear a swimsuit.

wheresmyshoe · 19/03/2024 09:22

I wear this: www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/slazenger/lycra-xtra-life-boyleg-swimsuit-ladies-354743

Search legsuit or triathlon swimsuit if the link doesn't work.

I felt like a 1920's bathing belle in mine as it was really rather chic on. Ideal with a wide brimmed hat and a cocktail.

Polly7122 · 19/03/2024 09:43

Being a plus size lady a like the swimwear from shein as it has skirts to hide me thighs. Enjoy your holiday and just wear what make you comfortable

SignoraVolpe · 19/03/2024 09:50

A Spanish lady of v. large proportions wore thong bikini bottoms on the beach.
Nobody cares, I only noticed because I was in awe of her body confidence, she carried it off so well.

Beetlewings · 18/03/2024 16:16

Yes I wear men's swim shorts, I just cut the sprout pouch out first to make them more comfortable.
I bought some women's surf shorts that I swim in, they are very similar to men's and if they can swim in them so can I

Sprout pouch 🤣🤣

NancyPickford · 19/03/2024 10:46

I had an epiphany a couple of years ago when light dawned that at the beach and pool there will always be women younger than me and there will always be women older, there will always be women slimmer than me and there will always be women fatter. I will never see these people again, so why should I worry what they think about how I look?
Having said that however, I do wear swimsuits or tankinis with boy legs or whatever they're called. I like a company called Sea Fancy, they have swim dresses, tankinis and retro-styled swimsuits etc.

Figment1982 · 19/03/2024 10:46

Do it OP - I recently started doing this and I feel so much more confident around the pool and in the water. I wear a tankini top with them but in fact plan to find a t shirt type top for next time.

I absolutely cannot wear normal swimming costumes anymore as the shape of my body means that half my stomach is exposed (I'm a size 24/26 and all of my weight is on my stomach).. and swim dresses/swim skirts just look and feel awful on me.

Theonlymelster · 19/03/2024 11:02

I recently went on a snorkeling trip to Belize where it is very hot and wanted coverage. I wore a long sleeve rash vest and these bottoms:

They are swimming shorts but like thin cycling ones with a pant inside and high waisted. I am a 16 bottom and they were extremely comfortable and flattering.

Yonique 3 Piece Plus Size Swimsuits for Women Tankini Tops with Sports Bra and Swim Capris Athletic Bathing Suits https://amzn.eu/d/285XV1x

These are great. Much happier in these, plus like the fact can add the top to it.

swooshes · 19/03/2024 13:05

These give me confidence to go in the pool. I hate my legs so much, shorter swim shorts would still look awful on me, and the swim dresses don't help in the leg department!
