To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

CeruleanSal · 24/11/2023 15:10

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

I'm not sure I'd class making toast as cooking.

But yeah, you're right.

I would 😁

Verified by a sample of one lapsed Catholic.

Unverified by an unlapsed Protestant which just 'proves' the unreliability of statistics!

Someone once gave our church their old coffee machine, the sort with a filter and a glass jug but she wanted it locking in the Vestry in case it was pinched when the Church was open during the day.

avocadotofu · 24/11/2023 18:40

I had no idea people put their toasters in cupboards, you've totally blown my mind OP!

It seems like a lot of work and like you'd constantly be cleaning up crumbs. I guess if you hardly use it maybe it makes sense.

Hollybelle83 · 24/11/2023 18:40

My MIL puts hers in a cupboard. Always found that weird! She also has zero bins in the house?!

sleepyscientist · 24/11/2023 18:44

When we had an open plan house it lived in a pantry cupboard to keep the space clutter free. Our current house has a separate kitchen so it's on the bench for now but when the kitchen is done we will include a pantry cupboard

OldTinHat · 24/11/2023 18:54

YABU. My toaster is in the cupboard. But there again, I only use it, maybe, once a week!

Himawarigirl · 24/11/2023 19:00

Some of my family members (who are also obsessive about tidiness in general) put their toaster away. I honestly think it’s mental but I go along with it without comment when visiting. The most annoying bit is that it lives on a tray and I am yet to figure out whether the tray is meant to stay in the cupboard or come out too during toaster use. Each time I think I have it figured out a comment is made, which makes me doubt myself and do the opposite next time.

ChynaS · 24/11/2023 19:03

You need to think what is wrong with your life that you are concerned about people correctly putting a toaster away after use.

Protestants put the toaster in a cupboard, catholics keep it on the countertop.

Are you a Catholic and sil a protestant who is imposing her protestant traditions on your dB?

Certainly not the case in my protestant toast eating family

Wolvesart · 24/11/2023 19:06

So where do people keep their bread then? Do we not have bread bins? People must have something on their work tops otherwise it looks a bit wrong surely. Like a bare mantelpiece or empty shelves.

Bread in the press here.

TheKnittedCharacter · 24/11/2023 19:12

We keep bread in the fridge or a bread bin in the larder cupboard.

DuesToTheDirt · 24/11/2023 19:13

Who are all these people with enough cupboard space to put their toaster in, and who care enough to move it in and out of the cupboard every day?

honeylulu · 24/11/2023 19:14

This is fascinating. I had no idea anyone put a toaster in the cupboard nor that this was a Catholic thing.

I don't like lots of worktop clutter but the toaster, kettle, microwave, spice rack and utensil pot stay out (I have quite a big kitchen) as it would be a huge faff to put them away and get them out again sometimes multiple times.

When the kitchen was being refitted our builder (Polish if that's relevant) kept trying to persuade me to have him build a cupboard for the microwave. But the only place for it would have been about eye level and I could foresee clumsy me and my clumsy family repeatedly tipping boiling hot foodstuffs onto our faces as we tried to extract them from said cupboard!

In fact I'd forgotten about it until I was watching a Sharon Horgan drama a few months ago (the one with the terminally ill daughter) and I noticed they had an eye level microwave built into a cupboard. It's that a Catholic thing too?

What’s a bread press?

ColleenDonaghy · 24/11/2023 19:16

I think that's a rich person thing @honeylulu .Grin

What’s a bread press?

Lol. A press is a cupboard.

Although we do have a bread shelf in the big press. Blush

Caspianberg · 24/11/2023 19:20

It’s a breakfast pantry that solves all problems. Everything hidden when wanted, no need to move

Similar to this picture (not mine, mine is smaller and messier). Make mess. Fling doors closed, kitchen looks clean

It's a protestant thing, not a Catholic thing. Catholic toasters are on the worktop.

Northsideoftheriver · 24/11/2023 19:26

I used to know someone who put their toaster in a plastic tub and away in a cupboard.

My toaster stays on the worktop.

JoeLovesGina · 24/11/2023 19:27

My kitchen has a toaster, breadbin, kettle, box for napkins, 2 bowls of fruit, kitchen roll, bowl of onions, microwave, pot of wooden spoons, condiments for cooking, food waste bin and tea and coffee making stuff all on the worktop. It looks clean, tidy and very much lived in. Can't bear the sterile, immaculate look.

TheKnittedCharacter · 24/11/2023 19:28

I’m a Catholic (lapsed) and my toaster is allowed out only when in use.

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 24/11/2023 19:29

My MIL has a cover for the toaster which always makes me giggle - feels so Victorian, like it should be covered up!!

Prior to this, I had always had toaster in the category of microwave, it lives on the side always plugged in and ready to go. Never ever seen a toaster put away!

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 24/11/2023 19:30

OMG this is amazing.

lesdeluges · 24/11/2023 19:33

Ireland: Republic of - the toaster is kept on the worktop whatever your religion. It is never put in the press. Up in Northern Ireland, the prods put their toaster in the CUPBOARD, and make lovely traybakes. An ice cream cone in NI is a "poke" (that made me snort my 99 from Teddies I tell ya). Those in the know will know....
