‘Just now Labour MPs prevented debate on a new law to protect children and single sex spaces.

Instead they used parliamentary time to discuss ferret name choices.

@Keir_Starmer is terrified of debate on safeguarding & his MPs actively work to ignore the concerns of constituents’

You’re on a hiding to nothing on here, OP.

Toastandbutterand · 15/03/2024 15:59

Except 12 conservative MPs did this too. Against 9 labour MPs.

Why do you think that?

No, they haven't. Much as I disagree with their stance.

The first bill was a bill brought in good faith (Animal Welfare), which I 100% support. However it was the likes of Labour who were filibustering. It worked. They are a disgrace.

They couldn’t even debate sex-based rights and child protection. Because they knew they can’t support their stance. They were terrified to have to answer any questions about it.

If anyone was in doubt about how much Labour don’t support women and children, they know now. Labour disgust me.

You are far more optimistic than I am if you think that this gross demonstration of lack of care will cause much, if any, fuss.

Toastandbutterand · 15/03/2024 16:12

Tory MPs were asked to filibuster too.

If it really means that much to the Tory's they have other ways to make this law. They didn't need to bring a private members bill

It's all smoke and mirrors to make you think they support you, when in actual fact they don't.

This isn't what happened. This isn't true.

12 Tory MPs
9 labour MPs.

Indeed. The Tories are dead in the water so Labour can be as appalling on safeguarding and women's rights as they like.

Is that as depressing as Biden vs Trump, or is it about the same level?

What a ridiculous state of affairs.

So did I.

pointythings · 15/03/2024 16:33

So it's terrible that Labour MPs engaged in this, but fiiiiine that (a larger number of) Tory MPs did exactly the same thing? Please explain the logic here, if there is any.

lifeturnsonadime · 15/03/2024 16:35

Party politics aside it's disgusting that a bunch, of what I assume were mostly men, preferred to talk about ferrets than child safeguarding and women's rights.

I understand the points that the Tories could introduce this without it being a private members bill but that doesn't make it right for known MP trans activists to prevent a discussion. I didn't watch the debate but I am aware that Lloyd Russell- Moyle, of shouting at woman infamy was one of those involved.

The fact is no Labour MP should be advocating for any of this. They've seen the harms to women, they've seen the Cass review and the NHS taking action to prevent children from being prescribed puberty blockers, (which is akin to chemical castration in terms of side effects for some kids), and they want to actively prevent legislation being passed to stop any of this.

I don't care that the Tories are bad. I don't care that women have it worse under the Tories blah blah blah. WTAF are Labour doing? The last I heard (out of Starmer's mouth / or written words no loess) they're going to make things worse for women and children, with talk of their hate crime legislation to mirror what's about to be introduced in Scotland, calling a man a man could be illegal. Then they will make children receiving therapy for identifying as trans and any difficulties that gives them (when we know that most kids grow out of trans identification) post puberty because there is ample evidence, unlawful to because they'll class that as 'conversion therapy'.

So there are 2 possibilities really, neither sit very well with me, the first is that Labour doesn't give a shit about children & women and is not following the science or evidence OR they must have some very generous trans activist donors.

Makes me sick. If you are going to vote Labour and don't want this harm to women and children please please please let your Labour candidate know. They will get away with it and say they didn't know if you don't tell them.

ChateauMargaux · 15/03/2024 16:39

I despair of politics.. why can our elected representatives not debate a matter thatbis important to many of their constituents?

BestBadger · 15/03/2024 16:40

I doubt it. The Tories pushing millions of women and children into poverty over the last 14 years, slashing council funding and leaving services for women and children in tatters probably outweighs it.

Linda Riley

Since Riley has resurfaced, attacking Sharon Davies, for defending single sex sports, I though it would be timely to capture some of Riley’s claims to fame. Here she is allying herself with Labour …

No. I’m annoyed if any Tories did the same thing. The one who introduced the first bill did so in good faith. I haven’t got a tally of time spent by each politician talking, I’d like to see one.
