Wicked is the worst musical theatre EVER

Just returned for taking my 13 and 15 year olds to see Wicked at the Apollo in London.

OMG this is the worst show I have ever seen!

The storyline is weak, the singing is screechy and the songs forgettable. Kids hated it too.

We had great seats which cost me +£300, but sooo wish we had left during the interval. I didn't because I think it is rude to the actors but you couldn't pay me to sit through this again.

We go to the theatre a lot and have seen many musicals and straight drama productions. But I wouldn't recommend this show to my worst enemy.

AIBU Wicked the musical is an abomination?

YANBU

MissHoollie · 23/12/2023 23:31

Hated it

BabyYoshke · 23/12/2023 23:32

I loved it. But I don’t get to see many shows so the whole experience was exciting.

Decibell · 23/12/2023 23:32

YABVVU, I absolutely love it

Candleabra · 23/12/2023 23:32

Completely agree. I don’t understand the love for it at all.

Coronado2 · 23/12/2023 23:32

YABU

Precipice · 23/12/2023 23:33

I didn't like it, but I think there are worse things out there. Out of the two, I'd personally rather sit through Wicked again than the Lion King again.

LeggyLegsEleven · 23/12/2023 23:33

YANBU we walked out in the intermission. We’ve seen a lot of musicals over the years. Tripe.

Thank you, it was so bad it was embarrassing

I wasn’t enamoured with it either, but my daughter loved it!

ForensicFlossy · 23/12/2023 23:34

I loved Wicked, thought the story was clever running parallel to the Wizard of Oz.

FitAt50 · 23/12/2023 23:34

It's one of the most successful musicals ever and is being made into a huge movie. I loved it.

YouBetYourBippy · 23/12/2023 23:34

We left Sunset Boulevard with Nicole Sherzinger in the interval tonight. Absolutely dreadful production. Maybe there's something in the air tonight 😂The tickets cost £600 for the 4 of us but I honestly couldn't sit there a minute longer! I actually quite liked Wicked but think it is very Elphaba-casting dependent.

Thedogscollar · 23/12/2023 23:34

@imsofancy Me too.
Saw it years ago visually good but storyline and songs absolutely dire. I'm astounded it's ran for so long.

TheChosenTwo · 23/12/2023 23:35

We hated it too and I so rarely meet anyone who feels the same!
We walked out during the interval and went to the nearest pub in shell shocked silence 😂
Horrific, amateurish, I’ve watched more enjoyable and talented shows at my junior school!
I’m only thankful that our friends got us free tickets through their work, we went as a 4 and left as a 4, none of us could quite believe what we had seen!

TheChosenTwo · 23/12/2023 23:36

Mind you I saw moulin rouge recently and that was terrible too, but I’d gone with a friend who was quite enjoying it so we stayed. I thought it was shit.

PastorCarrBonarra · 23/12/2023 23:36

I loved the Wizard of Oz film but was disappointed with Wicked. I saw it about eight years ago I think. I couldn’t recall a single song the next day. It wasn’t “bad” ….just a bit boring.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 23/12/2023 23:37

Absolutely hated it - for all the reasons you said. I went with a big family group who all thought it was great. Apart from my daughter and me that is. We said things like ‘great costumes’, ‘good set’, and then, when we were on our own, admitted that we thought it was dire and that was a couple of hours we were never getting back.
I was also taken aback by the cinema-like concessions selling food and drink which people munched and slurped throughout the show. I love the theatre but recommend giving Wicked a miss.

Grendell · 23/12/2023 23:38

I will never know, because I walked out of "Cats" 23 years ago and haven't darkened the door of a musical since then.

pinkstinks · 23/12/2023 23:39

The books are so much better

anyone else hate Book of Mormon? I know it’s supposed to be edgy but looking around the theatre at who was there and what they were laughing at I couldn’t stop cringing

SweetDreamsAreMadeOf · 23/12/2023 23:39

YANBU.
I've lived in London 20+ years, love the theatre and go at least a couple of times a month - I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly...And this was hands down the worst I've ever seen!

...And I say that as someone for whom The Wizard of Oz was one of my favourite childhood films. Such a shame!

Horriblewoman · 23/12/2023 23:40

Yep I agree! I adore musicals and would and have seen some multiple times but have no interest in ever seeing wicked again.

Thedogscollar · 23/12/2023 23:41

Never mind Defying Gravity it defies belief that it's still in the West End.
BTW this is the only recognisable song in the whole production..

KrisAkabusi · 23/12/2023 23:41

What happens shows that people don't like? They close. Wicked has been running for years, so clearly you're in a minority.

AllAroundMyCat · 23/12/2023 23:41

I haven't been to a musical since Les Mis over thirty years ago.
God it was all shouty vowels.
