What does "cleaning up after dinner" mean to you?

Pretty much what the title says. This is obviously very light hearted and is a discussion I've had and wanted to gauge others' opinions.

Cleaning up after dinner means:

YABU = putting things in the dishwasher or washing up. That's it.

YANBU = as above but also giving the hob and worktops a quick wipe over and leaving the sink clean (not full of food scraps). So leaving the kitchen clean and put away.

I think it ruins a dinner to do all that work afterwards

Just put the dishes by the sink, preferably with excess food already put in the bin. Later they can go in the dishwasher.

I tend to wipe as I go when cooking but I wont be wiping down the hob or stuff like that. Gets done once a week

JDJT · 18/02/2024 19:02

Oh, wow I'm in the minority! Voted YABU. I guess my only excuse could be, I have a toddler who goes to bed at 6:30, so most evenings are rushed. Doesn't help that my DH isn't very forthcoming with cleaning though. He's the type that will put plates on the kitchen side rather than in the dishwasher, let alone clean the hob etc! I work PT so I don't mind picking up the cleaning, but this is usually the following day!

Ginandjuice57884 · 18/02/2024 19:18

It means leaving it in a clean and tidy state for the next person to use, whatever that involves for your household.

SpongeBob2022 · 18/02/2024 19:20

I'm quite a tidy cook, I think. I have a bowl of washing up to do bits as I go along and also wipe the main counter down before I put the plates out to serve.

After eating I just wash up and clear any obvious spillages. I wouldn't wipe down all surfaces or the gas hob routinely.

Definitely don't sweep, mop or clean sink every day.

I actually really admire people who are disciplined enough to have really clean kitchens. But in the sense that it looks nice. I can't relate to being overly worried that a bit of dried food is a health hazard....its really not IMO.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/02/2024 19:20

Yabu, this isn't an Aibu question. Just ask in chat or housekeeping. How hard is it?!

Tagyoureit · 18/02/2024 10:26

Cleaning up after dinner includes
loading the dishwasher, washing the pans, wiping the dining table, wiping the worktops and stove, quick sweep or hoover, cleaning the sink and emptying the bin if it needs it.

Same. I can't relax until that's all done.

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

Mine is induction and takes less than a minute to wipe down. When it was a gas hob with fiddly bits it was closer to once a month Blush

Zanatdy · 18/02/2024 19:24

I don’t always wipe down all the worktops straight away, I sometimes leave a few plates to soak before loading in the dishwasher. Depends how I’m feeling to be honest. I do tend to be more on top of it when ds is home from Uni and I’m cooking more then and more to clean up so have to be more on top of it

I do. I was taught to do it during cookery lessons at school. It takes seconds and makes the kitchen look clean.

Caswallonthefox · 18/02/2024 19:38

After cooking clean up of hob and sides. Washing up done while cooking.

Happyher · 18/02/2024 19:46

Being single I sometimes do the lot, sometimes I clean the worktops the next morning if I’m tired

I wanted to get a range of opinions to see if I was in the majority (which it seems I am) or if the man I was chatting to was (who only washes the dishes). Thank you everyone for your contributions, I'll be sharing the results!

I don't really go on Chat so didn't realise it had a poll option. I also didn't think I'd get a true range of opinions in Housekeeping as it mainly consists of people who are interested in housekeeping.

Maybe I should also add that while this discussion was taking place I had a parking conflict with a neighbour's visitor while at the same time having a disagreement with my MIL?

Load dishwasher, hand wash pans and knives and put away . Wipe all surfaces, wipe kitchen table, hoover, light candle / wax melt.

always wipe hob as induction, so basically the same as any surface.

Allwelcone · 18/02/2024 20:02

TheDefiant · 18/02/2024 15:16

I load dishwasher and make sure it's on. Hand wash anything that doesn't fit in or isn't dishwasher safe. Clean all surfaces, clean dining table. Put everything away.

Hob is induction so takes seconds to wipe down.

I re- wax all the wooden worktops daily and once a week rebuild the entire kitchen extension.

Rightsraptor · 18/02/2024 20:05

The kitchen should be in a clean state for the prep of the next meal. Anything less isn't clearing up.

MadCatLady27 · 18/02/2024 20:19

Wash up, dry up, spray surfaces with flash bleach spray, clean sink, wipe down hob with flash spray if it needs doing

Currently no children so I wash and DH dries, we alternate who does the sink and who does the surfaces

GymBergerac · 18/02/2024 20:39

In my house it means leaving things looking nice and clean and ready to prepare the next meal. Washing up done, stuff put away, spills cleaned up.

That’s why I clean as I go so by time the food is ready, the only thing that needs to be cleared up are the dishes and silverware that were used and the pot they were cooked in. I rather have it done before bed than have to deal with it all in the morning before making breakfast and getting everyone ready for school.

I'd clean the kitchen as I went along so apart from the actual hob (still too hot and wouldn't wipe after every use anyway unless there was a spill) that would already be wiped/put away.

Clearing after dinner is doing the opposite of laying the table - condiments away, table clear and clean, plates/cutlery scraped and in dishwasher or stacked waiting to go in if it is already on.

Tatonka · 18/02/2024 23:07

giving the hob and worktops a quick wipe over and leaving the sink clean (not full of food scraps). So leaving the kitchen clean and put away only if this is a 5 min job or I wouldn't bother doing this everynight. Bare minimum here

Emily1583 · 18/02/2024 23:08

Chucking all food preparation rubbish away
Washing the dishes + putting them away
Antibac kitchen tops and kitchen sink

mathanxiety · 18/02/2024 23:20

YANBU - basically leaving the kitchen ready to prepare another meal from scratch, without having to move anything or clean a counter. I agree it also means cleaning the hob.

TinySaltLick · 18/02/2024 10:20

A wipe down every day surely? Especially if you have a really rubbish cooker like mine that looks grim already

MixedCouple · 19/02/2024 07:19

I do everything hob, worktops, dinning table, sink etc.
But DH does the dishes. Doesn't even clean the table or any mess left behind. He doesn't even clean the sink after washing up so in the morning it is nasty in there and takes me longer to get breakfast done.
