To be upset about a dog's name

ThatsABop · 03/03/2024 21:48

DH and I talked about getting a puppy this year.

My parents and family support one football team. I live in the same area and my young DC go to a school dominated by that same team (they are a bit too young to be proper fans but have all the gear)

My DH wants to name the dog after a famous footballer from the biggest rival team. DH is not a football fan at all but he just thinks it would be funny.

I think its weird and a wind up. He's told me off and said I'm taking it too seriously and I'm losing my sense of humour

AIBU to think its not that funny and he is trying to be arsehole for no purpose? We are now at point of not getting a dog after all.

Any dog name will be called out in public on occasions. So YANBU to be unhappy about the suggestion.

Alltheyearround · 05/03/2024 21:43

Anyway, you'll soon be calling him Roger Rogerson, Roggles, Mr Rodg, Roly Poly Biscuit Hoover and all sort of nonsense.

Our cat has a perfectly respectable name, but is more commonly called Pookalino, Pookachino, Pooks and Fluff Tum. You see?

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 05/03/2024 21:43

Lesina why do I sound like a twat? It's a simple AIBU. Would other people be annoyed at their dog being named something they disliked? Or am I overreacting? I might be being OTT but not sure I'm being a twat.
Why do you dislike it op? Because the other team? How ridiculous. Am assuming it probably is like pp have said and is more west Scotland embarrassing shite and its Billy or Tim?

Xtraincome · 05/03/2024 21:46

For The Wire fans, I wanted to call my dog Avon Barksdale, DH didn't let me but it was fun winding him up. We had a laugh, then chose Cassius. It wasn't serious, just a bit of fun.

If it's a family dog just choose a fun name and enjoy hearing your DH shout something ridiculous across a field to call it back. Then, you just change the name to random nonsense as silly dog owners do- Cassius is sometimes simply called 'Maloy' - he answers to it as well 😆

I would just chill out on it OP, and just think of other names for now that are just as absurd.

ilovesushi · 05/03/2024 21:51

He sounds annoying.

I wish I could go back to university to study why people are so obsessed with sport teams. There is a very strange tribalism to it. When people say ‘we won’, I really find that weird!

Maybe people feel the need to be part of something and the only way to do it is to ensure someone else is excluded.

Anyway, call your dog whatever you want. If your DH is taking the piss ignore him.

Read Terry Pratchett's Unseen Academicals, it will explain all. Funny and profound. And I'm not remotely interested in football.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 05/03/2024 21:35

Good grief. You really don't get it at all.
I'm a middle-aged woman and have followed football all my life. I go to every game I can and watch many on tv, yet I have never been a threat to anyone, at a game or travelling on public transport. I don't 'dress like a footballer' but I do wear a club shirt. There are millions of passionate football fans all over the world. It is very, very wrong of you to tar us all with the same brush as the ones you have an opinion about. I totally understand where the op is coming from, as will many, many more.

Wearing a football shirt is dressing like a footballer. I mean, I like boats but I don’t dress up like Captain Birdseye. If football people were reasonable then there would be no issue calling the dog after a different team or player, after all it’s only a dog and the name of a team or player isn’t exactly a slur or anything, it cannot offend anyone. Unless the offended party is a simpleton.

Wetblanket78 · 05/03/2024 21:55

It's just a name get over it. A friend of mine had a dog called Tadpole as a child (Tad) for short. It couldn't get worse than that.🤣🤣🤣

nc1q84r0v · 05/03/2024 22:03

Well if he's like most men all responsibility for the dog will be dumped on you when you get it. So name it something he hates - and train it to respond to that!
He sound like a major dickhead.

RatatouillePie · 04/03/2024 10:13

If you're disagreeing then probably best not to get a dog!

A man round here let his kids choose the dogs name. It's called Sausage. Sausage likes running off, and I can't help but laughing when I hear him walking round the woods shouting:

"Sausage! Has anyone seen my Sausage?!?" 😂

A friend called her dog Puccini which is now abbreviated to Poo.

Love these! I have a neighbour with a 'Custard'. He says he gets funny looks sometimes as people think he's shouting for 'Bastard' 🤣

The best dog name, would be if you had a spaniel... called Daniel.

An old colleague had Holly the collie!

It sort of ended up part of her name, 'how's Holly-the-Collie/did a great walk with Holly-the-Collie/leaving early cos Holly-the-Collie is at the vets tonight' etc 😁

@Northernsouloldies no we aren't actually. That is where you show your complete ignorance. There is no Old Firm. It is a term that the papers and later media came up with to excuse the poor behaviour and bigotry of Rangers FC. ( Not all of their fans but a great deal of them). Lump them all together . Those of Irish Catholic descent have one of the highest reported no of hate crimes in Scotland. Scotland's manky wee secret. Well glad not to live there anymore! Where the first thing people ask is "what school does your weans go to? " Always coming from one side as well.

Spot on. Also, we all learned (my siblings and friends) at a young age to reply "Partick Thistle" when anyone asked us what team we supported. As you know, being asked that was a very regular occurance in Glasgow.

I bet you'd then get badgered about "who you really supported".

Yeah and when my clearly Irish name was disclosed there was really no hiding 'what side I was on' even though I was never really into football. I'll never forget my supervisor calling me a fe*ian bastard one day after Celtic won a game. I wasn't even aware of who won the match, didn't give a shit. Glasgow life eh!

Zwicky · 05/03/2024 23:42

I don’t find tedious windup merchants charming and that element would bother me. I’m not a football person but I’m from a football area and I think it’ll you aren't it’s difficult to get what it can be like. I wouldn’t want to send my primary aged kids off to school to tell their mates about their new puppy and have them mocked when they reveal the name. I wouldn’t want my parents to think my DH had given his dog a name deliberately to take the piss out of them. I just don’t have that sense of humour where I’m ever going to think that that’s anything but dickish.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 05/03/2024 23:47

DH does not sound mature enough to be a responsible dog owner, maybe put off getting a puppy until he grows up.
A dog can live for 18 years.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 05/03/2024 23:49

The initial suggestion of it might have been a ‘haha that’d be funny’ moment. Then move on.

Him pushing and pushing it to the point of you not wanting a dog any more - shows he’s thick, unfunny, and doesn’t actually care about your feelings...

I did some research after getting interested in this and there is a Jewish Celtic player refusing to play for the club due to antisemitism from the fans?
