Something sinister going on about Cocaine in the UK

Something sinister is going on.

We all know people on Cocaine, it's very very popular, every time i go in the toilets in my local bars on the weekend there's lads in there doing and dealing it.

Recenly it was reported that the UK is the second most popular country for cocaine..

We are an Island country. (excluding NI).

How the hell is so much getting in our borders? There are sniffer dogs and checks at airports and sea ports. You can very well imagine some is getting in..

But enough to feed a population of 67million? nah

I did it once, over 20 years ago. Was nice but I had and have no desire to repeat the experience. I was young and silly and led astray by a reprehensible flatmate. Since her I’ve never known anyone who does it. I’m sure I do know people who do, but nobody’s ever told me. I very much doubt all 67 million Brits are snorting it.

Exactly, all those 3 yos doing lines in the nursery toilet!

SouthEastCoast · 24/12/2023 22:51

I’m more concerned with how much of it gets into the prisons, also mobile phones and weapons . It can really only be the guards or police so guess it’s corruption which seems likely for the rest of the country too.

It may be a generational thing.
It is perfectly possible that those who are younger do not know anyone who does cocaine, because it is much more a habit of those who are middle aged.

In my experience it is more the younger generation who use coke. I am in my 40s and know one person who used/ uses coke. They give up regularly and then start taking it again.

I do know two young people in my family who developed coke problems after working overnight in a physical job where it was really common for people to take coke during the shift to perk themselves up.

One developed a serious drug addiction and ended up in prison for assaults when they were on drugs. Thankfully they are now three years clean, rebuilding their life, got a job and helping other addicts.

Rosecoffeecup · 24/12/2023 22:53

People saying they don't know anyone who has ever taken it - how would you even know?!

Zebedee999 · 24/12/2023 22:56

ExtraOnions · 24/12/2023 21:24

I don’t know anyone who does Cocaine … I would never be friends with someone who did Cocaine - they are supporting the enslavement and murder of Children and Adults, so they can feel a bit more interesting. Anyone who does Cocaine is morally bankrupt

Spot on I'm the same. Have known a few distant relatives that have used but have minimal contact with them.
When I read drug users' posts on forums they are often proud of the fact and reckon everyone is on it or I MUST know someone doing it. I can never understand why they are happy to support criminal gangs and cause the inevitable innocent victims who get killed from time to time such as that young girl shot in Liverpool earlier this year. Why are they happy to let those deaths happen so they can have their illegal drugs?

SparklyMularky · 24/12/2023 22:56

As someone who doesn't take drugs but mixes with people who do, I strongly believe that people do know someone who has done/does coke but they do not realise because it is by nature, a secretive event.

DP has been known to indulge and when he has, I am sometimes asked and sometimes not - not by him as he knows but by the person who has it. Sometimes I have no idea it's been done until after (this is the norm with people who know us well) and I know when I say no, people who don't know me well then ask him if it's ok for him/di they need to keep it a secret from me etc etc.

I have also been on work nights out and girls who look like they are sweet girls go mad for it. I was a few nights in before I had any idea.

It is everywhere which is why it should be legalised and regulated and our kids educated.

Dweetfidilove · 24/12/2023 22:59

They won’t new to supply 67 million, because I won’t be buying it and unless my friends and family are doing it secretly, I know no one who uses cocaine.

I'm sorry but many here are naive,

Some of you will have partners who have done/doing it.

In the pub with the lads etc
At the football
When golfing etc.

You realise not everyone plays golf/goes to the pub/ has nights out with "the lads" though?

I mean if DH started doing any of those things I'd assume he'd been in some sort of body swap.

RampantIvy · 24/12/2023 23:00

I have no doubt that coke using is rife in the bars in town, but I don't drink in the bars in town. I also know at least one if not all the pubs in the market town near me has coke users, but I don't drink in them and don't know the users, so it is fair to say that I don't personally know anyone who takes it. It just isn't common in my circle - friends and family. I can't say the same about weed though.

