To be upset about a dog's name

ThatsABop · 03/03/2024 21:48

DH and I talked about getting a puppy this year.

My parents and family support one football team. I live in the same area and my young DC go to a school dominated by that same team (they are a bit too young to be proper fans but have all the gear)

My DH wants to name the dog after a famous footballer from the biggest rival team. DH is not a football fan at all but he just thinks it would be funny.

I think its weird and a wind up. He's told me off and said I'm taking it too seriously and I'm losing my sense of humour

AIBU to think its not that funny and he is trying to be arsehole for no purpose? We are now at point of not getting a dog after all.

Friends who have two adult children who no longer live at home are stuck with a dog called Dobby (named by the older child during their Harry Potter phase) so kids are likely to pick a daft name too.

If he’s so keen on a football name, what about Gazza? Or Bobby [Charlton]? Something ‘classic’ rather than current.

I like the name Dobby. Dobby the dog! It’s not like they called it Professor McGonagall, which would be ridiculous - not least because she is a cat person 🐈‍⬛.

Not at all. I would say anyone who takes a game seriously enough to:

a) Have it tattooed on their body
b) Become their entire identity
c) Resort to verbal abuse & even violence
d) Dress up as players of that game
e) Potentially be upset by a dog’s name

…is pretty damn basic.

That's your opinion of ALL football fans is it? Wow. How ignorant are you?

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2024 20:05

Religious bigotry spreads further than the confines of Glasgow on the west coast unlike the Ne of Scotland.

Sallyh87 · 05/03/2024 20:07

I wish I could go back to university to study why people are so obsessed with sport teams. There is a very strange tribalism to it. When people say ‘we won’, I really find that weird!

Maybe people feel the need to be part of something and the only way to do it is to ensure someone else is excluded.

Anyway, call your dog whatever you want. If your DH is taking the piss ignore him.

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2024 20:10

They don't have a dog.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 05/03/2024 20:11

Go for it OP, go with DH
You never know the team that the family supports may also get a player with the same name

If you want to wind him, family, friends and England - name your dog, Maradona,
just joking,lol.

Marcymae · 05/03/2024 20:11

My dream dog is called Kenny Dogleash, but would get to be called King Kenny for short. Not sure I would inflict it on my family if they were Everton fans!

Gagagagagaga · 05/03/2024 20:11

I don’t think either of us could name a footballer.

It’s a pretty accurate summary. People in here are worried about a dog’s name because primitive football people might be triggered by it. Because they like a game. People talk nonsense about no-go areas because of sharia law and muslims. They don’t exist. But there really are no-go areas caused by football people. Because they like a game. Public transport can be a really hostile place to travel on match days. Caused by football people. Because they like a game. A dog owner is being advised not to choose a football related name in case football people abuse the animal or owner. Because they like a game.

When I read the title of the post, I thought YABU, however having read it YANBU! Your husband is being very odd. Is there something else going on? If not, just call the dog Rover and be done with it.

GenerationWhy · 05/03/2024 20:20

OP I totally see why you aren’t happy about this. Regardless of whether you are football fans or not (in fact, the football side of things is actually a bit of a red herring), it seems like your DH is prepared to gaslight you and accuse you of having a sense of failure loss when he’s going out of his way to make you upset. And given that your dog will, with any luck, live to be a ripe old age, this is a ‘joke’ that he’s prepared to make you feel upset about for possibly two decades. I’m pretty sure he’s aware of this being a ‘joke’ that will run and run, and perhaps that’s part of what continues to give him such mirth about it. Personally, I’d be worrying about this marriage - or rather, his view of it - and I’d be asking him some questions about how he sees it moving forward.

The best dog name, would be if you had a spaniel... called Daniel.

@Northernsouloldies actually Celtic is a Scottish club with Irish roots. It has always been open to all, unlike Rangers who banned Catholics until they signed Maurice Johnston on 1989 or something. Their most famous manager Jock Stein was not Catholic. When asked if he would sign a Protestant or Catholic player of equal skill, he replied that he would sign the Protestant player. When asked why that was, he replied, "because I know I can go back and sign the Catholic lad the next day". ( Because Rangers wouldn't touch them.)
Celtic also sign about Irish history and Anti Empire/anti colonialism. One man's terrorist etc Rangers sing the much despised Famine song telling the Irish dysporia to "go back " to Ireland in a lovely charming way. Yeah look up the words . Beautiful.
Please stop spreading falsehoods .

Justtellingya · 05/03/2024 20:23

*sing

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2024 20:25

Yawn.. couldn't give a fuck about either of the bigot brothers.seperate cheeks of the same arse.

Justtellingya · 05/03/2024 20:35

@Northernsouloldies no we aren't actually. That is where you show your complete ignorance. There is no Old Firm. It is a term that the papers and later media came up with to excuse the poor behaviour and bigotry of Rangers FC. ( Not all of their fans but a great deal of them). Lump them all together . Those of Irish Catholic descent have one of the highest reported no of hate crimes in Scotland. Scotland's manky wee secret. Well glad not to live there anymore! Where the first thing people ask is "what school does your weans go to? " Always coming from one side as well.

HollieMumOf3 · 05/03/2024 20:35

My dogs name is furgy but when he's naughty he gets full named Alex Ferguson

Justtellingya · 05/03/2024 20:36

@Northernsouloldies you clearly do because you spread your ill informed nonsense.

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2024 20:38

Not a thing in Ne Scotland and it's the west coast shame not Scotlands.bye bye just telling ya.

AsanteSana · 05/03/2024 20:43

I have to ask...

Are the rival footballers from Kenilworth Rovers and Barking United?

Northernsouloldies · 05/03/2024 20:44

That's more like it ,very good 😊

T1Dmama · 05/03/2024 21:33

So He’s choosing a name you don’t like just to wind up your parents and knowing your kids will likely support their local team and hate the dogs name later in life??
Tell him this isn’t a joke, it’s a dog who could potentially be with you for the next 10-20 years depending on breed!! It has to have a name that people won’t groan at 6 months down the line, or the people walking it won’t be embarrassed to call out !!
Your DP sounds very immature!!

Good grief. You really don't get it at all.
I'm a middle-aged woman and have followed football all my life. I go to every game I can and watch many on tv, yet I have never been a threat to anyone, at a game or travelling on public transport. I don't 'dress like a footballer' but I do wear a club shirt. There are millions of passionate football fans all over the world. It is very, very wrong of you to tar us all with the same brush as the ones you have an opinion about. I totally understand where the op is coming from, as will many, many more.

Everythinggreen · 05/03/2024 21:36

If that's the only reason for you not getting the dog then just get the dog and make sure you register under the name you want with the vet and microchip company. You then call the dog by its name and if he wants to make his life hard using a different name so be it.
My cats and dog have their name, then nicknames from those names, then another from the nicknames and so on (quite a common occurence in pet owners). They answer to all their names now bless them 🤣

Alltheyearround · 05/03/2024 21:38

You could take a leaf out of DH's nonexistent book of football and call him, ooh what's that famous footballer? Oh yeah, Roger Beckham.

(Conversation going to bed 2 nights ago, cracked me up as MIL wanted our DS to be called Roger because it's a good strong name, unlike the one we actually had already chosen, which she thought wasn't)
