All this from not wearing a coat? What have I done to myself?!

Went out without a coat today, rushing to get in the car. Went to a high street so lots of time outside. I was probably outside 15 mins in total, in and out of shops, with a bra and thin jumper on. I felt so cold we had to go back to the car. I have been shivering now for hours. Heating is on, still not warm. Had a warm drink. Is this normal? What have I done?

It is cold out today. I am in London and went out in a vest, long sleeve heat tech top, wool and cashmere hoodie and a down jacket. I am regretting leaving my gloves at home.

In terms of warming up, you need to strip off, have a warm (not hot!) bath or shower, towel yourself dry vigorously, re dress properly - vest, base layer, warm jumper, .socksetc.. and then have a hot drink.

Is this serious? 🙄😳. It's not exactly Scott of the Artic lol 😗

purpletrees16 · 25/11/2023 17:02

Pop layers and gloves on. Try doing a fleeced outer layer with wool inner layer. Popping your dressing gown on as a final layer help. Then lie up against your radiator sitting on the floor (on a pillow) but make sure you’ve got material between you and the radiator. Wear a hat.

This was how I used to come home as a teenager who refused point blank to wear the school coat over her blazer and then walked to school in -2/-3 all Jan /Feb. I would carry the coat… (teenagers are weird.)

Idontgiveashitanymore · 25/11/2023 17:03

I’m with you , I was out and got cold earlier. Now had a hot bath and hot water bottle 👍🏻😀

Matildahoney · 25/11/2023 17:04

Make sure you've changed out of the clothes you were in, they will be cold too which won't help

Out of the sun, it's not got above freezing here (northern Scotland )today and car still frozen. Not quite big winter boots and fleecy lined hat weather yet but getting there!

Bustarold · 25/11/2023 17:29

You've got a chill, you need a hot bath/warm up your core with hot water bottle. It's happened to me several times, I always try to keep core warm now.

weirdoboelady · 25/11/2023 17:32

Another vote here for a hot bath. But it does sound as if your body has gone into minor shock. Some of this will be psychological. So do whatever makes YOU feel better. Hugs are great if you've got anyone around to fulfil this (a friend will do, there's nothing sexual about it!)

True story. I was at a friend's house. She lives in an isolated cottage by a canal. It was the last Saturday before Christmas and we were about to leave to play a concert. The conductor was one of the party.

The doorbell rang and there was someone saying that their friend had just fallen into the canal. I have never seen anyone look so blue. My immediate reaction was to demand that he be thrown into a warm bath, despite my friend and her husband bleating about the concert. I think they were in the bathwater less than 10 minutes before they emerged looking a totally different colour - a healthy pink! I think we found some old clothes to send them on their way, but don't remember the details of that. I am convinced that guy would have died otherwise, and remain a tremendous fan of baths for chilly people.

kitsuneghost · 25/11/2023 17:36

You must bring coming down with something. Unlikely to be 15 min out in the cold.
I had similar once but that was 7hr in hotpants and bra top at sub zero, not 15 min in a thin jumper.

witchypaws · 25/11/2023 17:40

You probably don't have any but
Mustard powder in a foot bath while you drink a hot drink

Moonshine60 · 25/11/2023 17:41

Hot drink, hot water bottle, blanket, sit by the fire or radiator. I know what it's like to be bone chilled.

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/11/2023 17:44

Sometimes a hot bath is what you need, that and my heated throw and a cup of cocoa.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 25/11/2023 17:46

I find the same if I get wet in the morning when walking the dogs - I just dont feel warm all day. Its when your core gets cold I think.

coxesorangepippin · 25/11/2023 17:48

Teaspoon mustard powder in a washing up bowl full of hot water

Put feet in

Bliss

RightOnTheEdge · 25/11/2023 17:50

I used to work outdoors, and now spend hours next to football pitches all winter. I've felt like that lots of times. It's like the cold is in your bones.

I don't know if "no bath" means you haven't got a bath or just haven't had one yet but that's usually what works for me. If not try a hot shower and getting under blankets or your duvet.

Pinkkisugarmouse · 25/11/2023 17:54

When this happens to me I have a nice warm shower, then pjs, bed socks and bed with a cup of tea and both or one cat depending on what else they might be up to.
If this doesn’t work then you probably are coming down with something and the cold set it off.

dontgobaconmyheart · 25/11/2023 17:55

Go and buy a heated throw OP, life changing.

Whack some xmas music or something on and get moving to get your circulation going and to take your mind off it. Or have a nice warm bath.

HappyMe6 · 25/11/2023 18:05

I’ve never heard of putting mustard powder in hot water and soaking your feet what does the mustard do 🤣

Waitingfordoggo · 25/11/2023 18:13

CrikeyMajikey · 25/11/2023 16:38

This happens to me when I get too cold. It’s like I’m cold and shivering on the inside. I get into bed with as many layers on as possible until my temperature reaches normal again. I also think it has something to do with Menopause as it only started in recent years.

This is interesting to me. I’ve always ‘run hot’ as they say so dreaded the hot flushes of the menopause. I am perimenopausal now and no hot flushes yet- the opposite! I now struggle with cold in a way I never have before and get Reynaud’s symptoms as well.

tortoiseshellcats · 25/11/2023 18:14

This happens to me at least once a year! I have a hot shower, change into new clothes and curl up in bed with a hot water bottle for a few hours

HunkMarvin · 25/11/2023 18:16

Have a hot shower/bath and get on with life 😂

nobrasfot · 25/11/2023 18:18

This happens to me a lot even wrapped up, I get so cold my insides get cold and the only way to warm up is a hot bath

Pipistrellus · 25/11/2023 18:19

You only wear a thin jumper with no top in your house in winter? I would already be in bra, top, jumper, jeans and warm socks in the house. Coat and boots to go out anywhere except the washing line. A coat takes a few seconds!

WolfFoxHare · 25/11/2023 18:21

It’s funny everyone is suggesting a bath. The NHS advice for mild hypothermia is to avoid hot baths. I’d have thought a hot bath or shower or a hot water bottle would be the right thing to do.

(Not saying OP has mild hypothermia, just saying that would have been the treatment I’d have suggested to someone really cold.)

Hypothermia

Find out about hypothermia, a dangerous drop in body temperature below 35C (normal body temperature is around 37C). Go to A&E or call 999 immediately if someone has symptoms of hypothermia.

mondaytosunday · 25/11/2023 18:21

It's cold but I'd go out in a top with just a long cardi over to walk the dogs - the walking will heat me up. I think a hot bath or shower for sure in your case. Maybe you were already coming down with something.
