What does "cleaning up after dinner" mean to you?

Pretty much what the title says. This is obviously very light hearted and is a discussion I've had and wanted to gauge others' opinions.

Cleaning up after dinner means:

YABU = putting things in the dishwasher or washing up. That's it.

YANBU = as above but also giving the hob and worktops a quick wipe over and leaving the sink clean (not full of food scraps). So leaving the kitchen clean and put away.

Table cleared and wiped, all washing up in d/w or washed up, food put away, surfaces wiped down.

Crishell · 18/02/2024 18:02

There's no way I'd be able to leave any trace of cooking/dinner overnight for the next day.

I'm in the 'come down on a morning to a clean kitchen' camp. Good for my sanity.

DH puts DD to bed, I sort kitchen. Or vice versa.

MindfullyAmazedHorse · 18/02/2024 18:07

Washing up, wipe round surfaces & hob if used (table if necessary) put away place mats, put away any ingredients used while cooking that are left out.

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

What do you mean? Do you not give it a quick wipe over when you wipe down work surfaces?

spottydinosaur · 18/02/2024 18:12

It includes taking the food debris stuck in the plug hole strainer and throwing in the bin! My DH number does this!

Who wants to face the remains of last nights dinner in the kitchen sink!

Boke!

rainbowbee · 18/02/2024 18:16

Mine (living alone) is wash dishes (no dishwasher!), clean sink, wipe the counter and hob. I might leave a glass to clean up the next day but not dirty dishes.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 18/02/2024 18:18

@OppsUpsSide got it !

' Doing whatever needs to doing to make it look/smell like the dinner never happened. '

kitsuneghost · 18/02/2024 18:21

YABU.
Its clearing the plates and doing the dishes.
Surfaces and hob are done before sitting down to dinner.

ohdamnitjanet · 18/02/2024 18:21

Bits of food in the sink will be the death of me. Or my ds.

WafflingDreamer · 18/02/2024 18:22

I like to do a kitchen clean before I settle down for the evening, good sign to everyone in my house that the kitchen is closed!

I leave the kitchen how I want to find it in the morning so I tidy up, wash up, clean the surfaces, the hob/microwave/splash back, the sink and hoover or wash the floor sometimes both.

RichardsGear · 18/02/2024 18:22

So many people doing things to the floor every evening - sweeping/mopping/hoovering! I just couldn't be arsed.

I outsource to the Roomba but when you’ve got toddlers it’s kinda necessary to clean the floor. Older kids though I’d expect not.

Topseyt123 · 18/02/2024 18:29

Load the plates, bowls and cutlery into the dishwasher. Wash up anything that can't go into it or is too bulky/awkwardly shaped and leave on the drainer (on a rack) to dry. In this house that's usually only a couple of pans or baking trays.

Wipe down all surfaces (and the hob if it has been used and is splashed) and the table. Put the bin out if it is full. Same for the kitchen food waste caddy.

Dishwasher on if it is full, if not full then it will probably go on after breakfast the next morning.

Most importantly of all, finish the job off by having a nice cup of tea. 🤣

Most of it only takes a few minutes to do.

goingtotown · 18/02/2024 18:31

Load the dishwasher, wash & dry the pans. Clean the sink, give the gas hob & microwave a wipe, spray the worktops with anti bacterial spray. Empty the kitchen bin & replace liner. Clear the dining table of condiments & place mats. If needed vac floor.

Maybe you don’t, that doesn’t mean no one does

You do if you don't want to scrub and mark it.

30 seconds a day or a shitty job?

In this house it also means a last hoover and mop of the kitchen floor.

rainbowsparkle28 · 18/02/2024 18:37

Doing dishwasher / dishes
Spray / wipe sides and hob as needed
Sink clean
General tidy up if needed
Any dirty cloths etc in machine

londonmummy1966 · 18/02/2024 18:41

It should be

Decant any left overs into pots/tubs for fridge/freezer and label the latter

Load dishwasher (turn on if full) and wash up anything that doesn't go in it

Quick wipe down of all surfaces needing it (including hob/sink if necessary)
review state of floor and sweep/mop as required

Put dishcloth, tea towel and kitchen towel in laundry pile and replace with clean ones for the morning.

BookSpines · 18/02/2024 18:44

Everything but the hob.

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 18/02/2024 18:45

@TinySaltLick Why is it a colossal waste of time? I don’t understand? It takes seconds.

I absolutely do clean it after every use, so at least 3 times a day.

My induction hob can be wiped over numerous times a day…

Dishwasher filled, splash backs and counters wiped down as well as cupboard fronts because I can be a messy cook and the floor is hoovered. Put away any salt/pepper/condiments, wipe the table and empty the food bin as I hate peelings and any scraps left in the kitchen overnight. Clean the sink, chuck any cloths in the Milton cloths bucket until I’m ready to do a wash.

Paintmybathroom · 18/02/2024 18:53

Put the dishes on the side and close the kitchen door.

It's usually a job for the morning!

Snowsp · 18/02/2024 18:56

More towards b. But depends on how many dishes, day of week (eg doing a big clean the next day) always surfaces though. Then mostly as described but with occasional slack. I think option a all the time is a bit lazy I'd one person always does the other way.

Ah, when mine were younger our very lovely and very greedy late dog hoovered up all crumbs.
