To be upset about a dog's name

ThatsABop · 03/03/2024 21:48

DH and I talked about getting a puppy this year.

My parents and family support one football team. I live in the same area and my young DC go to a school dominated by that same team (they are a bit too young to be proper fans but have all the gear)

My DH wants to name the dog after a famous footballer from the biggest rival team. DH is not a football fan at all but he just thinks it would be funny.

I think its weird and a wind up. He's told me off and said I'm taking it too seriously and I'm losing my sense of humour

AIBU to think its not that funny and he is trying to be arsehole for no purpose? We are now at point of not getting a dog after all.

Hmm I think my opinion is different if it's a Rangers/Celtic thing vs any other two teams... if the former YANBU

And that folks shows how fucked up the west of Scotland is.

Just call the dog something nothing to do with football?!

That’s what OP wants to do! Her DH is refusing.

Honestly OP, YANBU to not want your DH to use the dog as a way to needle your family and neighbours. It doesn’t sound like he’s even a fan of the other team, just trying to get a reaction from people when he calls the dog?

It’s dickish, tiresome and I wouldn’t want anyone to think I wanted to be part of it.

QueenBitch666 · 04/03/2024 01:33

You both don't sound mature enough to have a companion animal of any description

BrutusMcDogface · 04/03/2024 01:37

Why do so many people think you’re not being unreasonable?! I mean, this is one of the more ridiculous threads I’ve seen on here. Just laugh and say no, and then agree as a family to call the dog something else.

Dartmoorcheffy · 03/03/2024 21:50

You need to tell us the name 🤣 it's not udogie is it?

Ha!

mathanxiety · 04/03/2024 01:42

I think you take football far too seriously, and this is your husband's way of telling you this.

Lighten up fgs.

I’m not clear that it actually is OP who cares about football. It sounded to me more like her family and neighbours care, and her DH wants to name the dog something provocative as a “fuck you” to all of them.

I’d find that tedious and embarrassing, in her place. I wouldn’t go along with it.

Topseyt123 · 04/03/2024 01:57

How very juvenile.

MississippiAF · 04/03/2024 02:00

Taking football so seriously is pathetic. And yes, that includes the old firm.

Pinkfrlls · 04/03/2024 02:02

I'd be worried about somebody hurting the dog to be honest. Just give it a nice normal non-football associated name. Do you really think though you are cut out to be dog owners? Have you got the time (yes, they need lots), the space, the financial resources to give a dog a forever home - you know for the next 10 plus years? Judging by your husband's level of maturity I think maybe not.

Zanatdy · 04/03/2024 02:16

just get the puppy and tell him straight he’s not calling the dog a name that a) you don’t like and b) is being named that just to wind people up

Why does DH get to decide what your dog is called? (missing the point of thread). Both our DS had a say in our puppy's name - we all decided together.

I think DH is winding you up, but if you are arguing already over a theoretical dog, maybe being a pet owner isn't for you - unless you get stick insects or a goldfish!

32degrees · 04/03/2024 04:16

You should pick a name you agree on.

He's being a twat.

You don't need a reason to dislike a name. It's irrelevant about the football team etc.

You don't like it, so the search continues.

AGoingConcern · 04/03/2024 05:10

Just say no and continue to look for names everyone likes, preferably nothing to do with football.

You both sound unreasonable just for how you’re each handling this. He thinks it would be funny, you don’t. No one should be offended here or turning this into a fight. Move on.

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/03/2024 05:19

So every time someone asks the dogs name, one of you has to explain 'oh it's so DP can wind up X Y and Z about football'...

You're both going to look like massive dicks and trust me, unless you do not walk your dog in public ever, you WILL be repeating this story every bastarding day for the entirety of the dogs life.

He's a tit, and thats before you get into using a living being to annoy others, purposely and childishly setting out to annoy others and so on.

Autienotnautie · 04/03/2024 05:28

I really don't understand why people are being so horrible.

Op I'd just say 'I don't like the name we need to think of something else's

I hate it when people continue with a joke when they are the only one laughing.

ClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 04/03/2024 05:59

Rangers vs Celtic and he wants the dog to be called Nacho.

My guess . . .

Devilshands · 04/03/2024 06:18

It’s a name. It’s hardly a hill to die on. And if you think it is, then PPs are right and you are too immature for a dog.

TBH if I can yell ‘Fatty come’ (Yes, my dog was called Fatty) ‘Fatty, leave it’ at a beach regularly and get over it, you can suck up a football related name!

BreatheAndFocus · 04/03/2024 06:44

He’s being unreasonable. Nothing to do with what the name is but simply because he’s using a living creature as some kind of prop for his stupid joke. When you get a puppy, you choose a nice name that suits it. He sounds completely unsuited to owning an animal and extremely immature.

twohotwaterbottles · 04/03/2024 06:50

People who think football is actually important. Boring. Sounds like you have a lovely relationship btw. 🤦🏻‍♀️

SmellyFrenchyBum · 04/03/2024 06:53

He sounds like an attention seeker. YANBU

That'd be OK because it's after the snack as well.

Fillyfrog · 04/03/2024 07:02

Imagine being upset about this. Surely it's just a joke, laugh it off move on. Bonkers
