All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

Do you live within the arctic circle?

WrongSwanson · 25/11/2023 14:20

Can you have a warm bath/get under a heated blanket or similar?

AffIt · 25/11/2023 14:21

Been bloody stupid?

Have a hot drink and a bath, remember to wear a coat outside in future.

You're cold, but you're fine.

187s · 25/11/2023 14:21

It was -1. I’m not really one for wearing layers so this has really surprised me.

@WrongSwanson no bath but have tried lots of hot drinks and it’s not making a difference

I work outside and sometimes the only way to warm up is to have a hot bath.

IcedupTulip · 25/11/2023 14:21

It’s cold out there today. I find when I get really cold it takes me ages to feel warm and cosy again.

AhBiscuits · 25/11/2023 14:21

I would say not normal, maybe you are coming down with something.

gamerchick · 25/11/2023 14:22

You need to heat from the inside out. Could you run a bath maybe?

alwaysbreaks · 25/11/2023 14:22

Have a hot shower 🤷‍♀️

KimberleyClark · 25/11/2023 14:22

Sounds like a chill, when your body temperature drops lower than normal. Hot water bottle or heated throw, hot drinks etc.

shivawn · 25/11/2023 14:23

If you've been shivering for hours have you tried checking your temperature to make sure you don't have a fever? There's so many viral infections going around at the moment.

Drivingmisspotty · 25/11/2023 14:23

I think sometimes it just kind of gets into your bones (not medical diagnosis 😂)

You need to add heat.

  • hot water bottle
  • electric blanket
  • fab heater pointed at you
  • cuddle up with a loved one
  • lots of layers/blankets/duvet

I’m sure you will be right as rain soon but pretty sure hot drinks or alcohol are not recommended - they might feel hot but they don’t actually help to warm your body.

Hot shower then or hot water bottle?

Deliadidit · 25/11/2023 14:23

I get like that when I’m anaemic -
just can’t warm up once I’ve got cold.

mynameiscalypso · 25/11/2023 14:23

The only way I ever get warm when I'm like this is by having a hot bath.

AffIt · 25/11/2023 14:24

It's about two degrees where I am (Glasgow) just now.

If I went outside for a prolonged period of time without wearing sufficient clothing then I would get cold and it would take quite a long time for my core temperature to reestablish itself.

Perfectly normal

Tl;dr - play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

TheChippendenSpook · 25/11/2023 14:24

If I'm that cold, I have to get completely changed. It's weird but it like the cold air gets trapped in what I'm wearing.

mindutopia · 25/11/2023 14:25

I would assume you are likely getting ill. Have you taken your temperature. I was outside for about 2 hours this morning in a hoodie and while it’s cold, it’s not that cold, unless you are otherwise unwell.

What on earth does this mean? That you never wear a coat?

AdaColeman · 25/11/2023 14:29

Get into bed with warm socks on and a hot water bottle at your feet. Once your core temperature has dropped, it needs help to boost it back up again.
Hope you feel better very soon.

firef1y · 25/11/2023 14:30

I did parkrun this morning, 40+ minutes wearing a base layer, t-shirt and shorts (fresh leg tattoo that I can't cover yet). It was 1degree and bloody cold, 4.5hrs later I'm just starting to warm up. You need to change out of the clothes you were wearing, have some hot drinks and a warm (not hot, hot will bloody hurt if you're chilled to the bone) bath that you gradually add more hot water to, then snuggle under the duvet for a while. I train outside in all weather's and this is my go to when I get chilled to the bone.

Cornettoninja · 25/11/2023 14:35

I find eating hot food (solid not soup) helps me warm up quicker. I figured it’s probably having something hot inside me plus the digestion process keeping that going.

Also moving about speeds things up. Run the vac around?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/11/2023 14:42

Put a hat and gloves on and wrap up in a blanket with another/ hot drink/ soup
The trick is to warm your core slowly

Same

Cherrysoup · 25/11/2023 14:44

Hot bath to warm your core. I can’t wait to get in mine, need to wait for my DH to get up or I’ll wake him.

Today was the first day I wore ‘the big coat’ and gloves on a dog walk in the country. I was only just warming up after an hour.
