Wicked is the worst musical theatre EVER

Just returned for taking my 13 and 15 year olds to see Wicked at the Apollo in London.

OMG this is the worst show I have ever seen!

The storyline is weak, the singing is screechy and the songs forgettable. Kids hated it too.

We had great seats which cost me +£300, but sooo wish we had left during the interval. I didn't because I think it is rude to the actors but you couldn't pay me to sit through this again.

We go to the theatre a lot and have seen many musicals and straight drama productions. But I wouldn't recommend this show to my worst enemy.

AIBU Wicked the musical is an abomination?

Love it.

Been several times over the years. Took DD for the first time last week. She loved it too.

That it continues to sell after 17 years suggests that others don't share your view.

Vespanest · 24/12/2023 00:13

I’ve seen it twice, the first time had a really good comedic element to it and two great leading women. The second time the voices were not on the same level and the acting was poor. The west end needs to stick with great musical theatre stars rather than names who would never pass the audition stage as they either don’t have the musical chops or can’t act.

Anon9898 · 24/12/2023 00:13

I love wicked. My favourite all time musical is sister act. Its not even based on the film it's just an 1hr and a half of escapism .

I also loved avenue q was hilarious

JustJoinedRightNow · 24/12/2023 00:14

YABVVVU I love Wicked! I've seen it three times. I just don't see what you're describing at all.

Closerandcloser · 24/12/2023 00:14

I saw Phantom of the Opera in London years ago and hated that. Grim miserable sets, the same song/ tune throughout, no one notable in the cast, and I’m sure there were two Christine’s at one point. All in all a poor production that night

And to add insult to injury, I took the advice of the Cab Driver who took me there, and didn’t wait in the queue of taxis at the end of the production, but started walking in the direction he said, it supposedly being easier to pick up a taxi that way

But there were no taxis, or people. Only cars on busy roads, no shops or houses

It was through sheer luck that a taxi dropped some people at their home, and I hurriedly stepped over, and asked if he could take me

It was a wonder I wasn’t murdered that night, I was completely alone in a deserted area

Goldenboysmum · 24/12/2023 00:15

For years I thought I was the only person who hated it, everyone I've spoke to thought it was great.

So glad it's not just me.

When I saw it I absolutely loved it. All of the main actors were good but the one playing Elphaba had a phenomenal voice. It was over 6 years ago so it’s probably a completely different cast but I would be surprised if the show was massively different.

Same here! Me and DH saw it for a valentine's treat. Loved it!
Went again a couple of years later (DS had acquired tickets through work) and didn't really enjoy it that much.
It's still DH's favourite musical! 😂

TeenLifeMum · 24/12/2023 00:18

I like it. Not my favourite but enjoyable. Not sure what you’d hate if you generally like musical theatre. Defying gravity is pretty memorable.

I really disliked moulin rouge. Beautiful costumes etc but not my style at all. I wasn’t a fan of the film but a friend wanted to go and we got bargain tickets. It was still fun because of who we were with in our group. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s bad, just that it wasn’t your thing.

I've not seen it but my teenage daughter saw it in Edinburgh this week, she loved it.

TeenLifeMum · 24/12/2023 00:23

Just read more replies. How wealthy are people that they would someone spend £600 and leave half way through?

BoPeepsSheep · 24/12/2023 00:23

It’s impossible to follow the storyline

IHateLegDay · 24/12/2023 00:24

I saw it on Broadway almost 17 years ago and absolutely adored it.
I grew up in theatres and it's a huge part of my life. There are only a small handful of shows I've genuinely hated.

Vespanest · 24/12/2023 00:24

What I can’t get my head around is how they are going to make two movies, I adore Cynthia Erivo (saw her in sister act) but two movies.

teenagetantrums · 24/12/2023 00:25

I was going to book tickets for bristol to see wicked, but my friend who has seen everything and loves tbeatre told me not to bother, reading this thread I'm.glad l didn't book.

Gingerbee · 24/12/2023 00:26

Thought it was awful. DH feel asleep.

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 24/12/2023 00:27

I saw Cats in the early 90s, thought it was boring with no storyline. People were talking about how great it was!

When I saw Mama Mia on stage about 20 years ago, thought the story was a bit rubbish although I love Abba. Same with the Rod Stewart one, Tonight's the night.

Needhelpsupport · 24/12/2023 00:30

Wicked is the only west end show ever ,that I yawned through!

The books are so much better

anyone else hate Book of Mormon? I know it’s supposed to be edgy but looking around the theatre at who was there and what they were laughing at I couldn’t stop cringing

Yes! I know it's trendy to say you loved Book of Mormon but I just didn't get it and spent most of the time cringing. I'm not religious and not easily offended...it just wasn't that funny 🤷🏻‍♀️

Superduper02 · 24/12/2023 00:30

YABU! Seen it 3 times. Best show ever. Probably just losing it's way / attraction of talent after many many years of excellent quality.

twilightermummy · 24/12/2023 00:33

YANBU.

I love the Wizard of Oz and we paid good money for some of the best seats but my God, it was diabolical.

I was more disappointed for my mum and her husband who never get to go to the theatre so this was such a treat for them. I felt awful and bad for suggesting it. The kids in the party didn't enjoy it either.

Flimpychunk · 24/12/2023 00:35

I really enjoyed it! Loved the songs, plot and thought it was done well. Different strokes I guess

Babla · 24/12/2023 00:39

YANBU I didn't like it either

ErmWhatever · 24/12/2023 00:40

I find the big shows never live up to the hype. Especially 10/20 years after. Expectations are set too high

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/12/2023 00:40

Saw it 10 years ago and it was brilliant. 🤷‍♀️

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 24/12/2023 00:42

Taken my daughter to see it twice - we both enjoyed it, mind you the 2nd time was 9 years ago.

Don't like CATS.

Thought Six was a total waste of time, and so short !

Phantom I didn't enjoy at all.

Les Mis is my favourite !
