All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

I’ve never heard of putting mustard powder in hot water and soaking your feet what does the mustard do 🤣

It's something my nan used to do
I tried it after being soaked with the horses and was melting within about 10 mins
Mustard baths are a thing too

inapickle2300 · 25/11/2023 18:28

Ok, so I put YABU because you’re being dramatic about it. But one time, I walked home from a club in -2 and just a dress, I got so cold that I didn’t feel cold and when I started to defrost warm up, that is when I started shaking and that is when I had to make myself uber-warm to get past the shakes.

HappyMe6 · 25/11/2023 18:28

Well I’m going to have to try that one witchypaws trying anything once

User1789 · 25/11/2023 18:30

We once went to a birthday party of a friend at her rich parents' house, who insisted we were only allowed in the garden as they were entertaining in the house (we were in our early 20s). It was pissing it down sideways, on a surprisingly freezing day in May. We lasted a couple of hours to be polite, but by which point we were in pain, and had to leave.

My husband was in a tshirt and had to get into a hot bath for a very long time when we got home.

I'm still cross about it!

Jeannie88 · 25/11/2023 18:35

Hot bath then warm clothes, I find only submerging my whole self in hot water helps when particularly cold. Xx

witchypaws · 25/11/2023 18:37

@HappyMe6 give it a go, drink a hot drink at the same time
I went from bone cold to opening windows with sweat BlushGrin

Thatbloodyhedge · 25/11/2023 18:37

Bloody hell!
Dramatic much?
It's November
Try adulting maybe ?

housethatbuiltme · 25/11/2023 18:50

Have you never been cold to the bone before? It's really not an unusual thing.

Put on a hoody and wrap yourself in a warm blanket duvet avoid cold drinks and ice cream etc... you'll be fine.

While you core is hardly likely to be as cold as someone in cold water shock etc... you should still avoid warming too quick if nothing else to avoid chill blains.

Don't jump in a hot bath or press against a radiator or fire etc... its bad advice.

Thatbloodyhedge · 25/11/2023 18:53

I honestly have never heard such dramatic and sympathetic posts to this
It's fucking November
Wear a coat if you are cold
Ffs
You are not going to die
Grow up

Shefliesonherownwings · 25/11/2023 19:00

Cmon don’t be so pathetic. Have a hot shower, layer up, hot water bottle etc… it’s not hard. Jesus.

MrsMarzetti · 25/11/2023 19:03

It is the U.K in November, why on earth were you shopping without a coat, get in the bath and when you get out get a hot water bottle and socks.

finalspincycle · 25/11/2023 19:03

You will be fine.

When inside

Hot bath
Hot drink
Sit by the fire/ heater/ radiator
Blankets on the sofa
Oodie or dressing gown

When outside

Hand warmers under gloves
Foot warmers under boots with thermal socks over thermal tights.
Woolly hat
Scarf wrapped over your neck and mouth
Lots of layers including a woolly jumper

And not forgetting the all important coat!!!

I hate winter and struggle with the cold at the best of times, but I worry more about slipping on ice or getting stranded in the snow than I do about the temperature.

PortalooSunset · 25/11/2023 19:03

I went out for maybe a couple of hours, I had thermal tights, leggings, skirt, vest, jumper, fleece lined thick coat, furry boots, scarf and hat. Since we got home I've had soup, a mug of tea and sat in bed with my electric blanket on. My nose is still cold after a bowl of dh's finest fucking hot chilli. I feel your pain @187s Grin

1FootInTheRave · 25/11/2023 19:06

Hot bath or shower.

Only thing that warms me once I'm that cold.

And piss off with the 'grow up, it's November' posts. If she's cold, she's cold. It's not limited to December and January you absolute tools.

Honest question not a pisstake - do you have a medical condition?

Because I've never in my life used hand and foot warmers and I haven't worn a scarf or hat since I was forced to as a child and I've lived in the UK all my life including many years in the chilly north east.

I'm not a 'warm person' either. But I can't imagine considering hand and foot warmers to go down the high street for an hour.

I do have Raynaud's, yes.

I think they meant November can be cold too - as in saying "It's November, of course it is going to be cold. What do you expect. Why would you go out without a coat", sort of thing.

That's how I read it anyway.

EmmaEmerald · 25/11/2023 19:24

@canyoudealit some people don't feel the cold, my bestie is like that, my sister is like that, sounds like you are too.

no way would I be okay for 15 mins today without a coat. I do have slightly low blood pressure but not drastic.

I waited that time at the bus stop today and realised my duvet coat, jumper, thin top under jumper, long socks under warm trousers, hat etc weren't enough.

Haven't used hand warmers since a very cold office job but just thinking to order some.

Need a thermal wrap or something I can put under a coat but over whatever I'm wearing so easy to take off indoors, going to look now.

OP I hope you have warmed up and feel fine.

You didn't read my post properly. I do feel the cold. I wasn't talking about going out without a coat. I was talking about someone saying the op should wear foot warmers, hand warmers and scarf wrapped round her face to go to the shops.

I do wish people would actually read the things that people have written before they jump in to correct them. Could you do that next time, please?

EmmaEmerald · 25/11/2023 19:31

@canyoudealit well, aren't you a little ray of sunshine.

"I was talking about someone saying the op should wear foot warmers, hand warmers and scarf wrapped round her face to go to the shops."

to go down the High Street, they said. Seems a reasonable step for people who feel the cold. I could have done with foot warmers in my boots even in the restaurant.

but I can see MN is not the place for gentle chat tonight, perhaps the cold is pissing us all off 😉

I'll go and do something constructive instead.

OneTC · 25/11/2023 19:35

What have I done?

Unlocked your inner wuss

Crucible · 25/11/2023 19:36

Porridge really helps me get warm from the inside, and a warm bath. Warm feet in bed are essential. Also wear a wool hat.

caringcarer · 25/11/2023 19:40

A hot shower, some hot soup and snuggle up under a heated blanket or hot water bottle and under the duvet. Hope you don't go down with a chill before Xmas.

BorrowersAreVermin · 25/11/2023 19:41

Normal for me. If I've been out in the cold sometimes I just can't get warm until I've had a bath or wrapped up in plenty of blankets with the heating on for a while.

maddening · 25/11/2023 19:41

When you are shivering I find the best way to calm it down is to actively relax your muscles, consciously relax them, it definitely helps ime
