To wonder if something is actually wrong with me or whether I’m just a bit weird?

Today I went to the hairdressers. It was cold and they brought a tea as is often the case. The hairdresser had gone to get the colour chart and I poured the tea, then sort of dipped my nose into the cup, not touching the tea but enough so the warmth hit my face. The cup was essentially completely over my face and I had leaned forward slightly to do this, it sort of suctioned the cup to my face. Obviously as you breath it makes it warmer initially so I was still doing it when the hairdresser came back. He looked astonished. I removed myself from the cup and he asked if I was ok, I said I was cold and tried to brush it off.

I have been thinking all day that I do things like this often. Am I lacking social awareness? A bit stupid? What is it? I can totally see in reflection that it was extremely weird but at the time it didn’t cross my mind at all.

"The cup was essentially completely over my face..."

Was it a massive cup or do you have a tiny head?

BowlOfNoodles · 15/12/2023 17:38

I humiliate myself all the time also lol

Totally weird. Most of us have odd habits but by the time we finish primary school we've got a sense of what is and isn't appropriate behaviour to display in a public place. Sticking your whole face into a hot drink like some sort of Labrador is a really peculiar thing to do, especially when you know other people can see. Also seems unwise - don't you ever scald your face?

Yes, it sometimes leads to a sore nose, or a peculiar suction ring round your mouth. I just say "I know I look a bit odd, but I've got a suction ring round my mouth", or "I'm not pregnant, but I couldn't think of where else to put my hat and scarf and gloves and keys and shopping because I forgot one of my 46 jute bags, other than down the front of my coat, so the baby I am cradling is actually all my shopping".

I do the kit kat thing too but had never realised that other people didn't. I also crack the shell of Tunnocks tea cakes and eat the chocolate with my fingers, then lick the white stuff off, then regret that I have no chocolate or white stuff to eat with the base.

Cotonsugar · 15/12/2023 19:29

The sort of thing you would do at home and not out in public - for me anyway 😊

saraclara · 15/12/2023 20:53

I'd forgotten that I used to do the face suction thing with tupperware beakers when I was a kid. After I'd finished my drink though.

And I'm not (as far as I know) neuro diverse.

Sensibleandboring · 15/12/2023 21:17

I do that too 🤣

Wednesdaysotherchild · 15/12/2023 22:21

I think I’ve done this at home before (adhd dx).

DahliasEverywhere · 15/12/2023 22:26

That’s hilarious and something I would have done AT HOME! Not everyone appreciates open displays of batshit 😂

Hernameisdeborah · 15/12/2023 23:35

I do this kind of thing all the time! It probably did look quite strange/ funny to the hairdresser who would not have been expecting to walk in on someone with their face in a mug looking kind of like an anteater (if I've pictured it correctly), but totally see why you'd do it, it's not weird really.

wildeflowers · 15/12/2023 23:39

I must have done this a few times even though I don't actively remember, when you described it I knew exactly what you're talking about. I'm weird so I don't know if it's normal or not, but normal is highly overrated. Please keep being yourself, you sound adorable.

Jellykat · 13/12/2023 20:34

How do you stop the tea from going on your face and burning it? Confused one misjudged angle and its a goner surely?

Reminds me of when younger, brushing Copydex over your hand, waiting for it to dry, then peeling it off.. just because!

All perfectly acceptable by my book

You can feel the steam.
Although I only do this with water and a drop of olbas oil.

KJKB · 16/12/2023 08:19

I can assure you, they would have seen/heard weirder things! Don't worry about being yourself and don't change if you're not hurting anyone..especially not for people who you barely know and have little impact on your life. The people who matter, the people who truly love you, will love you for all your weirdness.

Wick55 · 16/12/2023 14:49

I do weird things like lick my fingers a little bit before I scratch an itch because I can’t stand the feeling of dry skin on skin. It must look feral.

LBFseBrom · 16/12/2023 16:39

You surely don't scratch in public, Wick55.

webs1991 · 16/12/2023 17:51

I’d probably do this in the house but not outside you’ve probably just done it without thinking it’s a wee bit weird but harmless

JMSA · 16/12/2023 18:01

You're totally fine.
Put it this way: were you harming anyone? No.
Funnily enough, my mum and sisters often moan that their hairdresser's is freezing too.
Maybe he was just a bit defensive Grin

Greenpolkadot · 16/12/2023 19:22

Will you go back to the hairdressers op ?

FairytaleChristmas · 16/12/2023 21:24

I do things like this all the time - sometimes if I'm cold I make coffee just to sit and keep my nose warm in the cup.. which I never really thought about til this moment!

Lowtidelooter · 17/12/2023 01:37

I’m sure this would be fine if I could make head or tail of it.

How does a mug cover your whole face and how is it getting so suctioned onto it that it’s stuck? Are you drinking out of a giant toilet plunger?

ChimneyPot · 17/12/2023 02:00

I can’t picture this at all but can totally picture me with a cup of tea tomorrow trying to recreate it and burning my face

newmomaboutthreads · 17/12/2023 02:09

I sometimes press a warm mug into my eyes to soothe them if they’re itchy or tired. We’re all weird. Do what you need to do

Bertiesmum3 · 17/12/2023 06:21

I put my hot mug after drinking contents between my boobs to warm me up in the evenings 🤣🤣🤣

WitsEnd10 · 17/12/2023 11:08

If I saw this I’d think “what a stone cold weirdo - she’s my kinda person” ha ha. It’s odd behaviour, but I like people’s little foibles and eccentricities.

Teaismymiddlename · 17/12/2023 20:01

Very normal!!
It's like everything has to have a reason or a name now a days. It's just people doing stuff 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ like literally just being human!!

NaughtybutNice77 · 17/12/2023 21:29

I've not read all the replies but I'd guess you are naturally diverse and/or have lived alone for a long time.
It's very unusual and weird. It makes complete sense though
