Not sure what to think of this comment at my son’s parents evening

Blackdore · 05/12/2023 15:00

He's 5 and in reception. It was his first parents evening.
Teacher said mostly positive things and that he’s very fun and clever, picks things up quickly.

In a joking way she said “he’ll either take over the world or destroy it”
I laughed it off , but when I told a friend she was quite shocked and thought it wasn’t funny or appropriate.

Let me guess… you wanted to be a teacher but didn’t get the grades….oops!

I think many children dodged a bullet there.

Umtydumpy · 05/12/2023 17:47

Your friend needs to chill out

NorthernGirlie · 05/12/2023 17:48

DS' teacher said of him in Year 1
He's got the potentially to be exceptional, academically. He never will be mind, he's too laid back and lazy

She was right! 🤣

I had so many comments of this ilk about dd1. My favourite was the Year 5 teacher who, exhausted, told me he'd had a full week of her talking at him and if I can think of a way to make it stop he'd be grateful Grin Grin (he was a terrific teacher; it was all very much in jest).

Op, the teacher doesn't literally mean your dc is going to destroy the world. It's purely metaphorical, and proof that their teacher sees before them an incredible little person with strength of character. Indeed, 'destroy' could even mean shake the world up for the better!

You've reminded me of a comment from DC's teacher when they were small. They were a bit of a chatterbox so we'd practised being quiet at home and they had a little tiny toy animal that fit in their pocket and was to remind them to be quiet. The teacher said 'oh the animal is great - but now they just talk to it!' Grin

Whyyoulyingfor · 05/12/2023 17:49

Wow. Once again, no wonder so many teachers quit with opinions like this. My primary school teacher friends are very intelligent, caring and nurturing people. They go above and beyond for the children in their care- often making up for the failings of their parents by brushing their teeth for them, feeding them, clothing them. Get lost with your ignorant comment and walk a day in a teacher’s shoes.

Mischance · 05/12/2023 17:50

I think you have had a sense of humour failure! I often had comments like that from teachers and it usually means they find the child fun and interesting to teach. One said my DD was going to be PM because she liked to be in charge - I laughed - I knew what the teacher meant!

I'm always amazed by people who think Reception/KS1 teachers are less intelligent than Y6 ones. Parents at one school I worked in used to think if TAs moved down a year group it was some sort of demotion. The content of learning isn't the challenge at any level when teaching primary; the challenge is getting children to learn it! (And FYI Tighginn, I have a first class degree from a redbrick uni, a distinction in my SENCO masters and don't have a school exam result less than an A. I've taught Reception and I've taught Y6).

Indeed. A close friend (she's retired now) has a first from Oxford and decided to train to teach nursery children.

FYI PGCEs are at least 9 months & a 2:2 is a perfectly reasonable result.

Fingeronthebutton · 05/12/2023 17:52

A similar thing was said about my granddaughter. I was very proud 😍
Shes no wimp.

Orangeandgold · 05/12/2023 17:56

Well the “destroy it” is a little harsh but sounds like he is a bold character. I think she should have stopped at “he would probably take over the world…”

Also a brave comment to make the first time meeting you but I find teachers are so awkward at parents evenings anyway.

SkylersWhite · 05/12/2023 17:56

@Tighginn goes from thread to thread posting one ludicrous comment, usually only half a line.

Classics such as 'I've don't know a teacher who isn't an alcoholic' spring to mind.

Just throwing bombs with no actual intelligent thought behind them. And never comes back to justify or back anything up.

salamirose · 05/12/2023 17:57

Your "friend" is trying to shit on your candle

pyjamalife · 05/12/2023 17:58

I genuinely hope both my children receive this comment. It's such a great compliment and I love it.

Just did a search, yup you're so right. And she's partial to a quaffing a whole bottle of cava solo. May explain the dumb bombs.

She's basically called your 5 year old kid Elon Musk.

Whether you find it offensive or complimentary depends on how you feel about Elon Musk.

These posts always have a oh so reasonable op with a weird, opinionated friend or family member.

Is this friend imaginary?

GRex · 05/12/2023 18:17

Surround yourself with people who set the lighter side of life, and minimise time spent with those who try to create drama like "friend" in this case.

Sounds like your DS is getting on very well, and has a decent teacher. Treasure the less formal relationship, it's all a lot easier further down the line when you have an issue with the level of his reading book or DS pushed someone over or whatever else needs a 5 min chat.

And in need of a basic spelling lesson...
