To think you don’t do this when someone is taking you out for a meal…?

DH took his sister out for dinner to celebrate her birthday at the weekend - it was a nice restaurant so he knew it wouldn’t be cheap but his sister ended up ordering the most expensive food items on the menu & had 8 cocktails at £20 a go!!!

The meal ended up costing hundreds and hundreds of pounds - so much so that I’ve had to bail him out so he could get through the rest of the month.

If someone is treating me to a meal, I always make sure I don’t choose the most expensive thing on the menu - surely this is just basic manners ?!

AIBU? Or was she really grabby to do that ?

It’s rude

Galeforcewindatmywindow · 20/02/2024 17:04

Well surely he asks where she is taking him for his birthday and you tag along. ..?

Comedycook · 20/02/2024 17:05

Agree that it's rude. I'd always try to choose something mid price range at the most if someone else was paying

sprigatito · 20/02/2024 17:05

Why didn't he speak up at the time?! Surely he could have said something to his own sister before it spiralled to "hundreds and hundreds of pounds"? "Steady on Helen, I'm not a millionaire... have a cocktail, but then we'll have to switch to something less ruinous"

I'd be furious with him. Is he always a wet fart?

Movinghouseatlast · 20/02/2024 17:05

8 cocktails? 8? She must have been very ill after that.

PhoenixStarbeamer · 20/02/2024 17:05

It's really rude yes. Is she usually like this? I'd say something to my sister during the meal if she was taking the piss. Was he drinking with her?

CacenCaws · 20/02/2024 17:06

The 8 cocktails is taking the piss!

TyneTeas · 20/02/2024 17:06

£160 on just drinks for one person!?!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 20/02/2024 17:06

The food I couldn't get worked up over, sometimes I only like the more expensive items on the menu, but ordering the cocktails was very cheeky. He should've told her that he couldn't afford to pay for them too before she'd ordered the 2nd one!

FrenchandSaunders · 20/02/2024 17:06

Christ 8 cocktails at £20 a pop! Very rude.

rumred · 20/02/2024 17:06

Why on earth didn't he say something at the time? Bonkers

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 20/02/2024 17:07

How was she still standing after 8 cocktails?

And why didn't your DH say anything?!

Ouchmyarse · 20/02/2024 17:07

He’ll know to stick to Toby Carvery next time.

SkaneTos · 20/02/2024 17:07

How did she feel after 8 cocktails???

Desecratedcoconut · 20/02/2024 17:08

Eight cocktails over one meal? That's ridiculous.

Although, he could have told her to rack it in when it started to get silly but he clearly just let her carry on, knowing it was going to put him in a precarious position and that you'd bail him out. So you are paying for her cheeky fuckery and his fragile ego. Sorry op, I'd be pissed off with the pair of them.

paulMcCartney · 20/02/2024 17:08

I wouldn’t feel I had to avoid the more expensive food unless I had some reason to think the other person couldn’t afford it- I’d just order a normal meal.

8 cocktails is crazy!

DollyLolly1989 · 20/02/2024 17:08

She's taken the absolute piss :(

museumum · 20/02/2024 17:09

8 cocktails is crazy with dinner!!!
But sometimes I really want a steak, I do usually offer to pay towards it.

Lampslights · 20/02/2024 17:11

If it costs hundreds and hundreds then so did he op, he also spent up.

DeedlessIndeed · 20/02/2024 17:14

If you are really being treated, you should be able to pick whatever you want from the menu.

What isn't appropriate is ordering to excess. So 2 mains would be greedy, 8 cocktails is greedy etc.

Pollyannamex · 20/02/2024 17:16

Why didn’t he say something? The sister is a CF but your partner is also an idiot for allowing that to happen.

CommentNow · 20/02/2024 17:17

Did she drink 8 cocktails though or did he get pissed with her and think youd be more sympathetic to the mean sister story than of him spunking that much cash in one go?

greedyguts18 · 20/02/2024 17:19

Thanks for the replies - honestly I’m livid with them both !!

i said to him why didn’t you say something but he said he felt like he couldn’t!! He’s usually not shy in coming forward so I don’t understand why he didn’t say something to her.

DH only drinks beer so he definitely wasn’t joining her on the cocktails.

OP posts:
IslayAnn · 20/02/2024 17:19

Blimey 8 cocktails?!! Couldn't DH have stepped in after the first couple to say she's paying for her own cocktails if she wants any more though?
Agree about the meal though, I always go for something cheap to mid priced if I'm being treated!

MILTOBE · 20/02/2024 17:21

I would have to speak to her and ask her why she felt free to spend so much of your family's money.
