To be upset about a dog's name

DH and I talked about getting a puppy this year.

My parents and family support one football team. I live in the same area and my young DC go to a school dominated by that same team (they are a bit too young to be proper fans but have all the gear)

My DH wants to name the dog after a famous footballer from the biggest rival team. DH is not a football fan at all but he just thinks it would be funny.

I think its weird and a wind up. He's told me off and said I'm taking it too seriously and I'm losing my sense of humour

AIBU to think its not that funny and he is trying to be arsehole for no purpose? We are now at point of not getting a dog after all.

well, if for example you live in an area that supports celtic and he wants to call the dog Ranger, then.............. I wonder if he's as funny as he believes he is. Sometimes it's better to avoid causing unnecessary offense, which YOU get.

Friends who have two adult children who no longer live at home are stuck with a dog called Dobby (named by the older child during their Harry Potter phase) so kids are likely to pick a daft name too.

If he’s so keen on a football name, what about Gazza? Or Bobby [Charlton]? Something ‘classic’ rather than current.

What? If you’re getting a family dog the whole family agrees on the name surely? One person doesn’t just get to choose the name. Why is this even an issue? He says he wants to name it that name, you say haha good one but no. Then you keep coming up with names until you find one you ALL like.
