Wicked is the worst musical theatre EVER

Just returned for taking my 13 and 15 year olds to see Wicked at the Apollo in London.

OMG this is the worst show I have ever seen!

The storyline is weak, the singing is screechy and the songs forgettable. Kids hated it too.

We had great seats which cost me +£300, but sooo wish we had left during the interval. I didn't because I think it is rude to the actors but you couldn't pay me to sit through this again.

We go to the theatre a lot and have seen many musicals and straight drama productions. But I wouldn't recommend this show to my worst enemy.

AIBU Wicked the musical is an abomination?

I’ve seen it twice. Absolute rubbish both times.

Just do NOT go and see 'We will Rock you'
It makes Wicked look good.
I go to all the musicals..we are huge fans. JCSS is my personal favoutite, but love Cabaret, Blood Brothers, Evita, SIX etc.

We will Rock You is SOOOOOO bad. Went to see it as a friend is in the cast, and even he said it's probably better to be in it than watching it!!!

Totally agree with this! I'm not a fan of musicals at the best of times but about ten years ago a friend persuaded me to see We Will Rock You. I hated every minute of it, rubbish story and most of the middle aged( as I was) audience standing up dancing and singing along, I sat in my seat and cringed through the whole thing. It would have been better to watch a Queen tribute act. Friend absolutely loved it which led to me reassessing my friendship with her which ultimately I ended for that and other reasons.

FuckYouEzekiel · 24/12/2023 00:42

Agree ErmWhatever We just got back from Frozen and thought it was like an embarrassing panto. But I wouldn't dream of saying it outloud as everyone adores it.

MrsFezziwig · 24/12/2023 00:44

I’m a massive musical theatre fan but something has always held me back from wanting to see Wicked. Nothing on this thread to make me change my mind.
I generally prefer more traditional musicals but really enjoyed Operation Mincemeat and Come from Away (I’m obviously using the term “musical” fairly broadly here).

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 24/12/2023 00:45

I hated it the first time I saw it, I think because I went with my husband who was radiating irritation and annoyance throughout the performance and his negativity was contagious. Went several years later with young teens and really enjoyed it.

Popcorn23 · 24/12/2023 00:48

I saw it a long time ago and remember thinking it was weird. Wasn't there a song about eating with a goat...?

The book version is marginally better but overall I don't see the appeal.

tawitttawoo · 24/12/2023 00:49

YABU!

I've seen it 4 times in 12 years and have loved it each time. I've not seen it in the past few years, so perhaps it's the cast that makes or breaks it? It been running in London for nearly 20 years and has been one of the most successful musicals ever, so tens of millions of people would also disagree with you. I'm also not sure how some people find the story line hard to follow. It's really not Confused

I've also seen Phantom 3 times and Les Mis 3 times. I adore them both as well. On the other hand I HATED Six and Hamilton.

Filler44 · 24/12/2023 00:52

Saw Tell me on a Sunday a couple of years ago at our local Theatre.
After 20 mins I had enough and couldn't wait for the interval to leave.
Didn't realise it was a one act show so sat till the end, if I had done prep beforehand would have feigned an issue.
Absolute garbage

This is good to know! I loved Les Mis, it will always be my favourite! Not Interested in Hamilton, but really want to see six!
&Juliet was amazing!

3luckystars · 24/12/2023 00:55

I know I would hate this too.

I love musicals but cannot get Hamilton at all either. Not for me!

brawnthesheep · 24/12/2023 00:56

Saw it 16 years ago & loved it. Have always wanted to go back but now i’m not sure!

We left Sunset Boulevard with Nicole Sherzinger in the interval tonight. Absolutely dreadful production. Maybe there's something in the air tonight 😂The tickets cost £600 for the 4 of us but I honestly couldn't sit there a minute longer! I actually quite liked Wicked but think it is very Elphaba-casting dependent.

