What does "cleaning up after dinner" mean to you?

Pretty much what the title says. This is obviously very light hearted and is a discussion I've had and wanted to gauge others' opinions.

Cleaning up after dinner means:

YABU = putting things in the dishwasher or washing up. That's it.

YANBU = as above but also giving the hob and worktops a quick wipe over and leaving the sink clean (not full of food scraps). So leaving the kitchen clean and put away.

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/02/2024 10:21

Loading the dishwasher, wiping the tops down, mopping the floor cleaning the sink etc filling the kettle and putting the mugs out for the morning.

Mine is glass as it is induction, takes 8 seconds to wipe it down.

Shinyandnew1 · 18/02/2024 10:22

Load the dishwasher, wash anything that doesn’t fit in up, wipe the surfaces and hob (induction hob, not one with lots of bits) and sweep/clean the floor.

I clean the hob when it needs to be cleaned. Sometimes it's everyday, because it's been used. Sometimes it can go a full week because we haven't used the hob at all.

I spray mine and give them a wipe. Takes no time!

My job is glass and it needs cleaning every time it's used. It takes two or three minutes.

Love it when there's a clearly non biased AIBU! 😄

I do - just a quick wipe so splashes of liquid or food that spat out of the pan don't dry hard. Why would you not? Takes one minute.

I also hate when DH clears up after dinner and doesn't wipe down kitchen work surfaces and dining table. The job isn't finished if there's still crumbs and smears on the surfaces.

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2024 10:24

I do clean my hob every day, not an in-depth clean but definitely a surface level wipe over! Spray and wipe. It doesn’t take me more than 2 minutes to keep on top of. The cleaner takes all the fiddly bits off weekly and properly does it and we have the oven cleaning company out twice a year to give it a thorough clean.
Our kitchen is the main area we hang out and if people stop by we would usually be there too. Don’t want cooking grease or fat spills to be on display! Also, it’s just dirty 😂

I do! It gets a quick wipe over every time it's used... much easier and nicer looking than leaving a load of built up shit on it and having to scrub away!

I don't mean a big clean, just cleaning off cooking debris once it's all cooled down. Chilli spillage that is only an hour old is a lot easier to clean than once it's been left to dry and harden over night!

Do the dishes (don't have a dishwasher) wipe the units and clean the hob and brush the kitchen floor, polish the dining table.

I clean the hob whenever it’s been used, so maybe not every day but most!

Cleaning up after dinner for us means cleaning whatever needs to be cleaned for the kitchen to be clean.

Tagyoureit · 18/02/2024 10:26

Cleaning up after dinner includes
loading the dishwasher, washing the pans, wiping the dining table, wiping the worktops and stove, quick sweep or hoover, cleaning the sink and emptying the bin if it needs it.

PossumintheHouse · 18/02/2024 10:27

It means doing the washing up. Preferably my partner doing the washing up.

Spinet · 18/02/2024 10:27

Is this thread about my husband never wiping the surfaces? Drives me mad.

Blimey. You can come live with me if you like.

BobnLen · 18/02/2024 10:28

Filling the dishwasher and wiping down surfaces

gingercat02 · 18/02/2024 10:28

The second, obviously! Dishwasher, wash up glasses, pans, rince recycling, etc. Wipe down sides, wipe hob, front of oven/microwave, brush the floor

Simonjt · 18/02/2024 10:29

Pots in dishwasher, sides cleaned, hob and splash back cleaned, sink cleaned. Oven door wiped down if we’ve used the oven.

I do if i cook on them. Just a quick wipe over. I can't bear the sink full of scraps. Wash dishes, empty sink of food scraps, wipe hob, wipe over worktops, brush floor.

OppsUpsSide · 18/02/2024 10:30

Doing whatever needs to doing to make it look/smell like the dinner never happened.

I hate any food reminders outside of eating time.

XpelairHamPortal · 18/02/2024 10:31

Load dishwasher and put on if full, wash up the stuff that can't be dishwashed, wipe down surfaces and hob / splashback, put away anything from the worktops that's out when it doesn't need to be, wipe down the dining table, run the hoover round to pick up crumb spray from DC2, make cup of tea, done.
