To wonder if something is actually wrong with me or whether I’m just a bit weird?

Today I went to the hairdressers. It was cold and they brought a tea as is often the case. The hairdresser had gone to get the colour chart and I poured the tea, then sort of dipped my nose into the cup, not touching the tea but enough so the warmth hit my face. The cup was essentially completely over my face and I had leaned forward slightly to do this, it sort of suctioned the cup to my face. Obviously as you breath it makes it warmer initially so I was still doing it when the hairdresser came back. He looked astonished. I removed myself from the cup and he asked if I was ok, I said I was cold and tried to brush it off.

I have been thinking all day that I do things like this often. Am I lacking social awareness? A bit stupid? What is it? I can totally see in reflection that it was extremely weird but at the time it didn’t cross my mind at all.

OP posts:

Totally. Do I need a diagnosis? I rub the hot cup on my face or plaster it over my eye. As a dc I used to suck the cup up over my mouth. I ended up awfully bruised.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 13/12/2023 20:42

OMG, this really made me laugh! Bless you, OP, yes, it’s a bit odd - but there’s nothing wrong with that.

I often do or say slightly strange things on impulse and then feel a bit weird about it later. NT afaik, but I have an ND child and had always assumed it came from DH’s side, but on reflection maybe not …

Sounds like a brilliant idea! I’m fairly sure I used to put my ruler down my socks on occasion too, now you mention it @BreakfastAtMilliways

I definitely used to do this too.

BabyofMine · 13/12/2023 20:47

I can’t imagine/picture what you did at all 🙈😂

BabyofMine · 13/12/2023 20:48

Like, did you have tea over your face?! Was it wet? Otherwise I don’t understand the suction bit!

DinaofCloud9 · 13/12/2023 20:51

It's funny but harmless and nothing to be embarrassed about. We all have our own little ways.

atthecoreofallyoudo · 13/12/2023 20:56

I do this kind of thing. I just say "I accidentally suctioned the cup to my face because I was cold and it kind of got stuck there". The other person laughs and so do I. It's all good.

LusaBatoosa · 13/12/2023 21:07

This made me cackle and now I have to explain why to DH! 🤣

Don't feel bad, OP! We’re all a bit odd. It keeps life interesting.

ErmWhatever · 13/12/2023 21:08

I've done this. It's not that weird.

Whenever I'm freaking out about making some social faux pas or embarrassing myself, I ask...when is the last time you remember a friend, acquaintance or stranger doing something "weird" ?
I literally never can.
No one gives a shit about you as much as you give a shit about you.

Try it. It works.

Headshoulderscheeseontoast · 13/12/2023 21:08

I've done this at home loads of times, it feels lovely! I wouldn't do it in public personally because my face would get all shiny lol

musicalfrog · 13/12/2023 21:10

I cannot see any problem with this.

I do weird shit like this and I reason with myself, why not? It hurts nobody and satisfies me. 😌

You sound adorable tbh.

CornedBeef451 · 13/12/2023 21:25

If it makes you feel better I once got caught in Bravissimo with a bra cup on my head.

I was trying on strapless ones for my wedding and I'm a JJ cup. I'd just thought, ooh, that looks like it would fit on my head, immediately tried it and the woman walked straight back into the cubicle.

I was mortified but tried to style it out.

I will try warming my face over my tea in the morning, (in the privacy of my kitchen), I had never thought of it before!

Ploctopus · 13/12/2023 21:28

That is a deliciously funny image!

It is, truthfully, a bit weird - but in a harmless, actually quite sweet way. It sounds like you don’t have a huge amount of impulse control or self consciousness but those aren’t sins, most of us could actually do to be a bit less constrained.

Snowdogsmitten · 13/12/2023 21:31

I mean, he’s probably talking about you a lot today, but so what? Being weird is better than being boring and predictable.

Squeaky2023 · 13/12/2023 21:31

The butcher was complaining about his cold hands the other week, so I suggested he warmed them up inside one of his hot, rotisserie chickens.
We all laughed, me the hardest at my own joke.
You're good, OP. I like your style.

KeepingTrying · 13/12/2023 21:33

I think it sounds as though you have original and interesting ideas and you are not driven by how other people view you, which is good. I worry slightly that you might burn yourself.

I used to do similar things and I have an adult ASD diagnosis now. I also have interesting and original ideas which unfortunately turn out to be slightly unsafe. My doctor sees more of me than is really ideal.

Do you also peel the chocolate off kitkats with your teeth in public? I did that for years, and it's only since I got the ASD diagnosis that I have realised that that is probably not the most attractive thing to do.

I do this- over my eye or hold it on my cheek. I also do the suctioning thing like OP.

I do suspect I have ADHD, I didn't think this was related though but I suppose it's sensory seeking ahha.

ShowOfHands · 13/12/2023 21:45

There are all sorts of things I find comforting. Like den building. In my own house. When I'm alone. I then sit and eat in my den and read, before putting all the blankets back and nobody ever knows. Sometimes I sit in my den with a hot drink and put my face over the steam. It's next level joy. Try it op.

CasaAmarela · 13/12/2023 21:46

I do this too, it's amazing 😂

This comment keeps making me laugh and brings to mind the book "101 Things To Do With a Dead Cat" (oven glove)

This made me HOWL! 🤣🤣🤣

There are so many of you on this thread who I would love to hang out with.

Crying with laughter at this!

HalebiHabibti · 13/12/2023 23:21

When I was at school I went through a phase of cutting erasers up into little tiny bits and then eating them. The other kids saw me and understandably ripped the piss. The teacher then took the opportunity to teach us the phrase "making a mountain out of a molehill" and explained that's what the other kids were doing about my admittedly unusual behaviour. He was a fab teacher.

Another one with autism here, since you ask 😂

ApplePieand · 13/12/2023 23:21

Yes yes to copydex and ruler down my socks. There must be tens of us
