Today I went to the hairdressers. It was cold and they brought a tea as is often the case. The hairdresser had gone to get the colour chart and I poured the tea, then sort of dipped my nose into the cup, not touching the tea but enough so the warmth hit my face. The cup was essentially completely over my face and I had leaned forward slightly to do this, it sort of suctioned the cup to my face. Obviously as you breath it makes it warmer initially so I was still doing it when the hairdresser came back. He looked astonished. I removed myself from the cup and he asked if I was ok, I said I was cold and tried to brush it off.

I have been thinking all day that I do things like this often. Am I lacking social awareness? A bit stupid? What is it? I can totally see in reflection that it was extremely weird but at the time it didn’t cross my mind at all.

OP posts:

Rolling my eyes at all the armchair diagnosers and cheerleaders for behaviour that is ultimately just bad manners - snuffling and sweating into a cup that some poor salon junior is then going to have to pick up and wash is weird and nasty. The OP apparently has trouble working out how to act appropriately and asked for advice - it does her no favours to post bullshit like "ooh, you sound awesome! I'd want to be your friend if I saw that!" - come off it, no you wouldn't. There was a kid in my class at primary school who used to blow his nose into his hand then slowly lick off all the snot - nobody wanted to sit next to him!

The junior is going to have to wash OP's saliva off it anyway, so how is the OP making that worse?

Not only are you unpleasant, you're not very logical either.

I love things like this. It’s like you forgot you weren’t at home on your own for a minute.

It easy to forget other people are full human beings until you catch someone acting like this. The only thing YABU about is that you didn’t just turn to the hairdresser and say “oo lovely and warm”.

Mochudubh · 14/12/2023 15:21

Thinking about the ruler thing, I can kind of see if the ruler was the plastic/polythene type it might have a slight static charge that would raise the hairs on your let. But still.......

schmuzz · 14/12/2023 09:48

I mean I really doubt she had her face there long enough to start sweating and dripping into the cup. Never mind snuffling, she's a person, not a piglet.

Writing an aggressive post like that is more offensive on the spectrum of inappropriate behaviour.

Totally agree. 👏

The very shame of it 🤭

When I bought my 1st flat I used to run past the radiator, drop my drawers & stick my bum on it.

We do this but through our clothes. We call it cooking our bottoms.

I used to do this too! I'd forgotten about that.

This rings a bell so I must have done it too. Kids are weird.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 14/12/2023 15:30

Lol at this. No need for labels. Just be you. If I was the hairdresser it would have cheered me up to see this impulsive comfort seeking.

Rocketpants50 · 14/12/2023 15:41

Reading this with a cup of tea... well I couldn't help myself.

Just had to try it, though think the tea was a tad hot!

Chin has had a sauna, might be a little red. Might be an upgrade from resting my tea on my chin/ cheeks.

KimberleyClark · 14/12/2023 15:42

Do you also peel the chocolate off kitkats with your teeth in public? I did that for years, and it's only since I got the ASD diagnosis that I have realised that that is probably not the most attractive thing to do.

I used to do this with Club biscuits.

CornedBeef451 · 14/12/2023 18:20

@weitdsj I tried it this morning, it was very pleasant!

I won't be doing it in public though.

I stroke and twist my hair when I'm tired or stressed. I try very hard not to do it, and particularly not in front of other people but sometimes I forget.

I realised I was a bit stressed the other day when I noticed I had twisted my hair into tiny space buns while driving, but just on one side of my head. Luckily I was just going home rather than heading to work!

DottyLottieLou · 15/12/2023 08:30

You sound great. You just need to laugh it off, a long with others. You are aware you are doing daft stuff so you aren't socially unaware.

MsTwaffles · 15/12/2023 08:35

I steam my face over hot drinks all the time. Ivenever managed the suction effect, possibly because my drinks fill the cup quite high so Id end up with a nose full of hot liquid.
The fact you keep playing it over and over means you are very bothered by what other people think - try to relax and enjoy who you are. As a pp said, its our uniqueness that makes us wonderful and interesting

willWillSmithsmith · 15/12/2023 08:54

On a cold day I will breathe in the warmth of opening a hot oven door or ‘hug’ a hot towel out the dryer. It’s just good you didn’t burn your face with hot liquid having the cup suctioned to your face 😬

GrandyL · 15/12/2023 09:27

Most people have idiosyncrasies. I wouldn’t over analyse it

PaulaPocket · 15/12/2023 09:35

@GrandyL

I wouldn’t over analyse it

Er, you're new around here, aren't you?

ModestMoon · 15/12/2023 09:50

I do this exact same thing! Although I wouldn't do it in public I don't think, just because I expect your hairdresser's reaction from people. But it is not in itself a strange thing to do.

ForlTonightlGodlIslalDJ · 15/12/2023 09:53

Sorry this is hilarious 😂but tbh I don't think it's anything more than an embarrassing moment. Sort of thing that you would put on the cringe threads we sometimes have on here.

Howbizarre22 · 15/12/2023 09:59

I love this !! Fuck what anyone thinks and no it doesn’t mean you need to be diagnosed with adhd or something-those diagnoses are being handed out like sweets these days!! It’s just quirkiness & it’s fab- the world would be so boring if we were all exactly the same & followed “social norms” you were simply being your authentic self as a child would be! I do “odd” little things at times and people call me quirky to eccentric to “unique” lol and I love it, it makes me me. It’s endearing you did this and made me laugh. Keep being you! X

I always hold newly photocopied paper near my face because it feels so cosy!

I thought I was the only one 😭

😂

theduchessofspork · 14/12/2023 00:48

I am a great believing in being true to your (most eccentric) self

He was probably just thinking oh god is something wrong, rather than appalled.

Don’t worry about it

Could have pretended you'd lost something in the cup 😋

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 15/12/2023 10:36

The way you've described it is odd, but I don't think the action is odd. I see people hovering over their hot cuppa in coffee shops all the time. They're clearly taking advantage of the warm air!

FriedasCarLoad · 15/12/2023 10:39

I do that too!

I am a bit weird though, so maybe don't use me as a benchmark for normal behaviour...

WenttheDayWell · 15/12/2023 10:50

@ShowOfHands I have done this, I have got to the point where I have considered buying a small playhouse when DS moves out. I am having his room as a room for me as DH has the other bedroom as his office. I am having a craft and sewing table, a fold out sofa bed and want a reading corner with my playhouse in :)

I have had many a face in my steaming cup moments, I do not nose dip though.

SherbetDips · 15/12/2023 12:46

Best part about a cup of tea is inhaling its warmth 😜
