All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

Wrappings is a waste of time - you need a hot bath, hot soup/drink ie a source of heat rather than just layers.

PaperSky · 25/11/2023 14:49

You need to either lay in a hot bath, or sit right next to an electric heater, or use an electric blanket or something like that, to heat you up inside.

I get like this sometimes, if I don’t warm up quick enough, I tend to feel really ill so try and do either of things quickly.

hot bath is the best though.

Charlingspont · 25/11/2023 14:49

Hot bath, hot, thick soup (watery drinks don't stay long enough in your stomach to warm you up). Then hot water bottle on your feet.

FlemishHorse · 25/11/2023 14:50

Best source of heat is your own cells. That’s why your body “shivers” your muscles when you’re cold. Go for a run (on the spot if necessary), or do jumping jacks. Do reps till you’re out of breath, wait a minute and repeat.

Hibiscrubbed · 25/11/2023 14:52

Fifteen minutes outside while shopping and you think you’ve got hypothermia? Unlikely.

This does not work (I mean it might work for you but not for me).

Hot shower, and stand in it for as long as you can.

If you've got an electric blanket on your bed, put it on and get into bed for a while. Otherwise, get under a blanket with a hot water bottle or two.

Draculasteachest · 25/11/2023 14:55

I'm West of London and it turned very cold here, yesterday. I bet a lot of the country is the same.
Didn't a study a few years ago show that getting cold and or/wet for a prolonged period can sort of activate respiratory viruses that you may be carrying?
Hope you feel better soon.

Tsukiko · 25/11/2023 14:58

I once hallucinated from the cold in Ambleside during January a few years ago. Several hours beside an open hearth with heating on full later, did next to nothing to aid recovery. It wasn't even raining!

Lesson learned - never visit the Lake district in winter wearing a wax jacket and thin gloves. Only padded synthetics are safe, even 4 layers of sturdy wool won't save you!

StaunchMomma · 25/11/2023 14:59

You've just got bone cold. It takes ages to go off.

I take it you're not a football Mom, OP? This will be me every Saturday afternoon, for months. Even with loads of layers!

Tistheseasontobejollytrala · 25/11/2023 14:59

Ginger is your friend here. Slice up an inch of ginger or just put a decent teaspoonful of ground ginger into a pan with some water and simmer until the water is yellow. Make a foot bath with a washing up bowl or bucket and stick your feet in. Keep topping it up to stay warm for at least 15 minutes.
It will increase your blood circulation and keep you warm for ages.

Feralgremlin · 25/11/2023 15:00

I have felt like this after rugby the last few weeks, nice hot bath is the only cure!

AcrossthePond55 · 25/11/2023 15:02

When I get like this the only thing that works is concentrating on warming up my feet and my head.

Thick socks & a warm hat (I usually warm them up in front of the heater). Then wrap up in a nice thick blanket .

Happyhappyday · 25/11/2023 15:02

Look up mild hypothermia. I used to get this from cold water swimming sometimes, hot shower was actually a really bad idea because it tells your body it’s ok to send blood back to your limbs from your core which can make it worse. Check your temp, if it’s below normal, check out symptoms of hypothermia. Or, you have a fever 🤷‍♀️.

itsmylife7 · 25/11/2023 15:07

put your warm coat on,gloves and boots.
Go for a brisk walk and you'll soon warm up.

ChristmasPuddingFace · 25/11/2023 15:11

Don't you put your nose out of the house before you set out to check how warm or cold it is?

What have you done?

You've gone out in around 0C and got a bit chilled.

Seriously- is it worth asking this on social media?

ChristmasPuddingFace · 25/11/2023 15:12

Yes, someone will def get mild hypothermia, in the UK in slightly cold weather when they are out at the shops for 15 mins.

Honestly.

reelcat · 25/11/2023 15:13

Heat your wrists up with hot water or a water bottle, always helps me if I get too cold!

Bobbotgegrinch · 25/11/2023 15:15

Sounds like you're getting a cold or something and it's just coinciding with going out without a coat so you're linking them together.

IsoIsobaby20 · 25/11/2023 15:16

Warm shower for a long time will do the trick. I spent 2.5 hours watching my son play football this morning and had coat hat and fleece lined boots on. It was -1 at kick off I kept walking around the pitch to warm up.

The minute I got home I got a long shower as nothing else was going to warm me up. You will eventually!

Rocksonabeach · 25/11/2023 15:18

Agree after years of dealing with major problems with the cold and having had frostbite as a child.

even a base layers, longer thin pullover, jumper and poncho, hat and fingerless gloves plus a scarf and fleece wellies - at the yard mucking out at 6 am - frozen

warm bath (not hot warm), change onto new warm clothes, warm cup of tea under a blanket with the dogs and a hot water bottle on front and back

Cyclistmumgrandma · 25/11/2023 15:27

Sounds like very mild hypothermia. I had this when cycling in Scotland in the rain. Nothing warmed me up until I took a warm shower.

Josette77 · 25/11/2023 15:31

I have poor circulation and I have to have a bath to warm up..

honeyandfizz · 25/11/2023 15:33

OP - I don't have a bath

Posters - Have a bath

Read the posts people.

Xmaswomble · 25/11/2023 15:34

If I get cold like this it can take hours for my skin to warm up. Nothing helps
