To wonder if something is actually wrong with me or whether I’m just a bit weird?

Today I went to the hairdressers. It was cold and they brought a tea as is often the case. The hairdresser had gone to get the colour chart and I poured the tea, then sort of dipped my nose into the cup, not touching the tea but enough so the warmth hit my face. The cup was essentially completely over my face and I had leaned forward slightly to do this, it sort of suctioned the cup to my face. Obviously as you breath it makes it warmer initially so I was still doing it when the hairdresser came back. He looked astonished. I removed myself from the cup and he asked if I was ok, I said I was cold and tried to brush it off.

I have been thinking all day that I do things like this often. Am I lacking social awareness? A bit stupid? What is it? I can totally see in reflection that it was extremely weird but at the time it didn’t cross my mind at all.

Lol sorry OP but that's proper peculiar 😁

weitdsj · 13/12/2023 20:14

@BMW6 I know and I honestly did it without a second thought. I do this stuff often and don’t know why

Frankly if you want to do it and you're not hurting anyone I'd say you should do it. Our quirks and idiosyncrasies are a wonderful thing 💛

Peachyqueen · 13/12/2023 20:15

I often have impulses that I can't resist.

I also have ADHD and Austim.

All2Well · 13/12/2023 20:16

Yes that was strange, sorry! But sounds like sensory seeking behaviour?

BMW6 · 13/12/2023 20:16

I wouldn't worry about it though - nothing wrong with Eccentricity, which is an endearing trait if no-one is harmed by the particular habit.

English Eccentricity is world famous!

SoMuchOfEverything · 13/12/2023 20:17

🤣🤣🤣 Baaah-hahahahahaaaa! I'm going to start doing this

Dacadactyl · 13/12/2023 20:17

Lol yes it's a bit odd but if I was cold I might do something similar myself.

Passingthethyme · 13/12/2023 20:18

Thanks, that gave me a laugh imagining it. Needed that ☺️

MadamVastra · 13/12/2023 20:19

Of course it's weird but I would of laughed with you and probably tried it myself!

PaulaPocket · 13/12/2023 20:20

I've done this loads of times! Best with a big mug and a very steamy drink. My DP likes to bury his face in our tea cosy when it's warm off the pot. Is that sensory seeking behaviour? Isn't that just therapy-speak for liking a nice sensation?

SemperIdem · 13/12/2023 20:23

It’s a little strange, as in unusual, but not in a horrible way! Don’t worry about it op!

BreakfastAtMilliways · 13/12/2023 20:23

I remember at secondary school I used to stick my ruler down my knee length socks because I liked the sensation - it was akin to how your hand feels in a bucketful of dried beans. Unfortunately my French teacher saw me do it one day and made a sarky comment about it. 😳🤣

saraclara · 13/12/2023 20:24

One thing to put your nose close enough to really smell it and feel the warmth. Another to do it so that the suction fixes the cup to your face, I'm afraid!

MrsKwazi · 13/12/2023 20:25

I like holding my cheek over a warm mug.

You’re fine OP. What a boring world we’d live in if we were all the same.

PollyPeep · 13/12/2023 20:25

That made me laugh! It's endearing weird not creepy weird. Everyone has their quirks, I wouldn't worry about it. I guess most people might automatically not do unusual things in public, and if it bothers you, as it seems to, perhaps just keep "on your guard" in public to make sure you're doing the expected thing. But far more fun to just be yourself

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/12/2023 20:28

He’s got a new story to share! No harm done. How was your hair cut?

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 13/12/2023 20:28

That’s weird, but nicely so. I am almost certainly going to try it later.

MiniMaxi · 13/12/2023 20:29

Sounds like a brilliant idea! I’m fairly sure I used to put my ruler down my socks on occasion too, now you mention it @BreakfastAtMilliways

ScrambledSmegs · 13/12/2023 20:30

it sort of suctioned the cup to my face

I read this and thought your story was going to end up with you in A&E with 3rd degree burns!

Sauvblanctime · 13/12/2023 20:30

Sensory seeking 🥰

FairFuming · 13/12/2023 20:31

I do this, mostly just at home though 😆

BeethovenNinth · 13/12/2023 20:32

I do this! It’s a nice steamy sensation. I thought everyone did that when it’s cold?!

GettingFree · 13/12/2023 20:32

I know exactly what you mean (was just doing this with a cup of tea at home), and I don't think it's that weird at all. I think you just got distracted with it which is why you got busted by the hairdresser!

Jellykat · 13/12/2023 20:34

How do you stop the tea from going on your face and burning it? Confused one misjudged angle and its a goner surely?

Reminds me of when younger, brushing Copydex over your hand, waiting for it to dry, then peeling it off.. just because!

All perfectly acceptable by my book
