Wicked is the worst musical theatre EVER

Just returned for taking my 13 and 15 year olds to see Wicked at the Apollo in London.

OMG this is the worst show I have ever seen!

The storyline is weak, the singing is screechy and the songs forgettable. Kids hated it too.

We had great seats which cost me +£300, but sooo wish we had left during the interval. I didn't because I think it is rude to the actors but you couldn't pay me to sit through this again.

We go to the theatre a lot and have seen many musicals and straight drama productions. But I wouldn't recommend this show to my worst enemy.

AIBU Wicked the musical is an abomination?

We hated it too and I so rarely meet anyone who feels the same!
We walked out during the interval and went to the nearest pub in shell shocked silence 😂
Horrific, amateurish, I’ve watched more enjoyable and talented shows at my junior school!
I’m only thankful that our friends got us free tickets through their work, we went as a 4 and left as a 4, none of us could quite believe what we had seen!

You have articulated exactly how I feel.

During the first 10 minutes I kept thinking (hoping) this will get better, but 20 minutes in I was side eyeing the kids to see if they were as baffled as me.

I took them to see Elf the musical last Christmas Eve and had a fab night.

Will have to try much harder next year.

You have obviously never had the “pleasure” of seeing Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Cinderella.

It is much worse

Grendell · 23/12/2023 23:38

I will never know, because I walked out of "Cats" 23 years ago and haven't darkened the door of a musical since then.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thinks Cats was rubbish. Couldn't pay me to see it. The source material was tripe (never thought the Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats remotely funny) and the costumes and makeup just hideous.

clare8allthepies · 23/12/2023 23:45

When I saw it I absolutely loved it. All of the main actors were good but the one playing Elphaba had a phenomenal voice. It was over 6 years ago so it’s probably a completely different cast but I would be surprised if the show was massively different.

CountTo10 · 23/12/2023 23:47

Oh I so agree it was awful. I bought ticket s for it thinking it was for the following January a few months away but turned out to be the following January nearly 18 months away.

As we left my 14 year old said with a big sigh, 'That really wasn't worth the wait'.

So dull with forgettable music.

We left Sunset Boulevard with Nicole Sherzinger in the interval tonight. Absolutely dreadful production. Maybe there's something in the air tonight 😂The tickets cost £600 for the 4 of us but I honestly couldn't sit there a minute longer! I actually quite liked Wicked but think it is very Elphaba-casting dependent.

I'm shocked to hear that as I saw it on Friday night and it's honestly one of the best things I have ever seen in my life, and I go to the theatre at least twice a month. Unfortunately you missed the best half by leaving at the interval.

I didn't enjoy Wicked much. The production is great and performers so talented but the story is ridiculous. Strangely my 15 year old loves it and has seen it five times already.

SGANDRUE · 23/12/2023 23:48

Hated wicked, too. Songs were forgettable. Just dull...

I loved it !!! 😳 Thought the casting of the stepmother was superb.

CluelessPadme · 23/12/2023 23:50

It’s on the GCSE Music syllabus, isn’t it? I guess it’s here to stay!

I thought it was ok. Not too much show-dancing, which I really hate in a musical

Vivalasvegan · 23/12/2023 23:54

Yes!! I thought Wicked was total tits having expected to love it as a Wizard of Oz fan. As you say the storyline is so weak, I don’t remember any of the songs making an impression on me as I just sat there in a state of bewilderment. I used to work with a lady who was something of a musical aficionado having seen every show going and she also thought Wicked was shite

WomensRightsRenegade · 23/12/2023 23:54

Wicked is my favourite musical ever. My kids and I adore the soundtrack.

On the other hand we all detested Hamilton. It seems like blasphemy to say you don’t like that show but we were desperate to leave at half time. The ultimate emperor’s new clothes! Awful dirge-like music, deathly dull storyline and no set changes/ costume changes. Total crock. Shame as I really enjoyed In The Heights, by the same creator

YouBetYourBippy · 23/12/2023 23:55

@Avacardo2023 I'm honestly shocked myself. I go to the theatre loads and had such high hopes for this show but just hated it from the off. The only other thing I've ever walked out of was the Dirty Dancing musical years ago!

Vanillalime · 23/12/2023 23:56

I kinda agree with you. Saw it many moons ago when it first came onstage in London & couldn’t really remember much about it, so went again a few weeks ago. I couldn’t fault the acting & singing but it’s just a bit ‘meh’ isn’t it??

Although I completely disagree with the poster above about Sunset Boulevard!! I actually started a post recently about it as I thought it was wonderful. Honestly can’t stop thinking about it & really want to go see it again before it closes.

There are plenty of others I don’t like: Les Mis, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the worst of all is Chess ♟️

So, so much worse. I was not surprised when it closed.

gavisconismyfriend · 24/12/2023 00:03

Loved it! Didn’t expect to. Thought the second half was particularly brilliant. Maybe it depends on how strong the leads are when it comes to singing. Audience gave a spontaneous standing ovation at the end, so think others liked it too!

sazzy5 · 24/12/2023 00:04

I love the Wizard of Oz, but hated Wicked. Terrible songs, awful storyline and I desperately wanted to leave.

rockinginarockingchair · 24/12/2023 00:04

Grease/ lion king /cats/ peter pan/ shrek just a few i can think of.
All awful boring over acted just cringey.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/12/2023 00:04

Oh I liked it. I’ve seen it twice with my two children. Thought it was quite clever.

LeggyLegsEleven · 24/12/2023 00:07

As soon as they turned up at a school, I knew it was going to be total shit. What a weak backstory. Like something a kid would write.

Canisaysomething · 24/12/2023 00:09

It’s by far the worst musical I’ve ever seen. The singing is so screechy and awful, zero gripping story line and the set design and costumes were particularly boring.

Sonolanona · 24/12/2023 00:10

Just do NOT go and see 'We will Rock you'
It makes Wicked look good.
I go to all the musicals..we are huge fans. JCSS is my personal favoutite, but love Cabaret, Blood Brothers, Evita, SIX etc.

We will Rock You is SOOOOOO bad. Went to see it as a friend is in the cast, and even he said it's probably better to be in it than watching it!!!

Stopsnowing · 24/12/2023 00:10

It was terrible - terrible storyline and songs and performances. It was like an amateur production. Emperor new clothes.

Dotcheck · 24/12/2023 00:11

Loved it. Saw it recently, and the only thing which slightly ruined it was the two kids in front of me who chattered the whole time. Rude.

lavenderlou · 24/12/2023 00:12

I love Wicked. I think it helps if you know a few of the songs and the basic storyline beforehand though.

Only show I've seen that I didn't enjoy was Cats. Baffling.

XelaM · 24/12/2023 00:12

I thought Wicked wasn't good, but the worst musical on the West End BY FAR is Grease (and I have seen a great many Grease productions including high school productions but have never ever seen anything this bad)! It was indescribably terrible and they changed the whole plot making it totally pointless and it didn't even have the car scene (and Sandy was dark-haired and very bitchy)!!!!