GoldenFishes · 24/12/2023 21:19

I don't know anyone who does cocaine, ok so I don't have many friends and don't go out much so while I have no doubt it is happening maybe its not as common as you assume.

same ^ and i’ve never been offered drugs anywhere 🤷‍♀️

You are making absolute wide assumptions about a lot of people

Ap24 · 24/12/2023 23:04

I don't know how people afford it regularly! And the cost of drinking in pubs and bars on top of that.

Oblomov23 · 24/12/2023 23:10

The naivety on this thread is shocking. How many % of population had ever trued anything, back in the day in uni, might be higher than 2.5% or 5%.

PaprikaPlease · 24/12/2023 23:12

Never saw it anywhere until moving to London. Then it was everywhere and I was offered it every weekend at every party.

Ethical issues aside, I could never get my stingy little head around paying £45 for white powder. That’s a hot stone massage or a really nice lippy!

Anyone else find drug taking really strange? It’s

Unwisebutnotillegal · 24/12/2023 23:17

i guess it depends where you live. I live on a street where the average age is 80 and the addiction is tea and indoor bowling.
I don’t think many of my friends would do it either our event of this year was going pottery painting which it has to be said is probably more expensive than Coke! Honestly Mumsnet is like a different world to where I live!

amberisola · 24/12/2023 23:17

I was in London for a while recently and I got the impression that the whole place is swimming in it, at least for people in their 30s working in certain high pressure, well-paid industries... I realise this won't be anything new, but it just seemed to be suddenly everywhere and so normalised.

Not something I ever noticed before, even when I was young and out partying nonstop I encountered it rarely (and thought it was wankerish and pointless even then!)

Gingerkittykat · 24/12/2023 23:21

HardcoreLadyType · 24/12/2023 22:30

There is a butcher local to us which is (apparently) a front for drug dealing. It’s that sort of “artisan” butcher where it’s £4 for a sausage. It shuts from time to time for a while, while the owner is in prison. During this down time it has been a sort of posh charity shop and is currently a Christmas pop up shop.

I don’t know if you can walk in and ask for some cocaine with your pork chops, though, or if it’s more to do with shipping larger quantities.

It sounds like it is most likely a money laundering operation and they won't sell drugs from the premises.

They will put the dirty drug money through the till, declare business expenses and pay tax on it which allows them to do things like buy cars and houses.

WhamBamThankU · 24/12/2023 23:24

I know a group of old friends who are in their 40s who do coke, but nobody my age or younger.

Summasolstice · 24/12/2023 23:26

Legalise drugs, regulate them, make it as safe as can be. Cocaine is way less dangerous than alcohol according to the governments drugs czar

User75325426 · 24/12/2023 23:32

To be blunt, it could also be a class thing. MN is notoriously split into groups that are very proud of being working/middle class. People who dare admit to being upper middle or upper class get bashed into the ground. That's basically the core democratic for coke use.

Amongst groups of high-earning, middle aged men who go on lads holidays or big nights out, the cocaine use is close to 100%, if you define it as having tried at least once. The vast majority are not regular users but would partake at events if the opportunity arises. One in every 20 or 30 men inside that specific demographic are regular users (possibly addicts) that those are the ones who have contacts with dealers and can procure it for social events. The remaining ones would happily take a line when offered for free, which is often the case.

I would also dare to say that most of you do know someone who takes coke and it's your doctor or dentist. Architects, lawyers, bankers & consultants also all fit into that group as well. Privately, all of those men have a lot of disposable income, a wide social circle and exhausting jobs that leave little energy to stay awake during nights out.

Bearpawk · 24/12/2023 23:33

Well I doubt it all comes through customs/ ports op. We have a lot of coastline. Most of it comes via boat.

I know that my friends don't do coke. We talk about it. I know it happens in the pubs and bars in town, but it isn't something we do. That isn't being naive.

I think it says something about someone if they don't believe that a significant number of us have never tried coke.

pinkfondu · 24/12/2023 23:37

Erm really don't think 67 million are doing it..
