To be upset about a dog's name

ThatsABop · 03/03/2024 21:48

DH and I talked about getting a puppy this year.

My parents and family support one football team. I live in the same area and my young DC go to a school dominated by that same team (they are a bit too young to be proper fans but have all the gear)

My DH wants to name the dog after a famous footballer from the biggest rival team. DH is not a football fan at all but he just thinks it would be funny.

I think its weird and a wind up. He's told me off and said I'm taking it too seriously and I'm losing my sense of humour

AIBU to think its not that funny and he is trying to be arsehole for no purpose? We are now at point of not getting a dog after all.

I’d be afraid that naming a puppy after a widely hated sports figure would encourage shitty little boys with rage issues from abusive families to abuse your puppy. I’ve seen these boys take out their abusive home lives on animals, and they will take any opportunity to abuse your dog. Do not make your puppy a target.

Is it Dogba?

😂

godmum56 · 05/03/2024 17:43

PS just re read your OP. It sounds like it would be a seriously silly and risky thing to do if the school kids are involved. BUT I can't help feeling that anybody who takes football that seriously needs to grow up a bit.

sonjadog · 05/03/2024 17:46

godmum56 · 05/03/2024 17:40

its my experience as a dog owner, with many dog owning friends, that the dog rarely gets called by the name selected for it BUT personally I think calling a dog something factional is risky though because if anyone does use the name in a public place and there are fan idiots nearby it might not end well for the dog or for the person with the dog.

This is exactly the reason why I would absolutely refuse to go along with your DH. Imagine if an innocent animal got hurt because of his "joke". In any case, he sounds like a dick if he can't accept that you don't want his "funny" suggestion and move on from it.

MarvellousMonsters · 05/03/2024 17:56

Let him give the dog any official name you like, it really doesn't matter. Primarily because within weeks the dog will have half a dozen nicknames that bear only a vague resemblance to its official name.

Also, anyone so obsessive about a football team that they are upset by a dog being named 'after' a rival team player really needs to get a grip.

Janay55 · 05/03/2024 18:03

If he’s not just winding you up then he’s being a pillock. A pet’s name should be something you all agree on and not something petty. You could always come up with an equally stupid name and insist on that. See how he likes it. 😂😂

Americano75 · 05/03/2024 18:19

If you're from Glasgow I'm 100% behind you. Actually, I'm with you even if you're not. 😆

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 03/03/2024 23:56

I like it. Anything to wind up simpletons who take football seriously.

Simpletons???? Really?? Wow. How ignorant are you?

Middleagedspreadisreal · 05/03/2024 18:28

I totally understand your upset, and passion for football, unlike some of the other posters who clearly have no idea how important it is in people's lives. If my OH even joked about doing this, I'd be kicking him out, getting the dog & naming it what I wanted.

Not at all. I would say anyone who takes a game seriously enough to:

a) Have it tattooed on their body
b) Become their entire identity
c) Resort to verbal abuse & even violence
d) Dress up as players of that game
e) Potentially be upset by a dog’s name

…is pretty damn basic.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 05/03/2024 18:38

Honestly I wouldn’t notice if a dog was named after a football player. Do you really think people would think anything at all? It’s so weird to be that into football. It really is the most tedious thing. Who cares. Just call your dog Didier Dogba and get on with your life.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 05/03/2024 18:59

I read this earlier and I’m still thinking about it. The most multi-level, multi-directional amount of unreasonableness I’ve read in ages. Impressive! 😁

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2024 19:09

And the best bit ...they don't have the dog and hopefully don't get one.

MarchingOnTogether · 05/03/2024 19:10

YANBU! I'm a football fan and I would absolutely say its a deal breaker. Your DH is being a massive disrespectful dick if he's actually being serious about this.

And there's nothing wrong with taking football seriously, I bet half of the people saying that obsessively watch shit like love Island 😂😂

AnnieSnap · 05/03/2024 19:12

The family dog should be called a name everyone likes!

StarDolphins · 05/03/2024 19:16

If it’s a wind up where you ‘pretend’ to the opposing team family members for a day or so (then revealing dogs real name) then I think it’s quite funny & the world needs more of this imo.

I agree its weird but I have lived in places, and there was no religious connotation, where, when there was a home game on, you did not walk around the streets wearing any football stuff except the home team's unless you were in a large group and looking for trouble. I agree though that both sides of this argument need to grow the F up. I really hope they don't get a dog because poor dog.

MaidOfSteel · 05/03/2024 19:37

wevegotthepower · 04/03/2024 17:24

Right, I've googled to understand this.

A typical annoying name would be Larson if a Celtic supporter or Gazza if a Rangers one?

What's that got to do with catholic or Protestant though?

Or would it be a religious name (don't know what that would be)

Football to the Rangers & Celtic fans in Glssgow (and Hearts & Hibs in Edinburgh to an extent) is almost sectarianism. It's horrible.

I think the OP's husband using thisextreme 'rivalry' as a wind up is just plain nasty.

So humans either have to be football fans or “obsessive” Love Island watchers? I worry about you if that’s your world view.

And ok, point about keeping safe from violent football hooliganism, because those type of men’s egos are so incredibly fragile that a dog having the “wrong” name could result in violent rage.

In that case perhaps best not get a dog, eh?

Delphiniumandlupins · 05/03/2024 19:48

Yes he's being an arsehole but only because you are letting him see how it's winding you up. Let him go out with a dog lead on match days and practise calling the name, in a crowd of local supporters. He may decide it's not so funny. Otherwise, say you'll wait until you find a name everyone agrees on (presumably that's how you named your children).

Mamasperspective · 05/03/2024 19:52

DH, grow up and just let the kids name the dog

thebestinterest · 05/03/2024 19:54

Your DH sounds truly immature.

Completelydonechick · 05/03/2024 19:55

I am so pleased that this is the biggest issue in your life. Please be grateful at this time that you need to ask if you are being unreasonable, things could be so much more difficult for you. Get a dog, don’t get a dog, call it whatever, and remember how blessed you truly are!

eggandonion · 05/03/2024 19:55

Our neighbour in Belfast had a terrier called Glens which might mean something to NI people.
If he said Celtic have scored a goal the dog growled. If he said that Rangers had scored the dog went round in circles and barked.
I would not recommend this in certain areas of Belfast.

I think choosing a name for a pet should be a family decision.

Chevybaby · 05/03/2024 19:55

Northernsouloldies · 04/03/2024 00:59

And that folks shows how fucked up the west of Scotland is.

Glasgow does not equal whole West of Scotland.
