To just wear mens swim shorts?

CENqqq · 18/03/2024 16:13

Please help me, I’m going on holiday and I feel very fat. In previous holidays I have not got into a pool and I feel this year I need to for my kids sake. My top half is okay but I hate my bottom and thighs. Even one pieces make me self conscious. I’m thinking I’ll wear a bikini top with men swim shorts? Will be okay? Reason why I’m saying mens is because I ordered ladies swim shorts with tankini but the shorts are so short! You can see half my bum in them whereas I tried on DH swim shorts and they cover me.

any suggestions on what I could wear? I’m really stressing about this holiday.

Lots of options like this on Amazon if you search "boy leg swimsuit".

To just wear mens swim shorts?
unsync · 19/03/2024 00:07

Decathlon are good for all manner of swimwear. I'm happy to be in a cossie as I couldn't give a shiny shit what other people think, but will also swim in a rash suit for sun and jelly protection.

RogueFemale · 19/03/2024 00:10

I'd look for a swim skirt to go with a bikini top as it'd be more feminine than men's shorts (and get both in the same colour, e.g. black). You can also cover up your lower half with a lightweight sarong in between swims.

Also, holiday destination makes a difference. For example, in Greece nobody gives a flying fuck what you're wearing on the beach, whereas in Italy you do feel people are watching/judging you.

PoochiesPinkEars · 19/03/2024 00:10

I love board shorts and a bikini top, suits my style and I love it.

Frozensun · 19/03/2024 00:13

Tongue in cheek - if you need male genitalia to operate any clothing item, it’s not for you.
Realistically, work out what you are comfortable with and wear it! Or, if you know anyone that sews. Boardshort material is generally available

Lindtnotlint · 19/03/2024 00:18

I like swim leggings and long too from calypsa. I prefer very full coverage and I don’t care if it shouts “fat”. I think I probably shout fat whatever I wear in the pool and it means I don’t burn or have to shave 😃

BadgersArses · 19/03/2024 00:23

I have had these from Lands End. I burn easily so these are good especially with a rash top. They do different lengths as well so you can pick longer or shorter to suit. They are expensive when not I. The sale but you can normally keep an eye out for a discounted pair. <cheapskate emoji>

Think about what you will be doing in your swimwear - will you be actually swimming or just paddling? Pool or sea? Do you want to wear just your swimwear out of the water? Do you need it to dry quickly?
Personally, I wouldn't wear a swim dress in water unless I was just paddling in the shallows. As soon as you properly get in the water, the skirt sorted of blooms up around you, and you look like a giant jellyfish. Plus they are heavy and take forever to dry. I go for swimwear that actually fits, and sits properly on my waist, shoulders and chest - for me, that's high waisted swim briefs and a swim bra. It means I can actually swim properly, and not spend half my swim adjusting my swimwear, plus there's nothing less flattering than ill-fitting swimwear. They dry quickly too and I'm happy on a sunlounger in them, but if I do want to change, I usually have my changing towel/robe with me.

This. I hate the swim skirts. They just look awful, IMO.

I do buy swimsuits with shorts in, and chest support.

Fwiw my super fit friends all wear men's shorts when we swim. I think that they look very cool!

I have a sarong for walking around by the pool, which I love.

But another one to say, please don't hold yourself back worrying about what others will think of your body. Have fun with your DC. No one cares.

Enjoy your holiday!

Have you seen the reviews on https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/seafancy.co.uk ?

Oh no, I hadn't seen that! 😯

I'd never ordered anything as they're too small - the ads follow me around Facebook and I always wish I could order them.

Looks like it's been a lucky escape!

I'll see if I can get MN to delete my post, thanks..

Afforgato2 · 19/03/2024 04:07

How about Juliet Turnball she makes various swimwear, different styles ?

Personally, I don't care what other people wear
I have been on holiday & seen burkinis, thongs, nude, surfers & all ranges in between.

What I do care about is that myself & other people enjoy themselves on holiday & during water activities.

I have noticed that some female swimwear says "control" etc. I have never seen these words on male swimwear. I find this very offensive to females.

We all have bodies

Enjoy yourself !

No don't wear that.

Honestly just wear a nice normal swimsuit. In my opinion it looks better than trying to cover up. You are the size you are. Whatever you wear you will look that size. If you wear men's shorts you will look your size but with men's shorts. A normal swimsuit will look miles better. Shave your legs, moisturise and slap on some fake tan. Get a sarong for walking round the pool and beach.

Fwiw, I went to Spain last year. I wore a swimsuit rather than a bikini because I felt self conscious. I actually felt like an idiot because the pool and beach were full of women of all shapes and sizes in bikinis.

“Honestly” posts like these are so unhelpful. Telling her what not to wear is extremely arrogant.

The OP doesn’t want to wear a normal swim suit.

Respect her choice and you and others should stop pushing her to conform.

You are preventing the normalisation of women wearing whatever the fuck they want to wear.

Just wear what you are comfy in and have a lovely time on holiday 💐

I probably shouldn't have said don't wear that, in all fairness.

But otherwise you are misunderstanding my post. Of course wear what you want. But I see especially when it comes to holidays, women full of angst about swimwear. I have been too. If the op genuinely wants to wear men's shorts, then do it. If she's doing it because she thinks it will look better, it won't. If anything I think it will draw more attention to her rather than less.

I think folks are deliberately misunderstanding your post.it was clearly intended to be kind, and obviously slapping on some fake tan etc can make you feel a bit better, I always look better than when my milk bottle white legs are out.

you clearly were not saying she had to do this. some folks just love a pile on. Saw someone else having a go and thought they would give you a kick as well.

Swim leggings? Looks like sportswear.

FusionChefGeoff · 19/03/2024 07:36

I've had ladies super short shorts but recently got a pair from Decathlon that are MUCH longer - more like short cycling shorts. so you might find some that cover you properly if you look again.

Advent0range · 19/03/2024 07:36

I've only read the first page of responses, but yes just do it OP. If it makes you feel comfortable it sounds like a good solution. Enjoy your holiday!

SprainedBum · 19/03/2024 07:37

Have a look at 365 swimwear (or swimwear 365 or whatever it's called) they have a huge range of stuff

FunLurker · 19/03/2024 08:02

My bf use to wear 3/4 leggings under her costume, due to a injury to her thighs. She also wore bikin tops and cycling shorts. No one was bothered as most was trying to hide their own wobbly bits. I wear a costume but have one of those towels that go over the head, not sure what their called but like a really long fitted poncho. I then use a sarong to walk to the pool if I'm feeling conscious.
Hope you enjoy your holiday.

itsgettingweird · 19/03/2024 08:07

Decathlon do womans sports shorts with the cycle short built in.

They are longer and I wear them to swim in and they dry quick too.

Also sainburys had some decent ones in last year and I managed to get a patterned pair which are much nicer than just my plain black decathlon ones.

I wear them as we tend to go to holidays with water slides Grin
