Something sinister going on about Cocaine in the UK

Something sinister is going on.

We all know people on Cocaine, it's very very popular, every time i go in the toilets in my local bars on the weekend there's lads in there doing and dealing it.

Recenly it was reported that the UK is the second most popular country for cocaine..

We are an Island country. (excluding NI).

How the hell is so much getting in our borders? There are sniffer dogs and checks at airports and sea ports. You can very well imagine some is getting in..

But enough to feed a population of 67million? nah

I went to a golf club bar.

100% of the people there owned a set of golf clubs.

Therefore 100% of the 67 million people in the UK own a set of golf clubs.

Native · 24/12/2023 22:11

Sorry, but I do not understand what is NOT sinister about the UK being the second largest consumer of cocaine?🤔

I’ve posted something about this before and everyone commented saying they didn’t know anyone who had taken it. When I was at school (15 years ago) it really wasn’t a thing in the very young people, in my area anyway, may have been with those in nightclubs though, but now it’s everywhere! In every pub in my town there will be people with it in their pocket right now. No one even seems to see it as a big deal! Out of my friends who are male I don’t know anyone who hasn’t 🤦🏻‍♀️ Out of my friends who are female it’s probably close to 50/50 and I have a very decent group of friends I would say. I’m in the 50% who have never taken it. I’m sure it makes you feel great but I’ve just never understood it at all. It terrifies me now I’m a mum, especially to a boy and knowing that it’s even rife among the school aged kids in my area now 😳

When I was at school in the 90s I was aware of some of the kids taking it. 15 year olds with too much money and not enough brain cells.

Generally speaking anyone I've come across on it, is a giant bellend, but they really aren't in my social circle. I couldn't name anyone who takes it.

I think there is a correlation with this for a reason - I don't associate with dickheads.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/12/2023 22:14

AllIsWellish · 24/12/2023 21:40

That's not my experience plenty of 20 somethings doing it

If you go by the significant proportion of MN who declare that all their friends do it (and they're always all headteachers, doctors, barristers and other professionals, never a bug eyed balding bloke who hasn't held down a job since getting fired in 1997 or somebody making a bit of cash on the side by dealing weed to schoolchildren), it stands to reason with the ages in question that their children are now doing exactly the same as Mummy and Daddy did once they were put to bed in the early 2000s.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 24/12/2023 22:15

I'm 50 and have never seen anyone using cocaine or been offered it myself. I've seen weed, ecstasy and speed being taken, but not since I was in my 20s - I don't get out much nowadays.

PlantsFallLikeDominoes · 24/12/2023 22:15

I'm really worried about my ds and cocaine. He's 16 and wants a trade apprenticeship. I know how rife it is with scaffolders/brickies etc and it really worries me he'll just go along with the beer and bag culture.

SemperIdem · 24/12/2023 22:17

I know people who use cocaine, I don’t personally.

It’s massively commonly used, more so than cannabis (which I also don’t use).

eurochick · 24/12/2023 22:19

I'm late 40s and in my teens in the 90s I was aware of a few muso types who would take anything offered to them. Then I went away to uni where it was all cheap beer and the odd bit of weed floating around. When I came back home and went to the pub with my old schoolmates who hadn't moved away a load of them were taking it just to go for a few drinks on a Friday night. I was surprised. It was not my thing and was one of the signs that we had moved in different directions since we left school.

byteme1011 · 24/12/2023 22:20

I was t my work christmas party a couple of weeks ago (I don't really go to clubs/pubs/not much of a nightlife person) and found out a couple of days later that most people were on coke that night and I literally had no idea. Apparently the only reason I wasn't offered any is because I work with mainly guys (only 2 females in the company) and it was all done in the toilet - my point here is I'm shocked how widespread usage is
It's not my jam, I don't drink either and tried it when I was younger. Off topic but I always find it a bit off when folk will take anti depressants or suffer from poor mental health more generally and drink regularly (obviously I understand addiction issues but these are not addicts just social drinkers who drink to fit in).

