Wicked is the worst musical theatre EVER

Just returned for taking my 13 and 15 year olds to see Wicked at the Apollo in London.

OMG this is the worst show I have ever seen!

The storyline is weak, the singing is screechy and the songs forgettable. Kids hated it too.

We had great seats which cost me +£300, but sooo wish we had left during the interval. I didn't because I think it is rude to the actors but you couldn't pay me to sit through this again.

We go to the theatre a lot and have seen many musicals and straight drama productions. But I wouldn't recommend this show to my worst enemy.

AIBU Wicked the musical is an abomination?

I have fallen asleep at the theatre in nearly every musical I’ve ever seen.

But I think Les Mes is much worse than Wicked.

Floralnomad · 24/12/2023 01:35

YANBU , it’s terrible .

mybrainisfull · 24/12/2023 02:07

re Book of Mormon, I thought the show was very good. Very slick, with good performers and songs. But one or two of the things mentioned I felt went too far to be funny. Just not a funny idea.
Wicked, Hamilton - both meh.

Fionaville · 24/12/2023 02:11

YABU. I've seen it 5 times.

goldenrachita · 24/12/2023 02:20

Yanbu. I found it really cringey- like something a teenager would write. I was really surprised as it's always reviewed as one of the best shows.

HoppingPavlova · 24/12/2023 03:00

I’ve been to a few over the years. Some are meh, some are average, one was really brilliant. So, maybe the luck of who is tweaking, directing it at the time?

Yousay55 · 24/12/2023 03:01

Definitely not my favourite musical. What’s so awful about having bright green skin?! My teen dd’s loved it though.

stimpy1 · 24/12/2023 03:13

I agree, I have friends who have seen it loads as they love it but I took my daughter and was fairly disappointed, it got slightly better in the second half but I wouldn't rush back. The lion king on the other hand I could watch weekly. My absolute favourite was thriller, no real story line but great songs, singers and atmosphere!

Bananaandmarmite · 24/12/2023 03:16

Totally agree! Hated it!

it ended so abruptly too!! No encore. Just curtains down and over! Thought something had happened but apparently that’s it!

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thinks Cats was rubbish. Couldn't pay me to see it. The source material was tripe (never thought the Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats remotely funny) and the costumes and makeup just hideous.

I took my DM and DH to Cats. We had great seats and boy, did I get side-eyed when the "cats" mingled in the audience and one was right by me....and I laughed. I admit to not being to too many musicals, but that one I could have lived without. Never saw Wicked because others saw it, told me about it, so I passed. I saw Guys and Dolls, though and loved it though I am betting many others did not enjoy it.

Hummusanddipdip · 24/12/2023 04:18

I didn't enjoy it (can think of others I'd much prefer), one of my best friends describes it as the gateway musical to musicals, as in, its easy to watch and follow and once you've seen it you'll seek out others, which is a fairly accurate description in my opinion.

VonWeasel · 24/12/2023 04:50

Wicked and Les Mis are the worst two things I have ever seen at the theatre. I totally agree with your summary of it all and am only thankful that I didn't spend a fortune on tickets for Wicked. Dreadful.

WhatNoUsername · 24/12/2023 05:12

I hate musicals generally and loved Wicked!

shearwater2 · 24/12/2023 05:15

My family members took us all one year. It was very silly and not even particularly well performed, with one good song only. I didn't have massive expectations of it. We all laughed about it after.

Twilightstarbright · 24/12/2023 05:18

YANBU

i walked out at the interval which I rarely do, and I go to the theatre a lot. The sound quality was appalling.

SpecialCharacters · 24/12/2023 05:18

Never seen Wicked but Cats is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen, in any format.

shearwater2 · 24/12/2023 05:18

On the other hand I saw Les Mis 25 years ago and loved it, having listened to the music on a scratchy tape my friend made for me since I was a teenager. Have no desire to see it again now though, or the film again!

shearwater2 · 24/12/2023 05:20

I took DD1 to see the Lloyd Webber Wizard of Oz when she was 5. That was lovely, and vastly better than Wicked.

I really enjoyed Book of Mormon. Great songs, well performed, and I thought it was quite cleverly plotted.

I found some of the jokes/songs extremely funny but there were others that didn’t quite land for me. Still, it’s unusual for any comedy not to have a couple of dud jokes.

jay55 · 24/12/2023 05:30

I didn't enjoy wicked. It's just not my sort of show.

But it's no where near as bad as Viva forever(singing while getting Botox) or Gone with the wind the musical or Stephan Ward (I'd bought the cheapest upper circle seat and was moved to front stalls it was so empty, I should have taken the hint).

theveryhungrybum · 24/12/2023 05:41

It's my favourite musical. I've flown across the country to see it, and also seen it overseas. Isn't it great that we all like different things...world would be a boring place if we were all the same.

MaryShelley1818 · 24/12/2023 05:44

I loved it, the storyline is wonderful and the songs are all amazing.
YABVU.

Witchcraftandhokum · 24/12/2023 05:48

I saw it with the original Broadway cast. It was amazing.

LoudSnoringDog · 24/12/2023 06:03

Oh gosh we LOVE Wicked. Watched it numerous times in the UK and then on Broadway last Christmas
