To have really long hair in my 40s?

MonicaBingaling · 10/03/2024 20:22

Recently turned 40 and have long blonde hair (past my boobs) and don’t feel comfortable with it now at my age. Although it’s healthy hair and people often say I look younger than my age I feel almost uncomfortable with it on me now whereas loved it in my 20s and 30s

have booked to get it cut next week 🤣

I don’t like the look some women have (long hair fillers Botox dressing as if in 20s) like desperately clinging to youth. I think it’s far more classy to have short/medium length hair, less make up etc

just wondered what others opinions are?

btw no offence to anyone who’s older with long hair it’s just how I feel about it on myself

yabu - long hair on older women is fine

yanbu- shorter is better

I was out clubbing before covid hit.

I never forget that an older lady I knew had a thing about people over 40 with long hair. One day she said, 'isn't it sad when what you thought was a young woman turns round and ends up being a much older lady'. For the record, I have long hair. I retorted that I would rather be mistaken for much younger 50% of the time if only from behind than not at all!!!!
Seriously, everyone should do what pleases them and not worry about what others think etc..

It kinda sounds like a bit of a midlife crisis?

Turning 40 and wanting to redo your hair and wardrobe?

What does 40 represent to you? I mean this question sincerely.

Is it possible you're a bit nervous or have some hangups around aging that make you want to change your image to feel more in control?

I think it possibly is a midlife crisis if I’m being honest!

I don’t feel how I look in mirror my clothes etc and hair fit my new age if that makes sense? And it takes forever to do hair everyday which is such a pain in the butt

also hair looks lovely when all washed and styled then next day like rats tails
🤣

I’ve got long hair in my 40s and it isn’t even great / thick (the usual ‘condition’ set on being allowed to have long hair past 40). Being short wouldn’t make my hair less rubbish but it would make me feel less myself and that’s why I have it, not because I think I’m deceiving anyone into believing I’m still 25.

I’m channelling a relative who maintained a jet black beehive into her late 70s and was gutted when it finally had to be cut because she couldn’t keep up with caring for it.

Redtedbed · 10/03/2024 20:55

Are you my mum? She keeps asking me when I'm going to chop my hair off. I'm 42. Today I even wore a mini skirt.

Delatron · 10/03/2024 20:55

It just depends what suits you rather than an age thing. Some people look gorgeous with bobs and shorter hair. Long hair looks good if it’s in good condition. I find now I can’t really grow mine beyond my shoulders. And I suit it slightly shorter.

Agree with another poster that really long hair doesn’t look good on anyone. (Below bra strap).

Scirocco · 10/03/2024 20:57

My hair's almost long enough to sit on. I like it. When I stop liking it, I'll chop it off again. Have your hair how you like it and stop worrying about other people's.

I'm 59 with hair just past my waist 😁 but then I've always gone against the tide. I live a rather alternative type life/bit bohemian so it's no big deal in the circles I generally pass through. I have lots of grey too, no colouring. I don't try and hide from the fact I'm old!

I love the boho long hair though , I’ve seen many ladies of all ages in this style pull it off as the clothes and hair look very beautiful and quite natural

That is stunningly beautiful!

Thank you, needs a brush, sofa slobbing Sunday image.

what do you mean, you’re only a day older than the day before.

shadyboots2024 · 10/03/2024 20:31

I'm turning 40 and don't give a shit about classy so no, won't be cutting my hair
My hairdresser is booked up until September anyway Grin

Your hair is beautiful!

BusySittingDown · 10/03/2024 21:03

Meh, I'm 40 and have waist length hair, it's in really good condition. I also dress like a teenager 😂.

No fillers or Botox though. I probably look about 20 from behind and a hatchet faced, hag from the front. No fucks given here.

I often wear my hair in two French or Dutch braids too.

DiscoBeat · 10/03/2024 21:06

I've seen some beautiful long hair on people much older than you.

Josette77 · 10/03/2024 21:07

Over 40, all look gorgeous.

They all look gorgeous because they suit long hair and their hair is in great condition. I prefer Christy Turlington when her hair is a bit shorter - she looks good with shoulder length or above as her bone structure is amazing.

PrincessTeaSet · 10/03/2024 21:10

I think hair of any length is fine at any age, I am not a fan of treatments to make people look younger though, they never work and just make people look a bit desperate/vain/weird! Not even keen on dyed hair unless it's for fashion.

I admire people with good dress sense who can choose right clothes and accessories to suit them. I also admire people who are happy in their skin and don't need any of that.

I do think it's icky when people have really long loose hair and let it trail over other people or food in the supermarket but that isn't age specific!

Meowandthen · 10/03/2024 21:11

If you want to cut your hair, do it. How other women of any age wear theirs is their business and nothing to do with you.

Turning 40 doesn’t mean we all go for Botox or A-line skirts and twin sets with “sensible” haircuts.

ClawdeenWolf · 10/03/2024 21:12

I'm 43, I've got a French bob and I have zero class.

I went through the same when I turned 40 but I also went through a marriage breakdown so I also had to refind me.

I ditched the frumpy, boring clothes and refound my inner rock/grunge chick. Out went the boot cut jeans and breton tops, in came the skinny jeans (occasionally ripped) with oversized jumpers, plaid shirts, leather biker jackets and trainers. I dyed my hair during lockdown to a lighter sun-kissed brown.

It's my style it's what I feel confident and comfortable in. Stick me in a midi skirt and cut my hair to a bob and I'd look awful.

Sconenjam · 10/03/2024 21:35

Classy ? You mean chavvy

I’m 50’s
long curly
very little grey.

Dont give a fig about what anyone else thinks. I dress and groom ( or not) for me, not to keep up appearances or to impress others.

You sound a bit judgy and you contradict yourself in your post.

Squidge123 · 10/03/2024 21:41

I am 46 and have long hair, I always have had!
I have no fillers or botox etc, also i don't wear make up so I keep it natural and look younger than my age so I am told.

Yet another thread judging women.
That's your opinion I'm sure those less classy women don't give a fuck about you or how you look or think.

Goddessonahighway · 10/03/2024 21:45

I recently read an article "How long hair became a midlife status symbol" in the Sunday Times which was interesting. Maybe keep your long hair and know you might be the secret envy of others 😉

Zerotoleranceforgoats · 10/03/2024 20:30

My long hair and Botox look great, thanks 🙏

Mine too and I'm over 50 and I definitely do not look it. What an incredibly judgy post OP.

rooftopbird · 10/03/2024 21:50

@Lampslights your hair is beautiful.
