What does "cleaning up after dinner" mean to you?

Pretty much what the title says. This is obviously very light hearted and is a discussion I've had and wanted to gauge others' opinions.

Cleaning up after dinner means:

YABU = putting things in the dishwasher or washing up. That's it.

YANBU = as above but also giving the hob and worktops a quick wipe over and leaving the sink clean (not full of food scraps). So leaving the kitchen clean and put away.

I don't even load the dishwasher! All I do is clear the dining table. I don't always do that

Ooof you'd never get away with that this time of year here in Aus. You'd wake up to forty thousand ants trying to carry the whole table away.

Petrine · 18/02/2024 12:28

Everything in dishwasher, wipe hob and oven if there's spats on door, wipe worktops and anything else which needs wiping. Tidy up.

HangingOver · 18/02/2024 12:29

I draw the line at drying up though, unless running out of space

mondaytosunday · 18/02/2024 12:34

Plates in dishwasher, pots and pans washed or left to soak, foodstuffs thrown out or put away, quick wipe of counter/hob if needed. Certainly not getting the broom out!
Occasionally I just pile it all in the sink and worry about it in the morning.

YuleDragon · 18/02/2024 12:34

clearing up after dinner is loading the dishwasher, wiping down the sides.

everything else is cleaning the kitchen and doesn't count.

Noone cleans the hobs every day, what a colossal waste of time

Yes they do. If it’s used it’s unhygienic not to?

laziness there I think!

Cuppachuchu · 18/02/2024 12:36

Well, the first example is what DH does, and the second is what I do. But he does the cooking at the weekend, and cleans the bathrooms so I'm not complaining.
Fair division of labour. And we all know they never do as good a job as we do. 😀

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 18/02/2024 13:52

It means restoring the kitchen to the condition it was in before the meal was prepared.

Depending on what you're cooking, it's perfectly possible to for the hob to be used with no signs of it. Most things you're cooking stay in the pot or pan! I'll wipe or clean it if it needs it, but not if its still looking perfectly clean.

I do 🤣

Wash dry and pop away dishes, spray/wipe down worktop and hob, sweep up and mop, if needed, (I have a messy toddler) empty bin and leave the cloths to soak in disinfectant..

TheMainCharacter · 18/02/2024 14:17

For me it’s fully clearing the table, washing up, loading the dishwasher, wiping the sides, hob and table. Washing out the sink, sweeping the floor.

Everyone else puts plates in the dishwasher, washes up and that’s it. So I come in to random cutlery and glasses on the table and crumbs and bits everywhere.

It’s like when I bathed the kids when they were babies/toddlers. Dirty clothes in the basket, nappies in the bin, towels hung up, bath water let out, bath toys squeezed out and left to drain. Compared to going up to the bathroom when I hadn’t done it and clothes, nappies, towels all over the floor, cold water left in the bath with toys still in it. Same job, yet not…

Load the dishwasher, wash anything that doesn’t fit in up, wipe the surfaces and hob (induction hob, not one with lots of bits) and sweep/clean the floor.

You've just triggered a memory of my mum from when I was little. She would always sweep the kitchen floor just before going to bed. She would also always take her handbag into their bedroom, so always swept the floor with her handbag swinging on her shoulder. 😊

But yes, it means washing up/loading dishwasher, cleaning surfaces and hob if needed, washing out tins etc for recycling.

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 18/02/2024 14:38

For us, it means:

Clearing the table
Washing the dishes
Wiping down the sides/hob if needed
Putting dishes away
Putting dirty tea towels etc. in the wash basket
Sweeping the floors

Missamyp · 18/02/2024 15:05

I prefer to remove the dinner plates and cutlery, and then gradually load the dishwasher while tidying up the kitchen. However, for DP, it means eating the food and then restoring the kitchen to its original state before he began cooking.
And yes he does clean the hob top every day and his flat is cleaned daily too.
We don't live together so we don't clash over this.

JMSA · 18/02/2024 15:13

The second option (YANBU).

TheDefiant · 18/02/2024 15:16

I load dishwasher and make sure it's on. Hand wash anything that doesn't fit in or isn't dishwasher safe. Clean all surfaces, clean dining table. Put everything away.

Hob is induction so takes seconds to wipe down.

Wishlist99 · 18/02/2024 15:18

People mop the kitchen floor every day? Mind blown…

I do. Every time it’s used actually.

I do! Completely avoids the need to do any high effort clean. Takes around 20 seconds after each use, bingo!

Dogfisher · 18/02/2024 15:25

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/02/2024 10:21

Loading the dishwasher, wiping the tops down, mopping the floor cleaning the sink etc filling the kettle and putting the mugs out for the morning.

WHAT???

Sgtmajormummy · 18/02/2024 15:27

I’d do anything at night in order to stay in bed 5 minutes longer in the morning so I, too, lay the breakfast table the night before.

Dogfisher · 18/02/2024 15:27

TempleOfBloom · 18/02/2024 10:42

It means putting the cork back in the wine bottle if there is any left, and picking at the still greasy and juicy bits of chicken before it goes in the fridge.

😂

MysteryDog · 18/02/2024 15:29

Clear the table, stack the dishwasher, wipe the surfaces and the hob, sweep the floor if needed. Leftovers in tupperware. Put the recycling out as well if overflowing.

AnneElliott · 18/02/2024 17:57

YANBU op - that's why I do. But I often come down to a kitchen that looks like a bombs hit it. Especially likely if I've gone out for work drinks and therefore H is resentful.