Titsywoo · 24/12/2023 22:20

I didn't think I knew anyone who did cocaine until the year me and my friends all turned 40 and I realised a load of them have done it or do it every now and then/regularly. I never knew! Clearly I'm naive!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/12/2023 22:20

jgw1 · 24/12/2023 21:24

It may be a generational thing.
It is perfectly possible that those who are younger do not know anyone who does cocaine, because it is much more a habit of those who are middle aged.

Yeah,that's true.

Titsywoo · 24/12/2023 22:21

Sorry the turned 40 thing was because there were a lot of parties in a short space of time and it started coming up as a thing

TooOldForThisNonsense · 24/12/2023 22:21

I’m sure it is rife in some circles but personally I don’t hang round druggies.

in terms of access to the UK we have a massive coastline so I imagine it must be fairly easy to land it?

LondonQueen · 24/12/2023 22:21

I know a lot of middle class people who do it at my age (late 20's), it's surely higher than 3% of the population. I'd love to know how they attained that figure.

Hoglet70 · 24/12/2023 22:23

It's rife where I live. I'd love to know how they all afford it. We had to make do with speed when I was a teenager!!!

Nitgel · 24/12/2023 22:25

Middle aged boozers use coke. Wide boys down the golf club.

Solymoly · 24/12/2023 22:27

I didn't know any women who did though there must've been some, just men

KingsleyBorder · 24/12/2023 22:28

EasterBun23 · 24/12/2023 21:51

I'm sorry but many here are naive,

Some of you will have partners who have done/doing it.

In the pub with the lads etc
At the football
When golfing etc.

The only person I know who does any of these activities is my 80 year old FIL. Hold on, just let me ask him as we’re at the in-laws for Christmas.

Yeah, they’re all at it.

(Oh, wait..)

HardcoreLadyType · 24/12/2023 22:30

There is a butcher local to us which is (apparently) a front for drug dealing. It’s that sort of “artisan” butcher where it’s £4 for a sausage. It shuts from time to time for a while, while the owner is in prison. During this down time it has been a sort of posh charity shop and is currently a Christmas pop up shop.

I don’t know if you can walk in and ask for some cocaine with your pork chops, though, or if it’s more to do with shipping larger quantities.

nationallampoons · 24/12/2023 22:33

@EasterBun23 no he was my partner of 20 years. Went down a dodgy path unfortunately and I wasn't prepared to live like that

It is what it is and now I'm with someone decent and law abiding

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 24/12/2023 22:40

It's not unbelievable to think that many people on here don't know how many people take coke at the weekends as most people on MN rarely leave the house and hate being asked to go on nights out, etc.

Meanwhile in RL, those of us who are out most weekends see what goes on in the toilets, the groups of lads popping out of the pubs every 10 minutes, the conversations going on in the bars... yes, cocaine is unfortunately rife these days.

RampantIvy · 24/12/2023 22:43

GoldenFishes · 24/12/2023 21:47

This is a odd thread.
Some people move in circles where cocaine use is normal and common.
Some people move in circles where nobody would touch drugs.
Neither one is necessarily more right than another.
It's interesting that those who don't know anyone who does it accept that there are people that do but that they don't know them. Whereas the people who do know lots of people who do are trying to insist the first group are wrong and they do know people who do they are just unaware.

Well said @GoldenFishes
I don't move in circles where people take coke nor do I know anyone who takes it. Weed yes, coke no.

I'm staid and boring, and so are my friends.

StarDolphins · 24/12/2023 22:43

Those quoting stats like they’re totally the truth🤣
’reported’ taking coke is a whole lot different to taking it & saying nothing, which most do.

I know a lot of people that have done it for years & still do. I also have lots of friends that did it recreationally when in their 20’s/30’s & no longer do it. I also know people who have never done it.

Most people don’t admit it.

It isn't fuelling a population of 67 million people. How many kids do you think have taken it? Some teens will have taken it but not most. Like pp here I don't know anyone who does it or if they have would ever be open about it. If you're surrounded by people and you're all open about your coke use, that's about you and your mates, not the majority of the population

AnotherAdventFridge · 24/12/2023 22:47

Cocaine use is part of leveling up, you need to contact the relevant minister
