Not sure what to think of this comment at my son’s parents evening

He's 5 and in reception. It was his first parents evening.
Teacher said mostly positive things and that he’s very fun and clever, picks things up quickly.

In a joking way she said “he’ll either take over the world or destroy it”
I laughed it off , but when I told a friend she was quite shocked and thought it wasn’t funny or appropriate.

I'd have laughed at this , the teacher is just commenting that he has a strong character.

Nothing to be offended about.

As you say - he’s 5 and in Reception. It’s a meaningless and humorous way of saying he’s a bit of a live wire and has a strong personality.

It's a little joke. I remember being told something similar about my son - "If he could get himself organised he'd be dangerous." I laughed. He's still badly organised.

It just means he's a strong character with lots of drive and energy that will need channeling properly. You wouldn't say it about a child you didn't warm to. It's affectionate.

My daughter's 10 now but the teacher said at her first parents evening that she'll either run the country or a gang in prison.

I think it's a common joke teachers make.

It's just a joke. Some people look for something to feel offended about.

I say that about one of my own children to be honest.

He’s obviously not actually going to destroy the world and she doesn’t really think that. It was just a joke. It probably just means he’s a good leader and knows his own mind.

Exactly this. I cannot get over how the most innocuous of light hearted comments are scrutinised, and give rise to disproportionate outrage. It is so harmless. Just let the teachers say nothing apart from bland vanilla comments going forwards. Much easier all round.

I’d find that funny. I’ve often said I hope my son decides to use his skills for good, not evil

it is a compliment, he can achieve much and can put this towards his current interersts
