Pretty much what the title says. This is obviously very light hearted and is a discussion I've had and wanted to gauge others' opinions.

Cleaning up after dinner means:

YABU = putting things in the dishwasher or washing up. That's it.

YANBU = as above but also giving the hob and worktops a quick wipe over and leaving the sink clean (not full of food scraps). So leaving the kitchen clean and put away.

@PossumintheHouse 🤣

My 4yo DD can't seem to eat without food landing on the floor and I can't stand it being trodden on and then traipsed all throughout the house and the hob is a glass top so easy enough to clean every day.

Marmite27 · 18/02/2024 10:33

*Any ingredients/clean equipment left out put away.
*Table cleared and wiped down, floor swept if necessary.
*Dishwasher unloaded/loaded/unloaded, anything un-dishwasherable hand washed, dried and put away.
*Sink, cooker and sides wiped down.

burnoutbabe · 18/02/2024 10:33

To me just put stuff in dishwasher and stack anything that needs washing up neatly (and clean off old food/leave pan soaking)

Not sweeping the floor!

Movinghouseatlast · 18/02/2024 10:34

I don't even load the dishwasher! All I do is clear the dining table. I don't always do that.

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

I do, it's induction and gets wiped every day.

Cleaning up after dinner here means loading the dishwasher and wiping all the surfaces as a minimum. Leaving a couple of things neatly to be washed up that aren't dishwasher safe would be OK as long as they've been rinsed and stacked. It could also include putting the bins out if they're full and hoovering if needed.

Clean it whenever it looks dirty no?? That might be twice in one day or it might not be for 2 days…
But OP clean up to me means no visual trace that the meal ever happened. I’ll make an exception for a pan that needs to soak in the sink but that’s it.

Theraffarian · 18/02/2024 10:37

Dishes washed and ideally dried and put away . I have a gas hob so tend to clean it the next morning as the rings stay hot for a while . Also I cook , wash up as I go , so work surfaces cleaned then . Husband does dishes after , another reason why I clean the hob the next morning I guess.

Mine is glass as it is induction, takes 8 seconds to wipe it down.

But whatever type of cooker, it's always easier to 'wipe once a day' than scrub encrusted dirt away once a week...

TempleOfBloom · 18/02/2024 10:42

It means putting the cork back in the wine bottle if there is any left, and picking at the still greasy and juicy bits of chicken before it goes in the fridge.

positivesliceofpie · 18/02/2024 12:01

My kitchen is spotless i live alone so dont have much to clean up.
I do a quick spray wipe all table tops and cooker fridge every day.

the80sweregreat · 18/02/2024 12:04

For me , it does mean cleaning the whole kitchen , putting the dishwasher on ( if needed ) and cleaning the hob
I'm not a clean freak, but I like it tidy and Amy waste food is put in the green bin outside.

the80sweregreat · 18/02/2024 12:06

I try to get the oven cleaned professionally once every six months or so as I've tried everything and although the grill racks are easy enough to clean the rest of it isn't as much.

Loading the dishwasher, wiping the tops down, mopping the floor cleaning the sink etc filling the kettle and putting the mugs out for the morning.

Put the mugs out for the morning?! Do people really do this? Why?!

Comedycook · 18/02/2024 12:08

But anyway a lot of these descriptions are basically just cleaning the kitchen. Clearing up after dinner means clearing dishes away, putting dishwasher on and wiping any surfaces that have been used for food prep.

If you have an induction hob you do. It's the same as wiping down a side.

EDITED note to self RYFT before saying the same as 30 other people

Caspianberg · 18/02/2024 12:09

Clean everything.
Any Food in bin, dishes in dishwasher and anything hand washed. Table sprayed and wiped. Toddler chair wipes. Floor hoovered quick around toddler chair if crumbs. Spray and wipe surfaces (includes induction hob), and sink. So fully cleaned. Only takes a few mins as it’s down three times a day (ie after every meal)

Is this thread about my husband never wiping the surfaces? Drives me mad.

My worst is when he just wipes up an obvious spillage and doesn't just wipe the whole thing. We have about 3 sq ft of work surface so it's not a big job!

Patrickiscrazy · 18/02/2024 12:09

🤣 I love the name Pocketfluff, btw.
Cleaning up after dinner? Washing up and pretty much leaving the kitchen as it was before dinner.
But then I have OCD. 🥴

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

I’m absolutely useless at all housework but if I’m cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, I wipe the hob down along with the surfaces every time.

I like cooking. But clearing up the kitchen afterwards is dreadful. I hate that part.

JacksonLambsEatIvy · 18/02/2024 12:14

Mine is a gas hob. Give it a bit of a wipe is hardly a military operation.

I do!

Onthegrid · 18/02/2024 12:21

We share the cooking as both work, no Dc at home now, whoever cooks also clears up we eat late as that works with our schedules.
Clearing up is stacking the dishwasher, putting away anything that has been used (oil, spices, scales etc), empty and rinse out the steamer or any other appliance and a quick wipe of any spills. If there is more washing up it is piled up neatly.
I wfh so empty the dishwasher, clean all the surfaces and sweep the floor, check the bins during a break, in daylight hours as that is my preference. The hob is an induction one so is done daily whether it has been used or not. DH may do it at the weekend but it doesn’t bother me as there are other jobs only he does like hoovering weekly.

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

I do if there's food on them

HangingOver · 18/02/2024 12:24

My version - returning kitchen to pre-cooking state e.g dishes washed, surfaces clean, things out away

DPs - food left out, two or three things not washed, sides dirty, plug hole full of crap.

asdunno · 18/02/2024 12:25

Dishwasher
Any pots
Wipe sides/table/mats/oven
Rinse sink
