To have really long hair in my 40s?

MonicaBingaling · 10/03/2024 20:22

Recently turned 40 and have long blonde hair (past my boobs) and don’t feel comfortable with it now at my age. Although it’s healthy hair and people often say I look younger than my age I feel almost uncomfortable with it on me now whereas loved it in my 20s and 30s

have booked to get it cut next week 🤣

I don’t like the look some women have (long hair fillers Botox dressing as if in 20s) like desperately clinging to youth. I think it’s far more classy to have short/medium length hair, less make up etc

just wondered what others opinions are?

btw no offence to anyone who’s older with long hair it’s just how I feel about it on myself

yabu - long hair on older women is fine

yanbu- shorter is better

Loving the hair snaps!

JMoore · 10/03/2024 20:37

I'm 50, and I have long hair. I'm not planning to cut it. Short hair looks ridiculous on me.

My aunt is 66, and has long hair too. I don't think she will ever cut it short. It suits her very well. Neither of us has had any Botox, fillers or other work done. We dress whichever way we want (my aunt is far more elegant than me though).

Duoswimgo · 10/03/2024 20:37

I have long hair in my natural colour and it's very nice if I say so myself. I don't wear much make up though, so hopefully that evens it out a bit?

You do you op. I do know what you are getting at even though I don't agree, and turning 40 is a funny thing in some ways. But your insecurities are your own.

Lampslights · 10/03/2024 20:37

Mine. I’m 50. Keeping it. The unclassy mare that I am. 😂

You're crazy, hair length has nothing to do with anything. As long as it's healthy

juice92 · 10/03/2024 20:39

I hate this idea of 'you need to dress like this or need to have hair like this because you are this age' it's silly. I was somewhere recently and heard a woman say 'after 25 makeup needs to be subtle, not bright colours or anything silly like this, just a little hint of something', I am sat across from them, obviously over 25, with bright makeup on. I'll dress, do my hair and wear my makeup as I like thank you. Why should be stop presenting ourselves in a way we enjoy just because of age?

Hayliebells · 10/03/2024 20:39

What's age got to do with hair? I plan on keeping my hair long forever, I've tried short hair but it's too much faff. Yes I'll probably tie it up as I do now, but might switch to a nice neat bun when it's grey.

beethecrackon24995 · 10/03/2024 20:39

I'm 59 with hair just past my waist 😁 but then I've always gone against the tide. I live a rather alternative type life/bit bohemian so it's no big deal in the circles I generally pass through. I have lots of grey too, no colouring. I don't try and hide from the fact I'm old!

Soubriquet · 10/03/2024 20:40

Wear your hair however you bloody like. I have long hair at 35. Like mid down my back long hair. And I don’t intend on cutting when I hit 40 either. In fact I hope to be an elderly lady with long hair cos that’s how I like it

MonicaBingaling · 10/03/2024 20:40

I am genuinely sorry if I’ve offended anyone I really didn’t mean it in a bad way. It’s just how I feel on myself.

Ive also recently been feeling I hate my whole wardrobe like my skinny jeans etc I feel it needs an update and complete change 😅

I call bingo. We got the skinny jeans 😂

meganorks · 10/03/2024 20:41

I think long hair is fine whatever the age. But I don't really think really super long hair looks good on anyone to be honest. I'm talking to your bra strap or longer (maybe a bit before that to be fair)

EmeraldArtichoke · 10/03/2024 20:41

I actually think that’s a really old fashioned belief that women should have shorter hair as they get older. When my mum was my age it was just the done thing, no debate about it. Now I’m 46 the thought of cutting my lovely hair is crazy, why should I because some outdated notions of class or ageism?!

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 10/03/2024 20:42

I think you're talking absolute shite!

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/03/2024 20:42

FFS now I got to chuck out my skinny jeans 😄

Jk987 · 10/03/2024 20:43

Makes me wonder what else you think women should stop doing once they hit 40. Going to the pub? Flashing any cleavage?

Mumof2NDers · 10/03/2024 20:43

I’m 53 and my hairs way past my waist! It needs a good cut really but I have to wear it up for work so don’t often notice how long it is!

Ambassadorisspoilingme · 10/03/2024 20:44

wtf. This is the 1950’s when you got a ‘mum cut’ at 35. Do what you want with your hair but try and address your internalised misogyny!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/03/2024 20:44

I'm voting YABU because I've never been able to grow my hair past shoulder length 😉

Bet it looks gorgeous, @MonicaBingaling . It's not the 50s, you don't need pearls and a twin set for having the temerity of being over 30.

LaWench · 10/03/2024 20:45

I chopped my long hair off at 42 to a bob. So much easier to dry and look after but I miss my long hair, I'm growing it out.

ShhImThinking · 10/03/2024 20:47

Nooooo! I've had less than ten years of enjoying having a cup size due to pregnant after years of being flatchested. Surely special concession as I didn't get much use out of them?

Worried about the skinny jeans as well as they're all that fits me right now. (Stretchy waistband)

Edited

That is stunningly beautiful!

MonicaBingaling · 10/03/2024 20:49

I think a lot of this because my whole
outfits and hair haven’t changed much since my 20’s and it’s giving me the ick ! And I feel it make me look even older

but this isn’t true. You’ve clearly stated you judge other women on this bizarre criteria you have for being over 40.

I’m 45, my hair is long, it’s dyed an ‘unnatural’ colour and I love bold make-up. Bet I’m more fun than you.

Josette77 · 10/03/2024 20:49

It kinda sounds like a bit of a midlife crisis?

Turning 40 and wanting to redo your hair and wardrobe?

What does 40 represent to you? I mean this question sincerely.

Is it possible you're a bit nervous or have some hangups around aging that make you want to change your image to feel more in control?
