‘Just now Labour MPs prevented debate on a new law to protect children and single sex spaces.

Instead they used parliamentary time to discuss ferret name choices.

@Keir_Starmer is terrified of debate on safeguarding & his MPs actively work to ignore the concerns of constituents’

So it's terrible that Labour MPs engaged in this, but fiiiiine that (a larger number of) Tory MPs did exactly the same thing? Please explain the logic here, if there is any.

CCHQ put out a call and thought MN would be stupid enough to go down the Labour don't know what a woman is rabbit hole yet again 🤷‍♀️

😂😂 that’s ironic. I thought that about you after I read your previous comment.

About PMB's rarely passing?

Eta, oh you mean about KB putting her name to the PMB. Yeah, I got that wrong, I admit. Too furious at her tweet to think straight!

Redrosetat · 15/03/2024 18:30

IClaudine · 15/03/2024 17:57

Badenoch's tweet is infuriating and misleading. She is a liar, like all the rest of the Tories.

No. It is 100% accurate. You however are not.

Mordaunt is an idiot and has always been a TWAW nutjob.

You said that Truss was pro self id - she is not and voted against it. Maybe get your facts straight.

And this is what Liz Truss said in September 2020:

"In an attempt to combat lengthy NHS waiting lists for transgender people, Truss said the government was opening three new gender clinics this year. Truss said she was “deeply concerned at the distress” the long waiting lists could cause and the move should result in them being cut by about 1,600 patients by 2022."

She also said:

"The Government would reduce the fee to a “nominal amount”.25 On the 4 May 2021, the Minister for Women and Equalities announced that the fee would be reduced from £140 to £5, in order to make the process “more affordable and remedying one of the key issues that was identified by transgender people in the GRA consultation and the National LGBT Survey”.

Of course, on top of this there is the teeny, tiny matter that the Tories have been in power for 14 years and have done zip, nada and nothing at all about any negative transgender issues whatso fucking ever. Even though it is completely within their power to do so.

ginasevern · 15/03/2024 18:09

Yes, I'm aware of the GRA and there's a link below for anyone else interested. The GRA had different and stricter criteria. Anyone reading the link might be interested to see that Penny Mordaunt affirmed the position that "transgender women are women" in 2017.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_Recognition_Act_2004

People could shout TWAW from the rooftops but without the GRA underpinning it women would be fine with single sex spaces.

It’s the 2004 legislation that created the foundation for where we are. Women and children impacted sadly

daliesque · 15/03/2024 18:33

No no no. You’re avoiding the questions. I’m rattled about Labour. We expect more from them. They need to answer these questions.

Why are you holding the opposition up to a greater standard than the actual government? You knkw the people who are in charge of the country now...not some undetermined point in the future.

The fact that she didn't specify it was a PMB is very misleading. Same as her "trade deal" with Texas. The woman is a charlaten.

Notonthestairs · 15/03/2024 18:35

If you understand the PMB process why are you so surprised that they didn't get to it? The debates are not timetabled and neither are the speeches. A tiny proportion of PMBs are enacted.
Why havent the Government used their position to timetable a debate?

daliesque · 15/03/2024 18:36

Surely if she cared so much she’d have bothered to show up?

Ahh now, that's expecting actual govt ministers...the equality minister no less...to do something practical and useful instead of stoking yet another culture war.

Because I’m a Labour supporter. Rather, I was. I want them to be better. But they are failing.

Aw. The equalities minster forget to pick this up for some reason.

Why let such a marvellous opportunity slip through her hands if the PM and her agree and support Truss.

The answers are conspicuously absent from this bill; which on its face, looks perfect to meet the case they said needed to be met

bombastix · 15/03/2024 18:38

Just not now, obviously

Yep, attendance is key.
They need 100 to vote in favour so every attendee counts.

MojoMoon · 15/03/2024 18:41

Kemi's party is in government.

If it was that important to them, the Conservatives control the order paper and they have had plenty of parliamentary time to bring this forward already.

In that case it was doomed from the start. There were only about 30 people in the chamber across both benches when I looked.

IClaudine · 15/03/2024 18:42

I guess we shouldn't be surprised at Badenoch stirring the culture wars. As 30p said, that is all the Tories have now.

misteek · 15/03/2024 18:43

3 more conservatives only.

Imagine being able to thwart the "culture wars" by stating that the sky is blue. Why wouldn't Labour do that?

JessS1990 · 15/03/2024 18:45

Redrosetat · 15/03/2024 18:24

She was third. It’s reasonable to think they could manage their expensive time to cover 3 PMBs. Instead one took up 4/5 of the time. Because they made it do so.

Indeed Truss' bill was listed third today, very often on Private Members Bill days only the bill listed first gets debated, so really there is no surprise that the 3rd bill was not debated.

Does Sunak still think that a woman is whatever Boris says one is?

bombastix · 15/03/2024 18:49

The cynicism of all this is off the charts. A bill no legal analysis, a placing on the list that means it will never be read or voted on, a group of MPs who talked over and over on animals, an equalities minister who cares about Twitter more than Parliament and an ex prime minister who can suddenly produce an extremely cogent draft of complex legislation.

Utterly mystifying

Have I understood correctly that it is impossible for a government to change a law once it has been enacted by a previous parliament?

EasternStandard · 15/03/2024 18:52

I don’t see why a debate or information is bad

If women are interested, and although many pp say they are not many are, let us hear it and build up information on what people think

Do we know if those former Tory MPs who spoke in the important debate on control our borders this morning, were informed before Badenoch's tweet that they had, had the whip removed?

Some posters a little earlier in the thread appeared to find the information that a previous equalities minister said that self-id was fine to be bad information.
