All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

OP - do some jumping jacks. That's one of the quickest ways to get warm if you are cold.

And
wrap a fleece blanket around you, on top of your clothes - or a big fleece dressing gown

run yoru wrists under a hot tap. the blood flows close to the surface at the wrist so you can warm it up on its way around the body.

Notcontent · 25/11/2023 15:37

It’s very cold today so being outside for 15 min in only a thin jumper would be enough to get really chilled.

I was out today wearing a very warm coat and most people were dressed warmly but I did see some people dressed completely inappropriately and looking very cold! I think some Brits think sunshine = mild weather.

Ohnoooooooo · 25/11/2023 15:37

You need to eat as that generates internal warmth. Sometimes changing body temp too quickly triggers shivering

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 25/11/2023 15:41

Unless you are a heroine in a Victorian novel, you won’t have done any damage to yourself. Heat feet (water bottle, bowl of warm water) and put towel / blanket over your head. Prepare for sudden rush of heat !

grass67 · 25/11/2023 15:43

Take the hairdryer and pop a dressing gown and fresh thick socks on...blast yourself with the lovely hot air. Then get a hot water bottle and retreat under a blanket.

Next time, take a coat you're not a teenager!

littleblackcat27 · 25/11/2023 15:43

I’m loving all the tips on how to get warm - especially the weird ginger one!

The OP has not even said she’s put an extra jumper on when she got back.!?!

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 25/11/2023 15:44

She's already stated there's no bath !!
Something on your feet? Hot water bottle , lots of blankets?, I've just invested in a heated blanket . Half price and it's really good

sonjadog · 25/11/2023 15:44

I live in Scandinavia where it gets really cold and this happens all the time. Have a hot shower or bath. You will probably feel fine afterwards, but you can also turn up the heating, put on an extra jumper and hat and gloves if not. You haven't hurt yourself in any way.

sonjadog · 25/11/2023 15:45

Shower works just as well as bath. So no problem if she doesn't have a bath. Just stand in the shower a bit longer than usual.

geoger · 25/11/2023 15:50

Go for a very brisk walk or jog on the spot or do burpees or do some housework- get moving and the blood circulating and you should be ok.
I’m spring cleaning the house today and I was sweating earlier even with all the windows open and just a t shirt and joggers on

AInightingale · 25/11/2023 15:51

Caught a virus?

The cold hasn't 'made' you shivery, just more susceptible to the bugs that can.

Dweetfidilove · 25/11/2023 15:54

If you have ginger , grate and boil. Drinking that usually set off a mini warmer inside you that tea just doesn’t.

That and a long hot shower should warm you up.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/11/2023 15:55

Hot food with plenty of protein in does the trick for me.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 25/11/2023 14:19

Do you live within the arctic circle?

This made me laugh out loud 😂

DeanElderberry · 25/11/2023 16:16

Have you eaten today? I'm currently fasting for 16 hours twice a week, and often feel very cold on the mornings that breakfast doesn't happen until noon.

AliceMcK · 25/11/2023 16:18

Very normal for me, but im immune compromised and have raynaurds phenomenon, the slightest bit of cold or even getting wet in the rain and I’m burning up and shivering. My routine is get in bed with my electric blanket, fluffy socks, heat packs and big duvet, pre electric blanket I had a big fluffy dressing gown I’d wrap myself in. DH will hold me while I’m shivering if he’s around. My biggest issue is I’ve cracked teeth before so I now chuck a sports mouth guard in when I’m bad. I usually fall asleep and DH gradually turns the blanket off and loosens the blankets so I don’t overheat.

SixPastTheHour · 25/11/2023 16:19

I also think you are coming down with something.

hedgehoglurker · 25/11/2023 16:22

Warm feet and head. I wrap up in a fluffy hooded robe plus a blanket or hat covering head. Or get into bed. I find I need to almost overheat myself before I feel ok again.

Yetanothernewname101 · 25/11/2023 16:24

You've got cold to your core and your clothes will be freezing too with it being so cold out.
If you've not got completely changed yet, I would get a hot shower or bath and then put on fresh warm clothes that you'd popped over the radiator to warm up. Hot water bottle and a blanket to keep you cosy.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 25/11/2023 16:28

I crank the electric blanket to full and crawl into bed it really warms you through.

Daftasabroom · 25/11/2023 16:35

187s · 25/11/2023 14:21

It was -1. I’m not really one for wearing layers so this has really surprised me.

@WrongSwanson no bath but have tried lots of hot drinks and it’s not making a difference

If you're shivering you're fine. Have a hot shower or bath.

CrikeyMajikey · 25/11/2023 16:38

This happens to me when I get too cold. It’s like I’m cold and shivering on the inside. I get into bed with as many layers on as possible until my temperature reaches normal again. I also think it has something to do with Menopause as it only started in recent years.

ILikeDinosaurs · 25/11/2023 16:44

Get in a hot shower.

Donnaloveskebabs · 25/11/2023 16:55

You could try chocolate? It is recommended by St John’s ambulance as a treatment for hypothermia.

UncleHerbie · 25/11/2023 16:56

Hibiscrubbed · 25/11/2023 14:52

Fifteen minutes outside while shopping and you think you’ve got hypothermia? Unlikely.

I don’t know about that 😂 my friends and I went to Atlantic City and walked along the Boardwalk from one venue to another which took five minutes. From the blasts of freezing cold Atlantic air straight from Ireland, in that five minutes my ears, nose and fingers froze and it felt like icicles were forming in them. I was in actual pain while I ‘defrosted’
