To be upset about a dog's name

ThatsABop · 03/03/2024 21:48

DH and I talked about getting a puppy this year.

My parents and family support one football team. I live in the same area and my young DC go to a school dominated by that same team (they are a bit too young to be proper fans but have all the gear)

My DH wants to name the dog after a famous footballer from the biggest rival team. DH is not a football fan at all but he just thinks it would be funny.

I think its weird and a wind up. He's told me off and said I'm taking it too seriously and I'm losing my sense of humour

AIBU to think its not that funny and he is trying to be arsehole for no purpose? We are now at point of not getting a dog after all.

I couldn't agree more. If your first principle of looking after a living, breathing creature is a childish squabble about football teams, then I sincerely hope you do not get a dog. You sound like pathetic teenagers and nowhere near responsible enough to care for an animal.

MystyLuna · 04/03/2024 17:22

We have 3 dogs and we very rarely call them by their names. They have all ended up with nicknames.
My husband wanted to call our 3 dog something really stupid. I thought he was joking but he was being serious. I told him it was stupid and we couldn't name our dog that.
The first day we had the puppy my husband called her by this stupid name and the dam puppy answered to it.
I have gotten used to it but we still get weird looks when people ask her name.
But we tend to use a nickname for her most of the time.

Greenpolkadot · 04/03/2024 17:24

It's all a bit childish dont you think

This has to be a Celtic/Rangers thing.

Right, I've googled to understand this.

A typical annoying name would be Larson if a Celtic supporter or Gazza if a Rangers one?

What's that got to do with catholic or Protestant though?

Or would it be a religious name (don't know what that would be)

Northernsouloldies · 04/03/2024 17:27

Celtic is the catholic club, rangers the protestant.they both sing pro Irish terrorist songs full of religious bigotry.

Northernsouloldies · 04/03/2024 17:30

Or known as the bigot brothers by fans of other Scottish clubs.

Tempnamechng · 04/03/2024 17:37

I think although the whole football thing is petty, but your dh sounds like a bit of a goady arsehole. Does he usually enjoy trying to upset people?

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2024 17:38

A good sense of humour requires being able to discern the difference between something that's funny and something that's not. It's your DH whose 'sense of humour' is off kilter. Men who trot out the 'no sense of humour' put-down need reminding of this.

But he's right you may be taking it too seriously... this should have been quashed instantly with an eye roll and 'don't be a dick' or perhaps a different (obviously stupid) name.

SmudgeButt · 04/03/2024 18:01

Bro decided to name his dog after a sports star who happened to have the same last name as his wife. Not a problem until he got divorced and next wife had to shout the ex's name out the door to get the dog in.

Noseybookworm · 04/03/2024 18:03

I think if you are going to get a dog, the name has to be something the whole family can agree on. Most people let their kids name the dog, don't they? Either way, your husband has put forward a name that you don't like so will have to accept that. If he's being an arsehole about it, is he just an arsehole in general?

Mothership4two · 04/03/2024 19:03

We had a neighbour (when I was a child) who called his dog Fanny because she was all black except in that area where she had a lighter coloured spot. He apparently thought it was hilarious at the time. Not so much a year or so later, when his partner told my parents that he got more and more embarrassed having to call her back out on walks and ended up doing a quiet shout that was totally ineffective. I don't remember them ever changing the dog's name though.

wevegotthepower · 04/03/2024 00:07

Why would that be different? Am I missing something here?

Sectarianism. A dog living in a Rangers/Celtic dominated area with the name of a player from the opposite team would be at risk of coming to harm. I really don't think OP is in Glasgow though.

So these people not only take a game far too seriously, they take their imaginary sky daddies too seriously too.

SomeCatFromJapan · 04/03/2024 19:41

There are sectarian tensions in Glasgow and these are expressed through support of either Rangers or Celtic.
They are collectively called the Old Firm and match days require an early kick off to try and curtail the drinking, and a huge police presence. Violence is common and people have even been murdered. It's not pretty.

More deprived areas of the city also tend to be predominantly Protestant or Catholic, similar to parts of NI.

Absolutely, although I don't think actual religion has got much to do with anymore - it's more like tribalism with religious labels.

I'd put money on this dog not being in Glasgow though, because OP said "biggest rival" and both Celtic and Rangers see themselves as being in a different league to all other Scottish clubs so they each only have one real rival. Also, anyone living in Glasgow would immediately get why this is a terrible idea.

MaryMary6589 · 04/03/2024 20:50

If it is Salah, why don't you call it Mo. Mo is a cute name and not obviously football related by itself.

I just came here to see if anyone as said this.
I dont think you are pathetic but if you are considering not getting the dog because of not agreeing on the name....then it tells me you guys are not ready to have one!! I can almost antecipate your future post about how the dog picks on the kids and can't be left alone and it's affecting your lives.
And then you will post on a facebook group that due 'to a change in circumstances' we are looking for a new home for our dog.
🙄

HelenTherese2 · 04/03/2024 23:24

He’s winding you up.

I enjoy winding up people who take football too seriously too.

TwentyFirstCenturyFox · 04/03/2024 23:38

It sounds as though you are taking a joke a bit seriously, very seriously, too seriously.

TrainsPlanesAutos · 05/03/2024 00:14

I’d be afraid that naming a puppy after a widely hated sports figure would encourage shitty little boys with rage issues from abusive families to abuse your puppy. I’ve seen these boys take out their abusive home lives on animals, and they will take any opportunity to abuse your dog. Do not make your puppy a target.

AlwaysTheRenegade · 05/03/2024 02:26

As long as he doesn't want to call it Roy Keane lol
Say it was an Everton name though, could be Toffee for example.

I'm a city fan, but I wouldn't call my dog Haarland (the striking Viking ❤😂) or Foden. Just pick a name unrelated to football, it's not worth falling out over, but if your family are die hard supporters for a club, your husbands way off the mark with his humour. Does he like/ get On with your parents?

Moro93 · 05/03/2024 08:37

This does come across like it could be Rangers/Celtic. Given the complete overreaction by the OP, it seems likely that religion could be involved.

Having lived in areas dominated by this rivalry and growing up seeing the rivalry between family members and their in laws due to supporting opposite teams, it massively pisses me off how seriously football is taken.

Fucking hell, if my marriage was this difficult I'd be packing it in.

Me too, who could be arsed with being married to someone who deliberately upsets you and tells you to get a sense of humour.

MagnoliaBrown · 05/03/2024 08:40

It's a non-existent, hypothetical dog. Really nothing to get upset about.

godmum56 · 05/03/2024 17:40

its my experience as a dog owner, with many dog owning friends, that the dog rarely gets called by the name selected for it BUT personally I think calling a dog something factional is risky though because if anyone does use the name in a public place and there are fan idiots nearby it might not end well for the dog or for the person with the dog.
