Not sure what to think of this comment at my son’s parents evening

Blackdore · 05/12/2023 15:00

He's 5 and in reception. It was his first parents evening.
Teacher said mostly positive things and that he’s very fun and clever, picks things up quickly.

In a joking way she said “he’ll either take over the world or destroy it”
I laughed it off , but when I told a friend she was quite shocked and thought it wasn’t funny or appropriate.

What an awful derogatory statement to make.

No doubt it comes from someone who hasn't achieved much with their own life, so the only way to feel a little bit better about themselves is to drag everyone else down.

Switcher · 05/12/2023 18:31

People say all sorts of bollocks. Health visitor at the 5 day visit said "look at those eyelashes, he'll be a heartbreaker one day". Bizarre but whatever!

That might be the case but I’m certain they will still have a better understanding of spelling and punctuation than you! 🙄

SlashBeef · 05/12/2023 18:36

Let me guess... you're a neurosurgeon at the top of your field?

Fionaville · 05/12/2023 18:38

People do tend to make a lot of silly comments about young kids, half the time it's just for something to say. Young girl is nice and kind "She'd be a good nurse" Little boy plays well with girls, he'll be a "ladies man" It's all such nonsense that's supposed to be taken with a pinch of salt.
I'd take that comment to mean that he's a natural leader, but maybe he's such a strong influence to other kids that he could get them to do his bidding, so watch out for that. But it's not a negative. Again, just a silly phrase that some people use.

TrishTrix · 05/12/2023 18:44

I'd take it as a compliment and see how it pans out!

The one in our family "X has had a good start to primary school after we established who was in charge in the classroom".

The person concerned is still bossy 30+ years later.

fulawitt · 05/12/2023 18:44

He is very clever. This is what it means. Either he rules the world or becomes the head of the mafia because you have to be very clever to do these things. Your friend has no humour.

Usernamechange1234 · 05/12/2023 18:46

Definitely bypass the normal complaints procedure and go straight to OFSTED with this one😊!

Honestly OP your friend has got a sense of humour bypass. A similar thing was said about my child and I’m still waiting to find out if he’s the evil genius I expect he is. I was dead proud they recognised his potential!

Xil · 05/12/2023 18:52

You were there and know the overall tone of the feedback was positive, so should be able work out this is how it was intended.

It sounds like she's got the measure of your child and thought you'd see the relationship with her as one where you both contribute towards a common goal.

As a professional she is allowed to acknowledge that a child has potential but still needs to channel it in the right direction.

StopWithYourNonsense · 05/12/2023 15:08

It's just a joke. Some people look for something to feel offended about.

It wasn't until I found MN that I realised how many people have zero sense of humour - and how easily some people are offended. A real eye-opener!

theduchessofspork · 05/12/2023 18:57

Oh come off it

It’s funny and a compliment - he’s a powerful character.

Flubadubba · 05/12/2023 18:59

Reminds me of an (affectionate) comment my daughter's nursery key worker once made: "She would make a great cult leader".

We just laughed at it, as we also noticed that she has a way with other kids that means they listen to her and follow what she says.

I often say similar about my own daughter. She’s a livewire and incredibly sharp witted!

One of my friends is a reception class teacher. She was originally a T A and then trained to teach while bringing up two children on her own. She is a wonderful teacher, very hardworking and I am full of respect for her.

Princessfluffy · 05/12/2023 19:15

Is he quite destructive?

You are quite the little ray of sunshine.

I suspect this charmer didn't even "scrap" a 2:2 at any kind of "uni".

Electrolens · 05/12/2023 19:20

One of my secondary school teachers said at a parent’s evening I’d either become famous or infamous! I think it’s saying you’re an interesting/headstrong personality. I think you’d have to be super sensitive and looking for it to find offence (and I’m neither btw!)

Views like this is part of the reason why there’ll be even less qualified teachers teaching children as time goes on.

Because 2:1 or 1st guarantees that a person is an amazing teacher, doesn't it? You may want to do something about that lack of perspective. It's a far bigger limitation than a 2:2.
