Not sure what to think of this comment at my son’s parents evening

He's 5 and in reception. It was his first parents evening.
Teacher said mostly positive things and that he’s very fun and clever, picks things up quickly.

In a joking way she said “he’ll either take over the world or destroy it”
I laughed it off , but when I told a friend she was quite shocked and thought it wasn’t funny or appropriate.

@Tighginn goes from thread to thread posting one ludicrous comment, usually only half a line.

Classics such as 'I've don't know a teacher who isn't an alcoholic' spring to mind.

Just throwing bombs with no actual intelligent thought behind them. And never comes back to justify or back anything up.

Thanks for that. I'll try to remember to ignore in future.

Wow is this really necessary?

I wouldn’t take offence at all. When my DS (ADHD to the max) was about 9 he told his teacher he would be off school for a couple of days she said good! I imagine she enjoyed the couple of days peace and quiet 😂😂

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 05/12/2023 19:39

You did know what to think of the comment... you laughed. Then your mate whispered in your ear and you're not sure whether to be outraged. You need to not be so easily swayed tbh.

Take it as the joke it was meant to be and thank your lucky stars the reception teacher is not this poster. 😉

Yes, my thoughts as well

I often say my DD will end up running an international criminal organisation or the United Nations. It could go either way

Wanttobekind · 05/12/2023 19:42

At one and a half my offspring’s keyworker said that if they were ever short of staff they would leave her to run the room.
It’s affectionate and means they are strong personalities and smart and it’s something to be proud of.

Loving all the comments about other people’s strong-willed children, I feel seen 🤣

CathyAnne91 · 05/12/2023 19:43

Oh wow. The irony of commenting on someone’s education, whilst not managing to spell scraped correctly.

Bravo. 🎓

How fucking rude.

Bet she knows the word is scraped not scrapped

Because 2:1 or 1st guarantees that a person is an amazing teacher, doesn't it? You may want to do something about that lack of perspective. It's a far bigger limitation than a 2:2.

So true. We have had two Oxbridge graduates who were very bad teachers, despite experience. We were so excited about the first and gave him an A level class thinking his subject knowledge and willingness at interview would make him a great teacher with this age group. Turned out to be a big mistake.

UnfortunateTypo · 05/12/2023 19:44

My daughter’s headmaster said that about her at 6. She’s 20 now and still trying to live up to it 😂 I honestly wouldn’t be offended.

Benibidibici · 05/12/2023 19:46

Id probably see this comment as a compliment lol

CathyAnne91 · 05/12/2023 19:47

I was told that my daughter would either be running the world, or a prison.

Was I offended? Nah. Can I fully see it? Yep.

Don't take offence, just means your little’un is strong willed, which is no bad thing.

X

Great to see the respect you have for our teachers. Maybe you’d like to give it a go.

willWillSmithsmith · 05/12/2023 19:57

Tell your friend to lighten up. It’s people like her who are making this world an utterly miserable place to ever open your mouth.

Castleview6 · 05/12/2023 19:59

I’d just take it that the teacher has a sense of humour and knows your son. I’d be really pleased to have them teaching my child.

I wonder if their 2:2 would have taught them the difference between ' scraped' and ' scrapped'? If you are going to disparage teachers educational achievements at least learn to spell yourself.

Veryirritating · 05/12/2023 20:04

Me thinks you are humblebragging OP

JudgeJ · 05/12/2023 20:10

I have parents' evening tonight with my Y10 class. Hopefully I won't offend anyone...

At the end of a long Year 10 Parents' Evenings one father came at the very end, there'd been an accident on the motorway, he was desperately trying to get round, when he came to me last He said Can you keep it short but honest?, clearly knackered so I told him 'There's not much wrong with 'son' that a good kick up the arse wouldn't cure! Is that short and honest enough??'. The boy went on to get great GCSE grades, the A levels and a 2.1 at University in my subject.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/12/2023 20:48

@JudgeJ Grin I'm not sure I'd quite get away with saying that at my school!

pumpkintart · 05/12/2023 22:09

I think your friend may need to relax a little it's a humerus affectionate comment that they are intelligent and quick but with a cheeky side.

JudgeJ · 05/12/2023 22:51

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/12/2023 20:48

@JudgeJ Grin I'm not sure I'd quite get away with saying that at my school!

I knew the father quite well, his wife had died a couple of years earlier and we knew he was finding things hard going but his sons were great, just having a touch of the Year 10 lazi-itis! He did say it was the most honest thing anyone had said to him, his son the next day was a bit annoyed but then said Can't disagree with you Miss!

ACynicalDad · 05/12/2023 22:57

I doubt you've given birth to the reincarnation of Stalin, Hitler of Genghis Khan. Take a chill pill; maybe the teacher shouldn't have said it, but better not to have one on their guard who is too careful what they say.

Dweetfidilove · 05/12/2023 23:11

I hope you share your child’s strength of character, so friend won’t transfer her offence to you 🤞🏾.
