Not sure what to think of this comment at my son’s parents evening

Blackdore · 05/12/2023 15:00

He's 5 and in reception. It was his first parents evening.
Teacher said mostly positive things and that he’s very fun and clever, picks things up quickly.

In a joking way she said “he’ll either take over the world or destroy it”
I laughed it off , but when I told a friend she was quite shocked and thought it wasn’t funny or appropriate.

Did you mean scraped?

ManateeFair · 05/12/2023 17:01

I'm sorry, but anyone who is offended by that comment or thinks it's inappropriate needs to go and stand in a corner and think about what they've done.

What a ridiculous and completely false assumption.

I'm always amazed by people who think Reception/KS1 teachers are less intelligent than Y6 ones. Parents at one school I worked in used to think if TAs moved down a year group it was some sort of demotion. The content of learning isn't the challenge at any level when teaching primary; the challenge is getting children to learn it! (And FYI Tighginn, I have a first class degree from a redbrick uni, a distinction in my SENCO masters and don't have a school exam result less than an A. I've taught Reception and I've taught Y6).

I think @Tighginn should have listened to the teacher in school when they were teaching them how to spell scraped.

Mothmansknickers · 05/12/2023 17:11

I would have deciphered this, as he has a very strong personality and may well end up in a leadership role. It's easy to get confused over semantics though.
Please don't dwell on it.

BeethovenNinth · 05/12/2023 17:13

I would take it as a compliment!

😂😂

do you think her teacher got a 2.2?😂

Ardith · 05/12/2023 17:18

It’s a common type of joke, I was told something similar about my son.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 05/12/2023 17:19

I say similar about a niece. She's ferocious and strong and I mean in it a good way.

RedDoughnut · 05/12/2023 17:20

Honestly, I'd be so proud if someone had said that of my child! I'd actually think it was a compliment and probably get a Tshirt printed with it on.

It's great to have some original thought!

madnessitellyou · 05/12/2023 17:21

I had so many comments of this ilk about dd1. My favourite was the Year 5 teacher who, exhausted, told me he'd had a full week of her talking at him and if I can think of a way to make it stop he'd be grateful Grin Grin (he was a terrific teacher; it was all very much in jest).

Op, the teacher doesn't literally mean your dc is going to destroy the world. It's purely metaphorical, and proof that their teacher sees before them an incredible little person with strength of character. Indeed, 'destroy' could even mean shake the world up for the better!

Iwasafool · 05/12/2023 17:22

I hate to tell you this but she's wrong. My GD is the one who is going to take over the world. There is no doubt about it, she is strong willed and bright.

What a ridiculous assumption! Once you have a teaching qualification you are actually qualified to teach any age group. Lots of primary teachers work in secondary schools. Do you really think headteachers allocate staff to year groups ranking them on their degree results? 🤷‍♀️😂

Theblacksheepandme · 05/12/2023 17:28

You need to stop letting your friend do your thinking for you. You didn't think anything of it until your friend said something. The teacher was joking and I wouldn't think anymore of it. Crikey they have a tough enough job as it is, without parents reading into everything that they say.

cerisepanther73 · 05/12/2023 17:36

@Blackdore
It's a complement

your son's teacher saying, your son has character, another words, hes got plenty of personality energetic,
he's dynamic

Nothing offensive about this remark,

I think 🤔 your teacher likes your son character.

Yes one should listen only to the opinions of the wise people like Tighginn who so eloquently express their ignorance and narrow mindedness

gotthearse · 05/12/2023 17:39

Christ, people get offended at their own shadow these days.

cerisepanther73 · 05/12/2023 17:39

@madnessitellyou

Totally agree you with you on your remark,
you have articulated better than me,

User56785 · 05/12/2023 17:44

It's a great idea to be offended by a remark at your child's first parents evening.

Why not complain and make it clear to every member of staff that you expect them to treat you formally? No relaxed relationship for you, After all, it's not like you have six and three quarter years to go with these people spending seven hours a day five days a week with your child.

That will foster a lovely relationship between you and the school that you can enjoy for the next twenty terms.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 05/12/2023 17:45

It’s a lighthearted joke. Ffs I would hate to be a teacher these days.

Whyyoulyingfor · 05/12/2023 17:46

You are one of the reasons so many teachers quit the profession. Constantly walking on eggshells. She was joking.
