Something sinister going on about Cocaine in the UK

EasterBun23 · 24/12/2023 21:16

Something sinister is going on.

We all know people on Cocaine, it's very very popular, every time i go in the toilets in my local bars on the weekend there's lads in there doing and dealing it.

Recenly it was reported that the UK is the second most popular country for cocaine..

We are an Island country. (excluding NI).

How the hell is so much getting in our borders? There are sniffer dogs and checks at airports and sea ports. You can very well imagine some is getting in..

But enough to feed a population of 67million? nah

I don't know anyone who does cocaine, ok so I don't have many friends and don't go out much so while I have no doubt it is happening maybe its not as common as you assume.

Same.

VickyEadieofThigh · 24/12/2023 21:21

I've never known anyone who does or has done cocaine.

MikeRafone · 24/12/2023 21:22

I think you are being naive as to how common place Coke use is

nottaotter · 24/12/2023 21:22

Government figures say just over 3% of all adults have taken a class A drug in the last year, that seems low, but I have no idea about other countries.

I think sometimes if you are around a group of people who do something/talk a certain way etc it can skew your perception.

Firebird83 · 24/12/2023 21:23

I also don’t know anyone that does cocaine.

Bridgertonned · 24/12/2023 21:23

If there's a market and money in it, people will find a way. The methods for disguising cocaine can be very clever; people chemically alter it and then reprocess it to recover the drug, then cut it with other ingredients to make it go further. There was a case recently where the drug had been incorporated into a lacquer on broom handles. Sniffer dogs won't pick that up.

ExtraOnions · 24/12/2023 21:24

I don’t know anyone who does Cocaine … I would never be friends with someone who did Cocaine - they are supporting the enslavement and murder of Children and Adults, so they can feel a bit more interesting. Anyone who does Cocaine is morally bankrupt

jgw1 · 24/12/2023 21:24

It may be a generational thing.
It is perfectly possible that those who are younger do not know anyone who does cocaine, because it is much more a habit of those who are middle aged.

Lighrbulbmo · 24/12/2023 21:25

Me either I don’t know anyone and I have never touched it

nottaotter · 24/12/2023 21:25

Young men in bars taking coke is like saying people in a library are likely to choose a book, its a very small slice of the population .

WashItTomorrow · 24/12/2023 21:25

I don’t know anyone who takes cocaine. On the radio the other day they said only 2.5 % of the population has taken cocaine, and about 5% of young people- up to about age 25, I think.

EasterBun23 · 24/12/2023 21:25

VickyEadieofThigh · 24/12/2023 21:21

I've never known anyone who does or has done cocaine.

I bet you probably do know someone.

Gov figures? How does the government get these figures? Did they run a telephone poll and ask if they do drugs? lol

Do you honestly think we're all doing it OP? All the pensioners? All the kids? You're being very silly. I know people who did coke when I was in my 20s and a few who continued into their 30s, but I honestly don't think I know anyone now (although I can imagine there are a few).

time4aNC · 24/12/2023 21:26

It comes through cities with seaports and is mixed with a load a of other stuff to make it go further.

Sniffer dogs aren’t that accurate.

Topofthemountain · 24/12/2023 21:26

OP you have answered your own question. We are an island, there is over 11000 miles of coastline, the vast majority of which is not controlled. It is incredibly easy to get it into the country.

Charlingspont · 24/12/2023 21:26

I don't know anyone that takes or has ever taken cocaine. I think it probably depends on what circles you move in.

My colleague thinks everyone goes skiing once a year, but of course, they don't.

Weddingpuzzle · 24/12/2023 21:27

67 million people won't take it though? How many of them are DC? How many are older people when d never touch it? How many are adults who wouldn't?

67 million is a misleading figure.

GoldenFishes · 24/12/2023 21:27

I don't know, I'm 40 and DH is 49.
Definitely no coke being taken in our circle.
That said we don't know any smokers either and the smoking rate is much higher than the 3% quoted above.

MaryHinges · 24/12/2023 21:27

Once it is smuggled into Europe it is easier to get it to the UK. You have to remember that for every multi million pound haul that gets detected and ends up plastered all over the news, dozens more get through undetected. It's really that simple. Tonnes of the stuff washes up on beaches abandoned by small boats, many more boats land safely and don't abandon thier haul. The amount of migrants who make it ashore without being intercepted by either French or British border control should give you an indication of how poorly protected our beaches are.

Summasolstice · 24/12/2023 21:28

I’d love you to elaborate on the ‘something sinister going on’ bit…..

nottaotter · 24/12/2023 21:28

@ExtraOnions thats quite judgemental, what about someone buying clothes that a badly paid under age worker has made, mica used in make up that a 5 year old has mined, eats meat from a cruelly treated animal.

ChristmasCanFucawfee · 24/12/2023 21:29

But it isn’t enough for 67 million is it? Not every man woman and child in the uk uses it every day?!

The gov estimates I just looked up states about 2% of the adult population used cocaine at least once last year. Some people will use more than once. The vast majority of the population won’t use it at all.

brawnthesheep · 24/12/2023 21:29

It's really common particularly amongst the middle classes who then complain about the associated knife crime 🤔

Forgotmylogindetails · 24/12/2023 21:30

Unless you live under a rock I bet my house on it you know someone that does cocaine.

it’s evil. It’s ruined people in my families lives and people think it’s a cool drug.

i fucking hate it.