My dd and i adored that production although we saw rachel tucker not NS. Its amazing Dd and i were talking again to today about how much we would like to see it again
. I think you are in the minority as there were 3 standing ovations the night we saw it. I suspect Jamie Lloyd can be a bit marmite

I saw Wicked the week it opened in London and loved it . Its a musical that doesnt take itself. seriously. My dc have seen it severaly times and have said it really depends on the cast on how much thry enjoyed .

Oh I saw that in London years ago when Denise Van Outen was doing it. Until that point I hadn't seen a bad Andrew Lloyd Webber production but this was honestly one of the worst three hour periods of my life. She kept singing about capped teeth and Caesar salad. I thought it would never end.

Crepid · 24/12/2023 01:02

YABU.

Worst musical I’ve been to was Fame.

Lampzade · 24/12/2023 01:04

I hated it too. In fact I fell asleep during the show.
Totally overrated

Wicked is my favourite musical ever. My kids and I adore the soundtrack.

On the other hand we all detested Hamilton. It seems like blasphemy to say you don’t like that show but we were desperate to leave at half time. The ultimate emperor’s new clothes! Awful dirge-like music, deathly dull storyline and no set changes/ costume changes. Total crock. Shame as I really enjoyed In The Heights, by the same creator

This! In spades! Everyone I know said how amazing Hamilton was and I was so excited to spend a cheeky flexi afternoon to go see it.

Goodness me it was awful!

Elphamouche · 24/12/2023 01:07

Work in theatre. Love the music, love the costumes. Cannot stand the show.

See, I loved Hamilton.
The worst show was Grease which ended its run about two months ago.
Absolutely terrible. It was amateurish and definitely not West End worthy

Throughabushbackwards · 24/12/2023 01:09

YANBU. It's absolute nonsense.

Lampzade · 24/12/2023 01:12

XelaM · 24/12/2023 00:12

I thought Wicked wasn't good, but the worst musical on the West End BY FAR is Grease (and I have seen a great many Grease productions including high school productions but have never ever seen anything this bad)! It was indescribably terrible and they changed the whole plot making it totally pointless and it didn't even have the car scene (and Sandy was dark-haired and very bitchy)!!!!

Edited

Yep.
Just posted about how terrible Grease was before I even saw your post.
I paid nearly £500 for three tickets. We left during the interval

Frances0911 · 24/12/2023 01:16

I took my elderly parents as a treat. The singing was shouty, for want of a better word, though it didn't help that we were sat next to the speakers. We did leave in the interval. When I told my sister she was in disbelief that we didn't like it, as she thought it was brilliant. We are like chalk and cheese though.

Inthebitterend · 24/12/2023 01:16

I wasn't a big fan of Wicked. Defying Gravity is a great song but the rest is quite meh to me. I found it hard to understand what Glinda was even singing when I first saw it. It made more sense when I listened to the official soundtrack but I was still not fussed about it. I'm glad I got to see it for free.

My faves are Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Les Mis and Cabaret. I saw Cabaret recently in London and it was spectacular. Like, heart stoppingly wonderful. I 100% recommend it if you can go. I won the TodayTix lottery and only paid £25 for a £300 seat!!

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 24/12/2023 01:24

We loved Wicked when we saw it. But it was 10+ years ago so the cast will have changed.

Worst musical I've seen live is Charlie and the chocolate factory. Totally crap.

Cinderella (which I totally didn't watchband on you tube) was weird. I love the songs as stand alone bits of music. But the show looked so odd. At one point it looked like the audience rotated around the stage.

Procrastination4 · 24/12/2023 01:25

BoPeepsSheep · 24/12/2023 00:23

It’s impossible to follow the storyline

I thought the storyline was really clever! (And I really liked Wicked when I saw it a few years ago. I am going to see it again in 2024 -hope I won’t be disappointed!)

adriftinadenofvipers · 24/12/2023 01:26

We went a number of years ago and loved it. Not sure what you expected...
