Wicked is the worst musical theatre EVER

Just returned for taking my 13 and 15 year olds to see Wicked at the Apollo in London.

OMG this is the worst show I have ever seen!

The storyline is weak, the singing is screechy and the songs forgettable. Kids hated it too.

We had great seats which cost me +£300, but sooo wish we had left during the interval. I didn't because I think it is rude to the actors but you couldn't pay me to sit through this again.

We go to the theatre a lot and have seen many musicals and straight drama productions. But I wouldn't recommend this show to my worst enemy.

AIBU Wicked the musical is an abomination?

I loved Hamilton. However, it is advisable to do a bit of research before watching the show or you just end up feeling confused.
Listen to the songs on YouTube. Really does make a difference

Oh definitely! I'd watched the recorded version on Disney+ loads of times so knew the story. Some of the people I went with thought it was shit but didn't know what it was about.

Mind you, you could argue that you should be able to go in not knowing and still enjoy it.

@cardibach do you find deals or just sit at the back for the cheap tickets? Where can I find the deals?

ShockShock Amazing! Thanks!

I suspect Americans seeing Hamilton know the history in the way non Americans wouldnt, which is why UK audiences may need to read up first.

YABU wicked is an amazing show

Both! I’m a cheap seats fan - much of the choreography is better seen from above. My Hamilton were first row Circle though. Mostly I seek out early booking links - lots of places like to say ‘tickets from…’ a low price and you can pick those up IF you are quick. That’s how I got both Hamilton and Cabaret (again, balcony but pretty much perfect view) which are my biggest bargains.

If you prepare to wait until the day you can get Rush tickets on Today Tix or enter the lotteries for the following week also on Today Tix. I have had front row tickets for Hamilton through the lottery for £10 for the following week.
I got £200 ticket for £15 for Sunset Boulevard through work because NS does not perform on Mondays but Rachel Tucker is amazing and it does her a disservice to think of her as second best.
My DD also gets cheap tickets through Blue Light and another NHS website Tickets for Good. We saw The Little Big Things last ,month for £5 and its a really great uplifting show.

Frabbits · 24/12/2023 17:57

Not seen Cats or Chess then? Both of those are far worse.

Boomer55 · 24/12/2023 18:25

No, it’s being slated everywhere - justifiably.

indiras · 24/12/2023 19:04

Not ‘the mainstream masses’ shudder. How awful. No wonder you avoid musical theatre, they let just anyone in.

😀☺️

Chess is excellent.

Goodluckanddontfitup · 24/12/2023 19:32

Matter of taste I guess, I loved it

Sorry, that's just my opinion on musicals as a whole. I've yet to see anything, from a wide range, at all to change my mind. I don't mind some opera, oddly enough.

Not intended to be snobbish, so sorry if it came across that way. They attract mainstream masses. There's more problems with the musicals genre and antisocial behaviour at the theatre, than any other. Just check out the threads here.

What are mainstream masses? And why are they bad?
Have you seen Parade? Pacific Overtures? The Light in the Piazza? Dogfight?
Most of the antisocial behaviour is at jukebox musicals -so people who think they’re at a gig. Not the ‘musicals crowd’ at all. Most musical theatre lovers would never go to one.

There should be no screeching in wicked, and there is some lovely songs, for good and thank goodness (couldn’t be happier), the second one when done right gives the understanding to Glinda

That was beautiful.
Unfortunately for us the singers last night sounded NOTHING LIKE THIS 😭

It's one of the best things you'll see. Have seen it twice on this tour and when it was on originally at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre.

I didn't enjoy it, but you've clearly never seen Titanic the musical.

Lord, that’s a terrible musical. There was a moment in the production I saw where the audience BECAME the iceberg.

Mimilamore · 24/12/2023 21:28

Awful show... couldn't wait to flee the theatre

Loveandloveandlove · 24/12/2023 22:31

Loved the music but the storyline is dull. I agree. Probably the worst I have seen.

Zwellers · 24/12/2023 23:26

Def a matter of taste. Wicked I thought was OK. Starlight express I went to see in London in the mid 90s, and it put me off the theatre for years. Biggest pile of rubbish and a complete waste of money. We walked out.

The books are so much better

anyone else hate Book of Mormon? I know it’s supposed to be edgy but looking around the theatre at who was there and what they were laughing at I couldn’t stop cringing

My ex-H went to see it (while still married to me.) Bearing in mind that's my faith they're taking the piss out of (we got married in the LDS chapel I've been going to nearly every week for years, barring lockdown and illnesses) I was a bit miffed. Wouldn't have minded as much if it was after I LTB. 🤦🏻‍♀️ It wouldn't have felt so insulting.
